The work reported herein would not have been possible without the help of the care takers, curators, veterinarians and directors of the zoos contributing data, hosting the project and providing vital information. Wild adult males: Zoo adult males: - Aggressive interaction, - Little risk taking behaviors physical aggression - Boarder patrols, lethal intergroup encounters Physiological challenges: Primary causes of mortality - No clear sex differences are infection diseases. Females: - Higher cortisol Neither differences in external - Lower klotho factors nor in internal factors - Higher IGFBP-3 alone explains the sex - Lower testosterone differences in life expectancy. Conclusion Where are all the old male bonobos gone? Wild adult males: Zoo adult males: - Less aggressive - Most of the behaviours are interaction, rarely physical absent or rare aggression - No boarder patrols or lethal intergroup encounters Male bonobos are less good prepared for physiological Physiological challenges: challenges, but some of them - Females are better face more challenges than prepared females do. - Lower cortisol - Lower klotho Maybe males are more - Higher IGFBP-3 vulnerable to stress and - Lower testosterone diseases. • Robert Schumann a Youth Pilgrimage to Munich 1828
Robert Schumann Youth Pilgrimage Robert Schumann A Youth Pilgrimage to Munich 1828 Robert Schumann Youth Pilgrimage Introduction The young Schumann’s original sheets titled “Jünglings-Wallfarthen [Youth Pilgrimages]”, which he wrote down as a student in Heidelberg in 1830, are held at the Robert Schumann House in Zwickau. The nine journeys made between 1826 and 1830 took him to the following places: 1. Journey to Gotha, Eisenach, Weimar, Jena, 1826 2. Journey to Prague, 1827 3. Journey to Munich through Bavaria, 1828 4. Journey on the Rhine up to Heidelberg, 1829 5. Journey through Switzerland up to Venice, 1829 6. Journey through Baden to Strasbourg, 1830 7. Journey through Hesse to Frankfurt, 1830 8. Schwetzingen, Speyer, Worms and Rhenish Bavaria (Palatinate), 1830 9. Journey on the Rhine to Wesel and through Westphalia to Leipzig, 1830 The subsequent seven pages of prose text were titled “Erstes Gemählde. Reise nach Prag [First Picture. Journey to Prague]” but broke off in the middle of a sentence describing Colditz Castle. Unfortunately, Schumann never again got around to writing out his diary, kept in the form of keywords, as a continuous travel report. The slightly abridged version of Pilgrimage No. 3 below only covers the period between his departure from Zwickau and his stay in Munich. African Culture and the Zoo in the 21st Century: The “African Village” in the Augsburg Zoo and Its Wider Implications Report to the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology Advokatenweg 36 06114 Halle/Saale Germany http://www.eth.mpg.de Authors Prof. Dr. Nina Glick Schiller Dr. Data Dea Markus Höhne (Ph.D. candidate) 4th July 2005 Copyright © 2005 Glick Schiller, Dea, Höhne 1 Executive Summary The announcement by the zoo in Augsburg Germany that it was hosting an “African Village” set off a wave of controversy that received widespread media coverage. A global protest developed, fueled by the rapidity of e-mail communication, with concern voiced by African-German organizations, rights organizations, academic associations, a Nobel Prize winner, and concerned individuals from many countries. This report is based on attendance at the four day event, the “African Village” in the zoo from 9 June to 12 June 2005 and interviews with the various participants. Our findings are as follows: (1) The event was not a village displaying people but a market in the zoo augmented by African singing, drumming, and “oriental” belly dancing. (2) The event was organized primarily to earn revenue for the zoo, the promotion company, and the exhibitors and performers. (3) The event organizers linked the zoo and Africans in an endeavor to attract visitors by an “exotic” event; they perceived the zoo with its “African panorama” as a perfect environment for an African fair. (4) Solidarity with African people and mutual understanding were not primary aims of the event. (5) After visiting the zoo, visitors frequently linked Africa, Africans, wild animals and nature.

  • Mabula Ground-Hornbill Project Progress Report
Mabula Ground-Hornbill Project Progress Report Reporting Period: October 2014 – March 2015 thriving in mixed land-use environments: cultural protection is key Summary: The last six months have been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. We formed wonderful new collaborations, have designed the new ‘home’ of ground- hornbill chick rearing as a baobab of life, published a paper, found several new nests and completed a successful pilot project for our Custodianship Programme. These have kept us strong through some of the less wonderful times: suspected poisoning of three birds from our most successful release group, loss of a bird that swallowed a piece of wire found out in the bush which pierced its heart, two reported mortalities (one from disease and one poison) of wild free-roaming birds which put us in the level (three and more) that keeps the wild population declining, and the news that Tanzania has, for the second year in a row, set a completely unsustainable trade quota of 400 birds per year. Executant: Lucy Kemp Mabula Ground-Hornbill Project (016-183 NPO & 13/00/00/723 PBO) HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PAST SIX MONTHS THE MATOPOS, ZIMBABWE PLACE OF GIANT GRANITE BOULDERS, SOLITUDE AND MANY GROUND-HORNBILLS We are now thrilled to be working closely with an NGO called Children’s Nature Conservation Trust Zimbabwe who are continuing the monitoring of the Matopos area population and run a custodianship programme for each nest, similar to the programme we are initiating in South Africa. These nests in the granite boulders make our tree nests pale in comparison – so safe for the bird, so abundant and so much more logistically difficult to check.

  • Humans on Display: Reflecting on National Identity and the Enduring Practice of Living Human Exhibitions
Guido Abbattista Humans on Display: Reflecting on National Identity and the Enduring Practice of Living Human Exhibitions ἀνάγκη στῆναι Aristotle, Physics, l. III.6 Mon siège est fait Réné Aubert de Vertot, 1726 “Ah! For we Belgians”, Anneke told him, “this is a very important part of the Exposition. It will be the section devoted to the Belgian Congo and Ruanda- Urundi. On the other side, there is a tropical garden with a native village inside. All very authentic, with little huts and grass roofs! They’re even bringing some of the natives over to live here, for the time of the Expo. I can’t wait to see them. I have never seen a real black before. They look so strange and funny in photographs”. Thomas said nothing in reply to this but it gave him an uneasy feeling. There were plenty of black faces on the streets of London these days, and while he knew people who felt unhappy about it [...], he prided himself on being free of skin prejudice. If what Anneke said was true, he considered that this part of the Exposition struck the wrong note [...] She [Anneke] and some of the other hostesses had spent two hours looking for the little girl, only to find her sitting outside – of all places – one of the straw huts in the pavilion of the Belgian Congo, staring as if hypnotized at one of the half-naked natives as he stood and shivered in the unaccustomed chill of a North European summer evening [...] Anneke at one point asked him: “So you never got to see the pavilion of the Belgian Congo?”.
