Continued from Volume III, 1.12.2 and see 15.25.4 below. 15.1 Origins Kewley/Kinley appears to be derived from the Gaelic MacFhinonnlogha or Mac Fhionniaoigh, son of fair Lugh or son of fair hero. A possible distinct derivation for Kinley is from the Gaelic Mac Cinfaolaidh, son of Cinfaoladh, wolf head. MacKewley is known in 1511, Kyuley in 1607 and the modern Kewley by 1611. William married Eleanor Waterson (see Volume I, 15.4.7) on the 8th of August, 1818, at Kirk Braddan. He died in Douglas on the 16th of April, 1871, when his age was given as seventy-two years, though at the census a few days earlier his age was given as seventy-three. The church Presentments of the 9th of February, 1798, also refer. No details of his early life are available. By the census of 1841 William was living with his family at Ballacubbon, Braddan, where he appears to have been farming. By 1851 the family is still living in Braddan at Kewaigue, but William is now a tailor. In 1861 the family is living at Kewaigue Inn and William if listed as an innkeeper and Eleanor as a labourer.
