Herne Bay FC Supporters’ Update 39 – 24/02/2020

Week 39 which means it is nine months since the boardroom and management changes.

Ben Smith told the Kentish Gazette: “If you had said at the start of the season we would be in the play-offs, I’m sure every single person at the club would have taken it. So, looking at the bigger picture - it’s hard when you are frustrated - but I think that’s certainly something myself and the rest of the club need to be doing. We have good characters in the changing room. Our average age is around 24 but, within that, there is an awful lot of experience. I have no questions about the character in the dressing room and one or two (bad) games doesn’t change the fact that I’m really proud of how far we have come this season.”

Chris Saunders has joined SCEFL Hollands & Blair on dual registration. He was sent off (two yellow cards) on his debut, a 1-1- draw with Sheppey United.

Three Bridges had just two wins and one draw from their last 10 league matches and this month they handed bottom side East Grinstead Town four of their season’s tally of 10 points. 13 places and 27 points behind Herne Bay, Bridges showed that they can be a dangerous team when they went 3-0 up at home to Bay in October only for the visitors to come back with five goals in the second half. The Sussex side had sat in the lower reaches of the table all season. A straightforward win? A potential banana skin? 45 players had represented Bridges this campaign with Tom Tolfrey the top goalscorer on 10.

Ben Smith: “A big one now, it’s a must win if we have ambitions this season. The play-offs are still in our hands because at the end of the day we still have to play the teams around us. It’s still well in our hands but we are going to have to get out of this little dip quickly if we are going to threaten anything. This year, or any year really, all sides have players that have real quality on their hands in this league. Three Bridges have the likes of Tom Tolfrey on their hands. He fired Dorking up the leagues, didn’t he? So we have to make sure that we are not complacent.”

The website preview: Herne Bay, who start the day in fifth, have seen their impressive run halted by a draw and a defeat in their last two matches. They host Three Bridges, who have taken only one point from their last four matches - and only seven points out of the last thirty on offer - and who will be looking nervously over their shoulders as East Grinstead may have eight points fewer but they’ve played three games less.

Saturday 22nd Three Bridges H W 2-1 Cooper 45, Ansah 67 308 February 2020 (1-1) Herne Bay: George Kamurasi, Ryan Cooper, Patrick Nzuzi, Callum Adonis-Taylor, Laurence Harvey, Danny Lawrence (Bola Dawodu 84), Tushaun-Tyreese Walters (Sam Naiwo 86), Tom Carlton, , Anthony Edgar (Junior Aikhionbare 69), Keiron Campbell. Three Bridges: Kieron Thorp, Lee Hall, Hamilton Bunga, Tyrone Kirunda, Curtis Gayler, Brannon O'Neill, Tom Tolfrey, Ben Bacon (Oluwatobiloba Adekune), Charlie Towning (Billy Irving), Joe Stone, John Lansdale. There was just the one change with Bola Dawodu making way for the returning Anthony Edgar.

The matchday mascots were provided by Herne Bay Wanderers YFC.

For the seventh consecutive match Herne Bay retained their play-off position following a hard-fought victory over Three Bridges. With the top eight sides all winning there were no favours from the other results. Three Bridges took the surprise lead, but this was cancelled out with the half-time whistle almost at the lips of referee Scott Rudd. Zak Ansah made the points safe for Bay and the biggest surprise was that there were no bookings, particularly with Tushaun-Tyreese Walters on the end of some hefty challenges.

Ben Smith: “A lot of clubs are saying that it is 10-12 cup finals and that sort of scenario and it really is. Everyone won around us today and it was important that we got all three points. It keeps us up there and it gives us another few weeks where we are definitely involved in it and for us as a club, we take one step at a time. If we can keep involved with it until the last couple of weeks of the season it will be exciting times and enjoyable for us.”

Tushaun-Tyreese Walters caused Bridges defender, Tyrone Kirunda, trouble all afternoon and as early as the 2nd minute he had already fouled TT three times. Walters got the better of him in the 3rd minute but keeper Kieron Thorpe saved well.

Bridges had a long throw specialist in their side and from his first throw deep into the area Laurence Harvey headed away for a corner. From the corner Charlie Towning found himself totally unmarked and duly headed past George Kamusari from a yard out to give Bridges the early lead.

Spurred on by this early success Bridges were closing Bay down at every opportunity but as the game progressed it was the home side who looked more and more likely to score. Tom Carlton’s shot was deflected, fell to Walters but again Thorpe saved his left foot volley.

Carlton followed up with a good through ball to Ryan Cooper who fired in a low cross. Ansah met the cross and only a brilliant goal line clearance prevented a goal. Walters again got the better of his man, passed to Ansah and his low shot was going just wide of the target. Unfortunately for Bay Danny Lawrence just couldn’t get his foot to the ball at the far post. Herne Bay were so dominant it was hard to understand why they hadn’t scored. On the half hour mark, from a Carlton free kick, Ansah looped the ball over Thorpe only for the ball to again be cleared off the line. A minute later Ansah was put through behind the defender but his first- time volley was hit straight at Thorpe.

