For ballet fans in Fredericton the magic of the holiday season will begin at The Playhouse on Saturday evening, November 22nd, when Ballet Jörgen performs Tchaikovsky's Christmas classic, "The Nutcracker."

Loved by children and adults alike for more than a century, the ballet tells the story of a little girl named Klara who dreams that the nutcracker she received for Christmas is a handsome prince. Dolls and toys come to life and even the household mice play a role in Klara's fantasy. The handsome prince takes her to his kingdom where she is greeted by the Sugarplum Fairy and entertained with games and dances from different countries. The performance is filled with colourful sets, beautiful costuming and familiar melodies as well as classical and innovative dance.

The evening promises to be especially exciting for three young local dancers. The touring company is small -- just 16 dancers -- so three students from Dance Fredericton have been invited to take part. They are sisters Jocelyn Leger, 11, and Danielle Leger, 9, who will appear as mice and Claire Gallant, 14, as a reindeer.

Ballet Jörgen is one of Canada's most innovative and prolific dance companies with a unique repertoire of ballets and a performance schedule spanning the continent. The company was founded in 1987 by dancers Bengt Jörgen and Susan Bodie in an effort to expand and improve opportunities for ballet choreographers.

As the only Canadian ballet company with a repertoire consisting exclusively of original works, Ballet Jörgen Canada is also recognized as a centre of excellence in the development of ballet choreography.

"The Nutcracker" is being presented by Council of the Arts Fredericton as part of its ONSTAGE series. Tickets are available at The Playhouse box office; call 458-8344 for information.

8. Jeunesse Musicales of Fredericton Presents Ian Parker, Piano

November 25th, 2003 at 7:30 pm. Centre communautaire Sainte-Anne Cost: adults: 15$, students 10$, JMC members are free

Jeunesses Musicales of FREDERICTON are proud to present a piano recital by IAN PARKER as part of the Desjardins Concerts 2003-2004. This tour will bring the young pianist in 27 cities throughout Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes Provinces. He will perform pieces by Ravel, Louie, Mozart, Chopin and Brahms.

With his fluid artistry and irresistible charm, Ian Parker captivates audiences wherever he goes. In addition to solo appearances with numerous Canadian orchestras, he has played recitals across North America, Western Europe and Israel. Recently, Mr. Parker won First Prize at the 2001 CBC/Radio-Canada National Competition for Young Performers, as well as Grand Prize at the Canadian National Music Festival, Corpus Christie International Competition and the OSM Competition. At the Juilliard School of Music (New York), he received the 2002 William Petschek Piano Debut Award and, on two occasions, was the winner of the Gina Bachauer Scholarship Piano Competition. Heard regularly on CBC Radio Two, Mr. Parker has also performed live on WQXR in New York. Recent and upcoming highlights include performances with the Toronto Symphony, Symphony, Edmonton Symphony, Winnipeg Symphony and the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal, as well as recital tours with Debut Atlantic and Jeunesses Musicales of Canada. He will make his Lincoln Center recital debut at the Walter Reade Theater in 2004. Born in Vancouver in 1978 to a family of pianists, Ian Parker began his piano studies at age three with his father Edward J. Parker. He holds both the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Juilliard School of Music, where he was a student of Yoheved Kaplinsky. While at Juilliard, The Canada Council for the Arts awarded him the Sylva Gelber Career Grant, which is given annually to a talented Canadian artist.

The Jeunesses Musicales of Canada movement has, since 1949, dedicated its work to youth and to musical excellence. Its mission is to promote the development of the arts in Canada by bringing fine music to audiences of all ages, and by fostering the careers of outstanding young Canadian instrumentalists, singers and composers in Canada and abroad. Thanks to the dedication of hundreds of volunteers and to the support of their financial partners, Jeunesses Musicales of Canada now constitutes Canada's primary network for the spreading of classical music. In 2000, the organization opened the JMC House in Montreal that includes a 100-seat chamber music hall.

As part of its mission, Jeunesses Musicales of Canada produces around 700 concerts each year for an audience of 110,000 people, as part of the Youth Concerts series designed for children ages 3 to 12, the La musique, c’est de famille! series at the JMC House, the Sons et Brioches series (Place des Arts in Montreal) and the Music with bite series (Harbourfront Centre in Toronto) tailored for family audiences, and the Desjardins Concerts series for the general public. Since May 2002, the Jeunesses Musicales Montreal International Competition is presented annually, successively featuring piano (from May 24 to June 4, 2004), voice (2005) and violin (2006).

This tour is made possible thanks to the financial support of the Mouvement des caisses Desjardins, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, The Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts de Montréal and The Toronto Arts Council.
