"Red Earth Rising" is a body of work that challenges the preconceived ideas of what aboriginal art, craft and designs are. Fran Ward Francis wishes to honour the traditions of her culture and at the same time move creatively forward by incorporating natural mediums into her paintings. The artist portrays the continual evolution of aboriginal art and responds to contemporary issues that affect the lives of aboriginal people. Nutcracker Brings Holiday Magic For ballet fans in Fredericton the magic of the holiday season will begin at The Playhouse on Saturday evening, November 22nd, when Ballet Jörgen performs Tchaikovsky's Christmas classic, "The Nutcracker." Loved by children and adults alike for more than a century, the ballet tells the story of a little girl named Klara who dreams that the nutcracker she received for Christmas is a handsome prince. Dolls and toys come to life and even the household mice play a role in Klara's fantasy. The handsome prince takes her to his kingdom where she is greeted by the Sugarplum Fairy and entertained with games and dances from different countries. The performance is filled with colourful sets, beautiful costuming and familiar melodies as well as classical and innovative dance. The evening promises to be especially exciting for three young local dancers. The touring company is small -- just 16 dancers -- so three students from Dance Fredericton have been invited to take part. They are sisters Jocelyn Leger, 11, and Danielle Leger, 9, who will appear as mice and Claire Gallant, 14, as a reindeer. Ballet Jörgen is one of Canada's most innovative and prolific dance companies with a unique repertoire of ballets and a performance schedule spanning the continent. The company was founded in 1987 by dancers Bengt Jörgen and Susan Bodie in an effort to expand and improve opportunities for ballet choreographers. As the only Canadian ballet company with a repertoire consisting exclusively of original works, Ballet Jörgen Canada is also recognized as a centre of excellence in the development of ballet choreography. "The Nutcracker" is being presented by Council of the Arts Fredericton as part of its ONSTAGE series. Tickets are available at The Playhouse box office; call 458-8344 for information. 8. Born in Vancouver in 1978 to a family of pianists, Ian Parker began his piano studies at age three with his father Edward J. Parker. He holds both the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Juilliard School of Music, where he was a student of Yoheved Kaplinsky. While at Juilliard, The Canada Council for the Arts awarded him the Sylva Gelber Career Grant, which is given annually to a talented Canadian artist. Music lover Often, Debbie says, “I have to emcee a show, or take tickets or serve food. We have to do whatever we have to do.” Sometimes, at a late-night, post-show jam, she will add her own guitar to the melee of instruments. “I’ve played guitar for years, as a church youth leader, around campfires and with youth groups. I play guitar in a rock band at church. It’s great for mental health. Some people cook, some people garden—I like music,” she says. When the PEI Mutual Festival of Small Halls begins, “I’m just a cog in the wheel,” Debbie insists, but she laughs, “I’ve been a constant cog—I’m the only original cog left. “Every year for the festival, we have to hire new staff, and they are often 20- somethings with not a lot of knowledge of traditional music, Debbie says.
