The idea of the pervasive quality of quotes is incontestable. Very often the thoughts of today are most aptly expressed by the writers of yesterday. These wise men were able to capture concisely and po­ etically a simple. though timeless and uni­ versal idea. thus placing the adages and proverbs we use so frequently. high above the mundane cliche. The power of a popular quote is not a trivial matter at all. From "all men are created equal" to "think not what your country can do for you. but what you can do for your country:' society on all levels has re­ peated and believed these sayings. and has risen up at "54/40 or fight" and "Remember the Alamo" to forge the history of the world. "The world will little note nor long remember what we say here:' and we don't propose that the 1967 edition of the Gargoyle will have historical value. Problems like truancy and vandalism plague it constantly, Grade advisers and the program committee are burdened with problems of "personality con­ flicts" and "equalization," while the "test com­ mittee" consisting of Mr. Shapin, Mr, Gray, and Mr. Crystal struggles 10 review and to re­ turn to the students, the results of such major exams as the Regents Scholarship Tes!. The National Merits and the Scholastic Aptitude Tests, Although situated in an obscure part of the building, the College Room is one of the most oft frequented and oft feared rooms around. The deans must deal with students directly on matters such as cutting classes, long hair and dress. Social Studies in Flushing High School is a course of perpetual adventure, revolution and change. One can see man develop as his mind grasps new concepts and he learns to stand up to nature's blows. As a sophomore. a student starts with the age of gigantic pyramids and palaces. and then sees Europe settle into darkness after the fall of the mighty Roman Empire. The later rebirth and growth of Europe and the invention of machines which could turn the work of twenty men into the work of one. revolutionizing the economy of the entire world. ends the year's work. Besides such demonstrative forms of absorbing culture, the language program includes dialogue and audio-visual techniques, and students are taught about the customs and history of the ·, foreign countries where each language is spoken, In Latin. this is an unusual aspect since the people who originally spoke this language have nOt been seen for about 1200 years. The French atmosphere is created by contact with the litera­ ture of Moli~re and de Maupassant, and the Ger­ man program offers exposure to such greats as Goethe and Heine. Those who take Russian do much more than sing "Volga Boatman" or listen to the strains of "Midnight in Moscow." To supplement the vocal aspects of the course, the students are familiarized with Pushkin's and Turgenev's works. Although in many schools foreign language means "conjugate" and "decline," in Flushing High School. it also means "see. sing, appreciate and learn."

Biological Sciences

Pursuing a rigorous program to give the students a better understanding of this com­ plicated world. Me. Weinberger and his biolo­ gy teachers have taught this science on many levels to all students in the school General Science and Biology are taught to all students. while Microbiology and Physiology are of­ fered to those qualified and eager to taste the rewards of specialized science courses. The Biology syllabus has changed so ra­ pidly in recent years that it IS almost incom· prehensible to the average parent. and even the average bird and bee are looking on in amazement. For all stout-hearted Flushingites the Physical Sciences Department offers many interesting and challenging courses. Any student interested in finding out what the gargoyles are made of could do so by taking Earth Science. Of all the courses In the PhYSical Sciences Department. this is the most popular. It covers everything from rocks and minerals to weather and astronomy and what happened to the boy who foolishly took his girlfriend for granite. If you should ask what causes the horrible odor that pervades (from time to time) the area around 369. the answer will probably be that it is just some student's chemistry experiment. How­ ever. this is not true; the culprits are the chemistry teachers themselves. They use this device to keep inquisitive students out of the chemistry lab while they are busy changing lead into gold. However. when pressed they deny all knowledge of the pro­ cess. Instead. students are forced to stick to the usual high school chemistry syllabus. An object of art is created when a person is moved to express in painting or sculpture. some experience or reaction he has had. The basic skills of painting, lettering and desIgn­ Ing with different types of materials are taught to our students. They also learn the commercial aspects of art which are those seen in magazines and newspapers. A course in art implies not only learning what to do but what to appreciate. Included in our own classes at Flushing IS the study of international art trends from the Renaissance to the much discussed "pop" and "op." Art has never been free of controversy and Kipling's re­ mark, "It's clever, but is it art)" could be used easily today in the battle to deny artistic stand­ ing to the avant-garde set. Along with the required 7 terms of gym goes the necessity of attending a course in Hygiene. Here all students take an accredited course in first aid and driver education. The following was found in the Red Cross section of one student's notebook under the heading -Common Ailments. "Cause-Spring physical fitness testing and a prolonged contact with parallel bars. horses and ropes. Sympwms-l. Heart-rending groans and a noticeable pallor after attendance is taken and new exercises suggested. 2. Pain in the area of the part of the body below the head. 3. Marked decrease in density of the class as the term progresses. Suggested rreatment-1. Stop all physi­ cal exertion immediately. (If the arms had ever been meant to touch the toes. they would have been made longer.) 2. Administer kindness and sympathy in large doses and advise an extended bed rest. 3. Over the years. Flushing High School has col­ lected quite a good library. and it is growing all the time. Two Library Clubs were formed and the room made more attractive with prints on the wall. This year two new microfilm machines were added and files of the New York Times and various magazines were begun. as the librarians fought against those who state: "The newspapers! GO. activities included a rousingly successful production of "Oliver."
