Steps to set up MSMEs 16 9 Institutional Support – whom to contact for what 16 10 Key websites of Govt. of Tamil Nadu 21 FOREWORD MSME-DI, Chennai, Tamil Nadu is one of the field outfit of Office of Development Commissioner, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (DC-MSME) established in the year 1954 for implementing the various policies and programes of Ministry of MSME towards entrepreneurship development in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises across the State in liaison with State Govt. and other stake holders. This Institute covers 32 Districts in the State of Tamil Nadu and UT of Puducherry. with the following mandate For Aspiring entrepreneurs : identify, motivate, train, handhold and provide mentoring services. For Existing entrepreneurs. To provide techno economic consultancy and facilitation service Skill Development : To impart need based skill training through Skill Development Programmes (SDP) One of the vide spectrum of value added services of the Institute is to prepare a brief district industrial profiles of each district for the benefit of aspiring and existing entrepreneurs in the State of Tamil Nadu and other States This report contains brief details of the District, geographical information, statistical data relating to MSME’s of the district, registration under Udyog Aadhaar Memoramdum (UAM), potential areas for investment in service sector and manufacturing sector, identified industrial clusters, key contacts for whom to contact for what etc. The report has been prepared based on our earlier first edition report duly updated from data/inputs collected by District nodal officers and from reports/publications of M/o. MSME, Govt. of India and Govt. of Tamil Nadu, MSME Deptt. Economic Investigation Division of the Institute has taken special efforts in collection and compilation of the relevant data for preparing the document not only for the TRICHIRAPALLI District but for all the Districts of Tamil Nadu. My sincere thanks to all the officers of the Institute for their cooperation in bringing out this brief industrial profile. I am sure that that this document will be of much useful for the benefit of aspiring and existing entrepreneurs who are desirous of setting up of MSMEs in the State of Tamil Nadu in general and in the District of TRICHIRAPALLI in particular. S. PANIKKASSERY Place: CHENNAI DIRECTOR Date:25-6-2016 1 THIRUPALLI DISTRICT MAP 2 BRIEF INDUSTRIAL PROFILE OF TIRUCHIRAPPALLI DISTRICT 2015-16 1. General Characteristics of the District: Tiruchirappalli District is located centrally in Tamil Nadu. Major public sector companies like BHEL, HAPP, OFT and Railway workshop function here. The district is renowned for fabrication industry, Gem Cutting, Korai Mat Weaving and Readymade Garments. The district was formed in 1995 by trifurcating the composite Tiruchirappalli district as Tiruchirappalli, Karur and Perambalur districts with an area of 4403.83 Sq.Kms with Thanjavur District in the East, Karur District in the West, Permabalur District in the North, Pudukkottai and Dindigul Districts in the South as boundaries. The total net sown area in the district is 206578 hectares of land.The district is mainly irrigated by the Kaveri River. Major crops grown in the district are rice, sugarcane, Banana, Coconut, Cotton, Corn and Groundnut . IIM Trichy is the 11th IIM in the country. The institute offers 4 management programmes. These programmes contain a well-designed course curriculum with a global perspective. Tiruchirappalli Junction railway station is a junction station in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. It serves as the headquarters for Tiruchirappalli railway division of the Southern Railway Zone. The total route length of the division is 1026 km with 842(BG) and 184(MG). Five rail lines branch separately from Tiruchy junction 1.1 Location and Geographical Area : The district has an area of 4509 sq.km. It is bound by Perambalur district on the north, Thanjavur district on the east, Pudukkottai and Dindigul districts on the south and Karur district on the west. Being a place located centrally in the State, it has excellent transport link to all other districts in the State. The district lies between 11” 00’ and 12” 00’ degrees of the northern latitude and between 77” 28’ and 78” 50’ degrees of the eastern longitude. 1.2 Topography: The district has a mean temperature with low humidity. The hottest period is from April to June. Temperature of the district varies from 19.7 Degree Centigrade to 39.4 Degree Centigrade. 3 The River Cauvery irrigates about 51,000 Ha. in Trichy, Lalgudi and Musiri Divisions. The normal annual rainfall is 842.60 mm. Multi various crops are grown in this District and Agriculture is the main occupation for most of the people in the District. Alluvial sandy loam and loam soil constitutes major portion of the central regions, which form the Cauvery delta in the district. In Lalgudi, Manachanallur and Andanallur blocks, loamy soil is predominant. Red soil and black soil are predominant in the dry tracks of the district. 1.3 Availability of Minerals: Name of the Mineral Lime Stone Rough Stone FireClay Sand SoapStone Brick Earth Gypsum Colour Granite Quartz Black Granite 1.4 Forests: With an area of 36,246 hectares under forest cover the district accounts for 1.65 percentage of the total forest area of the State. Honey and Cashewnut are the main forest produce besides fuel wood. 1.5 Administrative set up. The district has good network of post, telegraph and telephone facilities. The district has good educational institutional framework. The support organization like DIC, DRDA, Small Industries Service Institute (SISI), Khadi and Village Industries Board (KIVIB) etc. operating in the district provide required inputs to the entrepreneurs in the micro small and medium and also in village industrial sectors. Nearly 23% of the workforce depends on agriculture and about 37.8% of the geographical area (440383 ha) has been brought under cultivation. Industrial Scenario of Tiruchirappalli District The Bharath Heavy Electricals Limited established one of its Manufacturing units in Tiruchirappalli for producing High Pressure Boilers in 1961 and envisaged creation of ancillary units in the Private Sector, in and around Tiruchirappalli to off load items of Low and Medium Technology. As a result in the last three decades a phenomenal growth of Small Scale Industries numbering as on date to 400 units have been set up by entrepreneurs in Thuvakkudi, Ariyamangalam, Thiruverumbur Indl. Estates. The Industrial units are giving gainful and consistent employment to nearly 18,000 people.

    CHAPTER - I INTRODUCTION . The development strategy for any economy has two basic objectives, economic growth and creation of employment opportunities. But there is no direct and linear relationship between economic growth and employment, though it is generally hypothesized that economic growth would give a push to production and employment. There is consensus among the economists and scholars that with growth there will be structural transformation. The central focus of these researches is to examine whether there will be change in the production of commodity from primary to manufacturing activities and a marginal or substantial increase in the share of service sector in GNP. The earlier views about this trend are challenged these days at the national and international level. It is observed that with development there is a rapid transition from agriculture to service sector while industry is lagging behind. This trend is prevalent in the sectoral share of GDP as well as contribution to employment. The service sector is rising more rapidly than industries, whereas the share of agricultural sector has declined in all the countries with the development process, be it in the developed countries like the UK and the 2 USA or less developed countries like India or Pakistan. The reason behind rapid growth of the service sector to what a large part of the service sector consists of infrastructure such as banking, insurance, finance, transport and communication, and social and community services such as medical and educational facilities. All these are requirements for development and cater to the needs of all sectors of the economy, on the one hand, and on the other hand these services improve the quality of life of the people.
