2019 CANADIAN SONG CONFERENCE Canadian Song Conference 2019 – Message from FACTOR President, Duncan McKie

FACTOR, with the support of the Government of Canada and Canada’s Private Broadcasters, has been supporting artists, , and the overall Canadian music industry for over 30 years. In 2018-2019, with our largest budget ever, approximately $20 million in grants was dispersed across Canada for over 5,000 separate projects.

FACTOR has been proud to support songwriters at various stages of their careers, but especially in the beginning as they are starting to hone their craft. It’s important for young songwriters to have access to funding in order to help propel themselves to a point where they’ve developed a sustainable career.

With the changes in the music industry business model we’ve seen in the last 20 years, songwriting as a revenue stream has become a more important component of music career building. Recognizing this, in the summer 2019, FACTOR will be launching two new programs, Songwriter Development and Songwriter Support for Music Publishers (coordinated with the Canadian Music Publishers Association). These programs combined will contribute $250,000 nationally to individuals or companies to promote songwriter activities both in Canada and abroad.

We congratulate Music PEI for organizing the Canadian Song Conference and we are very pleased to support it. It’s obviously more than critical that artists who are self-managed and those who work with larger teams understand the multiple revenue streams that exist for musicians. Whether through streaming, syncs or other royalty streams, managing your output and maximizing your returns will be critical for anyone hoping to create a sustainable music career.

Have a great conference.

Growing up in Stratford, PEI, music was always a driving force for Logan. After picking up the guitar at the age of 10, he quickly became known throughout the local blues scene as a force to be reckoned with. At age 12, Logan formed the blues group Ripped Paper with some friends, and the band played venues all over Prince Edward Island such as The Guild, The Confederation Centre of the Arts, and Cloggeroo Folk Festival. Since then, Logan has been a part of other groups such as LOGAN The Elusive Kings, and Generator. Logan has now decided to go solo. Drawing from his past in blues bands, and experimental rock bands, he is taking these sounds and using them in developing his RICHARD own sound. Prince Edward Island www.loganrichard1.bandcamp.com

Mike Harmel is the lead singer of Regina’s, Government Town, who describe themselves as Celtic- tinged, country-flavoured, alt rock, folk, pop and Canadiana. They’re OK with that. With deeply personal stories, his songs ring with hope and love and truth. There’s a certain welcome gravitas in Government Town, that comes with a songwriter who’s a little older, a little wiser, turning kind attention to those shared experiences that shape us all – losing a loved one, finding a passion, MIKE trying to live a full life. The imagery of Mike’s songs remain after the last chord of the gorgeous HARMEL arrangements has faded. 2019 CANADIAN SONG CONFERENCE MUSIC PEI LISTENING SESSION PARTICIPANTS ALICIA TONER www.aliciatoner.ca A child of the East Coast, Alicia Toner writes songs that tell the truth. Her americana blend of rolk, pop and country-rock offers a unique melody driven sound built around her eloquently emotive voice.

ASHLEY CONDON www.ashleycondon.com Ashley Condon is the grandchild of Bill Leblanc, a Canadian country pioneer who once spent the night in jail with Hank Snow. Like pecan pie – sweet and nutty – Ashley has won audiences over with her larger-than-life stage presence and down-to-earth charm. Growing up on everything from old-time country to folk, blues and soul, her music resonates.

ATLANTIC STRING MACHINE www.atlanticstringmachine.com The Atlantic String Machine is made up of five musicians with considerable professional experience in a number of musical genres, having performed worldwide with internationally recognized symphony and chamber orchestras, ensembles, bands and individual artists. They have joined together to present a wide range of music from classical to jazz, pop, world music and their own compositions. DOC LANDRY www.doclandrymusic.com Tony “Doc” Landry is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who first discovered his voice and a passion for songwriting in his late-thirties. As a songwriter, Landry meanders through musical styles like a river without a passport. He borrows from any musical style or era – weaving together elements of pop, folk, dance, country and soft rock into a seamless sound that is mature and personal

LAWRENCE MAXWELL www.lawrencemaxwell.com With classic country influences of Merle Haggard and George Jones, Maxwell cherishes and revives the “old soul” of country music. That being said his songs cover a lyrical landscape of heartfelt storytelling and whimsical philosophy. In short, Lawrence Maxwell will tell it to you like it’s folk and sing it to you like it’s country

LITTLE CITIES www.littlecitiesband.bandcamp.com Little Cities are 5 energetic goofballs who collectively write music that charges the flux capacitor and takes you back to the 2000’s. With the gun still smoking from releasing their debut EP, they’ve set their sights on bringing their shiny, steadfast, soaked-in-synth pop-punk collective nationwide. LONELY KID www.lonelykid.bandcamp.com Electronic musician/producer Mark Skinner may be known by his musical moniker “Lonely Kid,” but lately he’s been making a lot of friends. He was recently picked up by an American label, and was nominated for two 2017 Music PEI and one ECMA award.

MEAGHAN BLANCHARD www.meaghanblanchard.com Meaghan Blanchard is a two time ECMA award winning songwriter, a gifted guitarist, with her own blend of claw hammer/finger picking style, and she pairs that with a crystal pure voice and a unique ability to write and tell stories through charming character driven songs.

NIKKIE GALLANT www.nikkie.ca To date, Nikkie Gallant has released two full-length albums and has been nominated for several Music PEI Awards, including Songwriter of the Year. Nikkie’s music is about communion and shared experiences. She likes to make people feel things and crafts her songs with a focus on touching people deeply.

SCOTT MACKAY www.scottmackay.ca “When snow falls in hell you’ll come around you’ll put the bottle down.” With one line you are introduced to the simple, elegant music of singer & songwriter, Scott MacKay. Although Scott has the ability to write captivating music in all genres, it’s MacKay’s country-ish songs that standout; riddled with one-liners that sparkle like rhinestones on a Nudie suit.

SORREY www.sorrey.bandcamp.com Sorrey’s music delivers an unapologetic reminder of how the heart pulses strongly during our fading romances. Vocalist/Rhythm Guitarist, Emilee Sorrey’s direct-to-the-heart lyricism never loses its conviction. The band layers analog synthesizers, nylon-string guitars and vintage drum machines, all borrowed from sentimental 80s records, to cultivate a sound that is uniquely stylish and contemporary. THE EAST POINTERS www.eastpointers.ca There’s a reason, beyond their dazzling musicianship and wildly entertaining live shows, that The East Pointers have connected with audiences right across the globe, making new, original roots music the hippest, most vibrant thing going. You’ll soon experience that for yourself.
