Extent Number of containers: 1 Linear feet: 0.5 Abstract The Charles Goodwin and Adele Serio Frankish Postcard Collection was acquired by donation from a family member in September 2006. The collection consists of 305 items, primarily postcards, but also includes a limited number of cards, announcements, and photographs. The collection documents the personal relationships and acquaintances of Charles and Adele Frankish, both before and after marrying. Also their travels are documented, as well as various places of residence within California, including Ontario. The majority of the postcards are addressed to Adele prior to her marriage to Charles, primarily from family members such as her brothers William (Bill), Anthony, Sylvester (Syl), and Abe. Administrative Information Access Collection is open for research during the operating hours of the Robert E. Ellingwood Model Colony History Room, or by appointment. Acquisitions Information The Charles Goodwin and Adele Serio Frankish Postcard Collection was acquired by donation from a family member in September 2006 by Joshua Fox. Processing Information Kelly Zackmann, completed January 26, 2007 History Charles Goodwin Frankish was the eldest son of Ontario pioneer Charles Frankish. Charles Goodwin was born in Toronto and moved to Ontario with his parents as a small boy. He attended Chaffey College and became one of the first electricians in the area. In the early 1900’s, he moved to San Jose and began courting Miss M. Adele Serio, a music teacher from San Jose. Charles Goodwin then returned to Ontario to work as an electrician, and eventually sent for and married Adele in 1913. Charles Goodwin soon became self-employed as an electrical contractor, but was forced to retire at a fairly young age due to failing health. He died in 1925 at the age of 48. Adele Frankish continued to live in Ontario until the mid-1950’s, when she moved back to Northern California. She died in 1969 in Marin County. The couple did not have any children. Scope and Content Note The collection consists of only one series of 305 postcards, cards, announcements, and photographs. The collection is indexed according to sender, addressee, subject of postcard itself, and date/postmark date. The index is attached to this document.     A SCOTTISH GOLF PIONEER DEVELOPS THE WEST IN AMERICA GOLF COURSE ARCHITECT WILLIAM WATSON 1860-1941 By Dean Knuth William Watson Circa 1920 at age 60 William Watson was an early pioneer in golf course architecture who immigrated from Fife, Scotland to America in 1898. In a successful career he had designed more than 100 golf courses by his retirement in 1929 when the Great Depression began. Many golfers know of Donald Ross and Alister Mackenzie but haven’t heard of Watson, yet many of his courses have survived close to a century or more. Minikahda Club in Minnesota was his first U.S. design and also his first job as head golf professional. He was prolific and a success in California. A number of his other best-known designs have hosted major USGA and PGA National Championships, including Harding Park, San Diego Country Club, the original Brentwood Country Club, Diablo Country Club, Berkeley Country Club and Orinda Country Club. He designed the original The Olympic Club Lake and Ocean courses plus many others which unfortunately did not survive housing developments on land that became more valuable as America grew. He was guided by the primary goal of maintaining naturalness in his designs. Watson wrote:, “A good rule is to stress the importance of fitting in all grading work to harmonize with the surrounding territory, mounds, slopes, grassy hollows, sand pits, all have their values in beautifying the setting of our greens and in giving them distinctive definition — if artificially arranged without appearance of artificiality.” He also believed that a course is more interesting if every green has a character all its own, giving the player something besides the flag to view in approaching the hole.

(PROPOSITION 65) Dear Alleged Violator and the Appropriate Public Enforcement Agencies: Aqua Terra Aeris (“ATA”) Law Group represents the Center for Advanced Public Awareness, Inc. (“CAPA”), 180 Promenade Circle, Suite 300, Sacramento, CA 95834. CAPA is a California non-profit corporation dedicated to, among other causes, helping safeguard the public from health hazards by bringing about a reduction in the use and misuse of hazardous and toxic chemicals, fostering and increasing the public awareness of chemicals used to manufacture consumer products, facilitating a safe environment for consumers and employees, and encouraging corporate responsibility. CAPA has identified violations of California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (“Proposition 65”), which is codified at California Health & Safety Code, section 25249.5 et seq., with respect to the product identified below. These violations have occurred and continue to occur because the alleged Violator identified below failed to provide required clear and reasonable warnings with these products. Section 25249.6 of the statute provides that “[n]o person in the course of doing business shall knowingly and intentionally expose any individual to a chemical known to the State to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity without first providing a clear and reasonable warning to such individual.” Without proper warnings regarding the toxic effects of exposures to this listed chemical that results from contact with this product, California citizens lack the information necessary to make an informed decision on whether and/or how to eliminate (or reduce) their risk of exposure to the listed chemical from the reasonably foreseeable use of the product.

    A SCOTTISH GOLF PIONEER DEVELOPS THE AMERICAN WEST GOLF COURSE ARCHITECT WILLIAM WATSON 1860-1941 By Dean Knuth William Watson Circa 1899 at age 39 Circa 1925 at age 65 (Compliments of Joseph Gladke collection) William Watson was an important pioneer of early golf course architecture who is all but forgotten. You know the names of Donald Ross, Alister Mackenzie and A.W. Tillinghast. You may not know William Watson, a man whom history has passed over, but you should. William Watson had a successful career and designed more than 100 golf courses before his retirement in 1930, when the Great Depression began, at the age of 70. Many of his courses have survived for a century, including his first U.S. design, the Minikahda Club in Minnesota. That is where he also landed his first job as head professional. Watson immigrated from Fife, Scotland, near St. Andrews to America in 1898. He was a prolific designer and a success in California. A number of his other best-known designs have hosted major USGA and PGA National Championships, including Harding Park, San Diego Country Club, the original Brentwood Country Club, Diablo Country Club, Berkeley Country Club and Orinda Country Club. He designed the original The Olympic Club Lake and Ocean courses plus many others which unfortunately did not survive housing developments on land that became more valuable as America grew. He was guided by the primary principle of maintaining naturalness in his designs. Watson wrote: “A good rule is to stress the importance of fitting in all grading work to harmonize with the surrounding territory, mounds, slopes, grassy hollows, sand pits, all have their values in beautifying the setting of our greens and in giving them distinctive definition — if artificially arranged without appearance of artificiality.” He also believed that a course is more interesting if 1 every green has a character all its own, giving the player something besides the flag to view in approaching the hole.
