Welcome delegates and participants to the 5th annual Canadian Song Conference. Music PEI is honoured to have you join us for this unique conference. The focus of the CSC has been to assist artists in exploring the development of multiple revenue streams in the music industry to create sustainable careers. 2019 will mark a slight twist to our annual event as we have partnered with the East Coast Music Association to collaborate and combine the two events. We are excited for this opportunity. “It is always especially rewarding when organizations can work collaboratively. This year, the ECMA is thrilled to partner with Music PEI to bring the 2019 Canadian Song Conference to Charlottetown during the same time period as the 31st ECMAs, May 1-5, 2019. Collectively, both events will enjoy a bigger overall impact and generate more advancement opportunities for East Coast Artists.” Andy McLean, ECMA CEO You will have an opportunity to discover new music during our Listening Sessions, meet one on one with members of our music industry, network with fellow delegates and be the first to hear new music created during the 2019 Music PEI Canadian Songwriter Challenge. Through our partnership with ECMA our delegates will be able to participate in the exciting ECMA Conference and Export Buyers Program. Music PEI is grateful to our funders for their ongoing investment including the Government of Prince Edward Island through Innovation PEI and Skills PEI, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and FACTOR (through the financial support of the Government of Canada and Canada’s private radio broadcasters). We also wish to thank Bell Media for their tremendous support of the Canadian Songwriter Challenge. These organisations have allowed Music PEI to develop a slate of ongoing activities, programs and events. Showcase PEI, held in the autumn each year, has been hailed as the “best little music conference” by many of the previous delegates and presents the best live performance artists of PEI. The Music PEI Investment Program provides PEI artists and industry professionals with financial support for their projects and unique programs like the Golden Ticket helps artists launch singles to radio. We know you will have an opportunity to explore the friendly sights, sounds and food of this great city, known as the birthplace of Canada’s Confederation, while you are here. The music culture runs deep on our Island, producing numerous internationally and domestically touring artists in multiple genres. Walking the streets of Charlottetown in the summer, you can find music around every corner. From dozens of ceilidhs to weekly jazz sessions, festivals and concerts, PEI comes alive with our sound of music! We hope you enjoy your time in Charlottetown and come away with many new discoveries, business opportunities and new friends! Rob Oakie | Executive Director, Music PEI 2019 CANADIAN SONG CONFERENCE Canadian Song Conference 2019 – Message from FACTOR President, Duncan McKie FACTOR, with the support of the Government of Canada and Canada’s Private Broadcasters, has been supporting artists, songwriters, and the overall Canadian music industry for over 30 years. In 2018-2019, with our largest budget ever, approximately $20 million in grants was dispersed across Canada for over 5,000 separate projects. FACTOR has been proud to support songwriters at various stages of their careers, but especially in the beginning as they are starting to hone their craft. It’s important for young songwriters to have access to funding in order to help propel themselves to a point where they’ve developed a sustainable career. With the changes in the music industry business model we’ve seen in the last 20 years, songwriting as a revenue stream has become a more important component of music career building. Recognizing this, in the summer 2019, FACTOR will be launching two new programs, Songwriter Development and Songwriter Support for Music Publishers (coordinated with the Canadian Music Publishers Association). These programs combined will contribute $250,000 nationally to individuals or companies to promote songwriter activities both in Canada and abroad. We congratulate Music PEI for organizing the Canadian Song Conference and we are very pleased to support it. It’s obviously more than critical that artists who are self-managed and those who work with larger teams understand the multiple revenue streams that exist for musicians. Whether through streaming, syncs or other royalty streams, managing your output and maximizing your returns will be critical for anyone hoping to create a sustainable music career.
