WORZ Asian Elephant Facilities and Management Study Summary Prepared for Elephant Planning Workshop, 5 March 2018 Werribee Open Range Zoo − Zoos Victoria Jon Coe Design, Pty. Ltd. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Werribee Open Range Zoo has a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create the world’s best zoo elephant display and management system. It has the expansive site, agreeable climate, motivated and capable staff and most of all the animal welfare mandate to achieve this goal while creating a world-class visitor experience and adding essential research findings benefiting elephant managers the world over. Global populations of wild and traditionally managed elephants are plummeting and the need for self-sustaining insurance populations has never been greater. Thus, this program supports both Zoos Victoria's animal welfare and wildlife conservation mandates. Many in both the global modern zoo community and animal welfare groups agree that despite notable recent progress, zoo elephant facilities and management systems are still not good enough. This realization, supported by recent research and massive public support in many cities, has led to a new Golden Age in zoo elephant design and management, with breakthrough facilities recently across in the US and in Europe. This study profiles research findings from nine ground-breaking international zoo elephant facilities ranging from smaller, urban and intensively managed facilities such as those in Copenhagen and Dublin to expansive and more passively managed exhibits at Boras Djurpark in Sweden and the very green open range facility at North Carolina Zoo. It includes facilities displaying elephants with other species (Dallas Zoo, Boras Djurpark) and exhibits where elephants, rhinos and other species rotate (time share) in ever- moving circuits (Denver Zoo). -

Abstract The study analyses the epidemiology of selected infectious diseases of 65 different species within the four families of bovids, cervids, camelids and equids in one czech and nine German zoos. It is based on a survey of all epidemiologic data since 1998. Furthermore 900 blood samples taken between 1998 and 2005 are screened for the presence of antibodies against selected viral and bacterial pathogens. The results are linked to the epidemiologic data. Introduction The concept of mixed species exhibits increasingly becomes important in European zoos. It is an important form of behavioral enrichment, it optimizes the use of space and it is of great educational value for visitors, giving them an impression of ecological connections. But until now it has not been elucidated whether the kind of exhibit may lead to an increase in the prevalence of specific infections. The aims of this study are to evaluate the exposure of zoo-ungulates to a variety of disease pathogens that can be transmitted between different species and to assess the epidemiology of mixed exhibits. We are interested in the following questions: 1. Which selected infectious agents are zoo ungulates exposed to? 2. What is the seroprevalence against these agents? 3. Is there a correlation between seroprevalence and the following factors: - animal exhibition system (single species / mixed species exhibit) - population density and animal movements - interspecific contact rates 4. -

Zoo Biology 29 : 303–316 (2010) RESEARCH ARTICLE Thirty Years Later: Enrichment Practices for Captive Mammals à Julia M. Hoy, Peter J. Murray, and Andrew Tribe School of Animal Studies, The University of Queensland, Gatton Campus, Queensland, Australia Environmental enrichment of captive mammals has been steadily evolving over the past thirty years. For this process to continue, it is first necessary to define current enrichment practices and then identify the factors that limit enhancing the quality and quantity of enrichment, as well as the evaluation of its effectiveness. With the objective of obtaining this information, an international multi- institutional questionnaire survey was conducted with individuals working with zoo-housed mammals. Results of the survey showed that regardless of how important different types of enrichment were perceived to be, if providing them was particularly time-consuming, they were not made available to captive mammals as frequently as those requiring less staff time and effort. The groups of mammals provided with enrichment most frequently received it on average fewer than four times per day, resulting in less than two hours per day spent by each animal care staff member on tasks related to enrichment. The time required for staff to complete other husbandry tasks was the factor most limiting the implementation and evaluation of enrichment. The majority of survey respon- dents agreed that they would provide more enrichment and carry out more evaluation of enrichment if it was manageable to do so. The results of this study support the need for greater quantity, variety, frequency, and evaluation of enrichment provided to captive mammals housed in zoos without impinging on available staff time. -

This information pack will focus on the zoological sector. Within the UK ,there are 350 zoo licences, which cover zoos, as well as safari parks, aquaria and bird gardens. Collectively they employ approximately 3,000 full time workers. The main job roles in the zoological sector are animal keeping, veterinary work, conservation, research and educational work. It is important to remember these roles are linked and not exclusive from each other. For example, an animal keeper will also be part of conservation, research and education work, as well as limited veterinary work in some cases. 1 Roles of Zoos in the 21st Century Zoo are now more than just a good day out to see animals, zoo have a role to play in education, conservation and research. -

Activity Pack: African Animals This pack is designed to provide teachers with information to help you lead a trip to Colchester Zoo focusing on African Animals How to Use this Pack: This African Animal Tour Guide pack was designed to help your students learn about African animals and prepare for a trip to Colchester Zoo. The pack starts with suggested African animals to visit at Colchester Zoo including a map of where to see them and which encounters/feeds to attend. The next section contains fact sheets about these animals. This includes general information about the type of animal (e.g. where they live, what they eat, etc.) and specific information about individuals at Colchester Zoo (e.g. their names, how to tell them apart, etc.). This information will help you plan your day, and your route around the zoo to see the most African Animals. We recommend all teachers read through this pack and give copies to adult helpers visiting with your school trip. The rest of the pack is broken into “Pre-Trip”, “At the Zoo”, and “Post-Trip”. Each of these sections start with ideas to help teachers think of ways to relate African animals to other topics. There are also a variety of pre-made activities and worksheets included in this pack. Activities are typically hands on ‘games’ that introduce and reinforce concepts. Worksheets are typically paper hand-outs teachers can photocopy and have pupils complete independently. Teachers can pick and choose which they want to use since all the activities/worksheets can be used independently (you can just use one worksheet if you wish; you don’t need to complete the others). -

On the basis of that assessment, and in the light of the Secretary of State’s Standards of Modern Zoo Practice (SSSMZP) and the Zoos Forum Handbook (2008 - including the Annexes to Chapter 2), the project will make recommendations for: • minimum standards for conservation and education in a variety of sizes of zoo; and • methods for zoo inspectors to enable them to assess zoo conservation and educational activities.
