However, many medicinal plants are difficult to identify when they are sold as roots, powders or bark. DNA barcoding involves using a short, agreed-upon region of a genome as a unique identifier for species– ideally, as a global standard. Research Question: What is the functionality, efficacy and accuracy of the use of barcoding for identifying root material, using medicinal plant roots sold by herbalists in Marrakech, Morocco, as a test dataset. Methodology: In total, 111 root samples were sequenced for four proposed barcode regions rpoC1, psbA-trnH, matK and ITS. Sequences were searched against a tailored reference database of Moroccan medicinal plants and their closest relatives using BLAST and Blastclust, and through inference of RAxML phylograms of the aligned market and reference samples. Principal Findings: Sequencing success was high for rpoC1, psbA-trnH, and ITS, but low for matK. Searches using rpoC1 alone resulted in a number of ambiguous identifications, indicating insufficient DNA variation for accurate species-level identification. Combining rpoC1, psbA-trnH and ITS allowed the majority of the market samples to be identified to genus level. -

La Segunda Reunión De Botánica Peninsular
La Segunda Reunión de Botánica Peninsular por E. FERNANDEZ-GALIANO Desde que en julio de 1948 se celebró en Portugal la prime- ra Reunión de Botánica Peninsular, fue preocupación constante de los botánicos españoles el corresponder a las amabilidades de nuestros colegas portugueses, y dar así cumplimiento a uno de los acuerdos adoptados en dicha primera Reunión, el de repetirse periódicamente los contactos entre los botánicos de ambos países. Después de vencer múltiples dificultades, pudo realizarse nuestra reunión en Aragón, de los días 16 al 30 de junio de 1955, aprovechando también la estancia de nuestros colegas portugue- ses para rendir un homenaje a los numerosos botánicos oriundos de la región aragonesa que tanto contribuyeron al progreso de la ciencia botánica española. Con notable retraso, motivado por el tiempo empleado en la preparación de los diversos trabajos que lo componen, se publi- ca hoy el presente resumen de dicha excursión, y creemos opor- tuno reseñar aquí la crónica de la excursión transcribiendo los diferentes discursos que en las diversas conmemoraciones se pronunciaron. Salieron los participantes de Madrid a las tres de la tarde del jueves 16 de junio, camino de Calatayud, en donde aquella mis- ma tarde se celebró una sesión de homenaje a los botánicos don Benito Vicioso, natural de dicha ciudad, Lázaro Ibiza y Calavia (naturales de Aranda del Moncayo). Intervinieron como oradores el doctor José Galindo, en representación de Estudios Bilbilita- iios, don Carlos Vicioso (hijo del primer botánico homenajeado, IV ANALES DEL I. BOTÁNICO A. J. CAVANILLES y participante en nuestra excursión), y don Cayetano Cortés La- torre, que recordó en su discurso a don Blas Lázaro Ibiza, y cuya disertación figura publicada aparte en este mismo tomo de los ANALES. -

La NOTICIA HISTÓRICA que del botánico ilustre escribió su sobrino Cavanilles y Centi, abuelo del actual Conde de Cerrageria, estaba inédita; la NOTICIA DE LA VIDA LITERARIA del sapientísimo sacerdote valenciano, escrita por el discípulo predilecto, en cuyos brazos murió Cavanilles, se publicó hace más de cien años en dos Revistas, que dejaron también de imprimirse, ya en remota fecha. Publicar ambos estudios bio-bibliográficos era labor patriótica que anhelaba realizar el Conde de Cerrageria. Sumó a los datos por mí reunidos, documentos y obras de su biblioteca particular, acrecentada incesantemente, y me rogó que anotase el discurso de su ilustre abuelo y escribiera las bio-bibliografías de éste y del gran botánico aragonés M. -
Understory Plant Species Diversity of Asalem's Forests, Northern Iran

Habib Yazdanshenas,1 Mehdi Kalagar,2 Mehdi Thus, present research was carried out to find the chorology, origin and diversity of 3 the understory plants species in Asalem’s forests, northern Iran. This diversity is particularly evident in Scandiceae subtribe Daucinae, a group encompassing species with wings or spines developing on fruit secondary ribs. In this paper, we explore fruit evolution in 86 representatives of Scandiceae and outgroups to assess adaptive shifts related to the evolutionary switch between anemochory and epizoochory and to identify possible dispersal syndromes, i.e., patterns of covariation of morphological and life-history traits that are associated with a particular vector. We also assess the phylogenetic signal in fruit traits. Principal component analysis of 16 quantitative fruit characters and of plant height did not clearly separate spe- cies having diferent dispersal strategies as estimated based on fruit appendages. Only presumed anemochory was weakly associated with plant height and the fattening of mericarps with their accompanying anatomical changes. We conclude that in Scandiceae, there are no distinct dispersal syndromes, but a continuum of fruit morphologies relying on diferent dispersal vectors. Phylogenetic mapping of ten discrete fruit characters on trees inferred by nrDNA ITS and cpDNA sequence data revealed that all are homoplastic and of limited use for the delimitation of genera. -

Poulter (1956) united Graellsia with the later-published Physalidium Fenzl in Tchihatcheff (1860: 327) and recognized six species in the genus. -

Enlem ve boylam dereceleri göz önüne alınarak yapılmış olan Davis’in Grid kareleme sistemine göre, araştırma alanı C7 karesindedir. Yüksekliği yaklaşık 1360-2550 m arasında olan Akdağ, Adıyaman’ın Çelikhan ilçesi sınırları içerisinde yer almaktadır. Bu çalışmamda 2016-2018 yılları arasında 1.535 bitki örneği toplanmıştır. Araştırma bölgesin de 73 familya, 297 cins ve 677 takson (655 tür) tespit edilmiştir. Toplam taksonlardan 2 tanesi Pteridophyta bölümüne aitken, geriye kalan 675 takson ise Spermatophyta bölümüne aittir. Gymnospermeae alt bölümü 12, Angiospermeae alt bölümü ise 663 taksona sahiptir. Sırasıyla Angiospermae alt bölümüne ait olan taksonların 589’si Dicotyledonea, 74’i Monocotyledonea sınıfında yer almaktadır. -