2

As the half was coming to an end Herne Bay were pinning Three Bridges in their own box. Carlton hit a shot from the edge of the area which Thorpe couldn’t hold. Walters raced in, shot but the ball was deflected away. Still Bay pressed and scored the goal which turned the game. Ansah shot from range, Thorpe saved with his fingertips turning it onto the post, but the ball rebounded out and Cooper raced in to fire a left foot volley past the keeper. This was Herne Bay’s 50th league goal of the season.

Bridges started the second half strongly and it took Bay fully 15 minutes to reassert their dominance. A brilliant piece of skill in his own half from Lawrence saw him break away from two Bridges players before sending a perfect ball putting Ansah through some 35 yards out. He looked up saw Thorpe was off his line and coolly lobbed the ball over the stoppers out-stretched arms into the back of the net and Bay were ahead.

Ben Smith: “Ansah’s goal, that’s just what he does, a fantastic finish. The composure made it look easy and it’s another one for his tally. We have a talisman who is going to score goals and it makes it a lot easier for everyone else.”

Bay were now in full control. Walters volleyed but Thorpe saved again. How Bay didn’t increase their lead in the 76th minute as Carlton cut in from the right and struck a superb volley which Thorpe pushed onto the bar. The ball ricocheted onto the post and was cleared to safety. Substitute Junior Aikhionbare won a header to put Walters clear but it wasn’t his day as Thorpe saved again. Finally, in the closing minutes Aikhionbare got the better of the defender and raced through only to slice his effort wide as Thorpe came off his line. At the end of the day a win is a win with the three points safely tucked away.

3

Ben Smith continued: “They came down here and made it hard Man of the Match – Ryan Cooper. Presented by for us. We switched off for their goal, but nonetheless a very Barry Tracy on behalf of Match Sponsors the family of Ray good header. You can’t take anything away from them. We were Kelly banging on the door in the first half. It was frustrating, it was very frustrating for all of us because suddenly you are chasing the game. I am convinced that when I look back at that first half, we played some very good stuff and were very close on a couple of occasions to capitalise. Their keeper made some good saves. I was frustrated but pleased at half time with the performance, that’s for sure.

I don’t think there is a bad team in the league this year. They’ll be some results where you see a big score now and again, but I think anyone on their day can cause problems. It was hard fought. Could we have made it easier for ourselves? Yes of course, if we had taken our chances in the first half it could have been plain sailing. In the second half, how its not gone in for Tom Carlton I will never know. What a shot, it hit the bar, the post, god knows how it has not gone in. Maybe if we had got the third it would have opened up for us. All the time it was 2-1 there’s a chance at the other end.

The first half Anthony Edgar looked really sharp and wanting to get on the ball; second half maybe his injury started to feature again. He’s had a week or so out and on this heavy pitch it was the right thing to do to bring him off and give him a rest. Dan Carrington did a fitness test today and he’s come through it, but we did not want to risk him, we have a lot of games coming up. Bradley Stevenson is still registered with the club, and we have a big decision to make whether he comes back into the squad. He is a real talent but at this stage of the season he knows that he has to knuckle down and earn his shirt.”

HERNE BAY FC FIRST TEAM

Tuesday Away Chichester City 25/02/2022

Please note: There is a pitch inspection at 12 noon on 25/02/2020. Please check the website or social media sites before travelling. At present Chichester are playing twice a week until the end of March in an attempt to catch up on their fixtures.

Fourth time lucky perhaps after two postponements due to Chichester’s progress in the FA Cup and one because of a waterlogged Oaklands Park pitch.

In their first season at Step Four Chi got off to a flying start, topping the table in the middle of September after five matches. Defeat to lowly Three Bridges followed and then in just over a month they had eight outings, all in cup competitions, and the inactivity saw them slip down to mid-table. It was in the FA Cup that they saw their greatest success, beating Erith Town, Bridon Ropes, Chalfont St Peter, Hartley Wintney, Enfield Town and Bowers Pitsea which saw them reach the First Round Proper. There was one bye up for grabs and being the last name out of the hat United progressed without playing.

Tranmere Rovers ended their FA adventure in front of 4,370 with a 5-1 victory but by then over £157,000 had been banked. Following the return from Merseyside fortunes took a dip and three league and cup games were lost and two drawn, but they have revived with six wins, a draw and one defeat (at Herne Bay) from their last eight league games. Chichester are two places and nine points behind Bay but have five games in hand.

Herne Bay are unbeaten in the league in midweek with three wins and two draws.

Ben Smith: “We need to achieve something at Chichester; we have beaten them once and there’s absolutely no reason why we can’t go down there and beat them again. They are a good side, one of the best sides we have played against. Our first thought with going down to Hastings was to go there and win and it’s the same with Chichester. There is no pressure on us at all; we are going into these games excited rather than what might happen. Our only ‘what if’ at the moment is what if we win and if we fall short from that attitude then we fall short.”

HERNE BAY FC FIRST TEAM

Saturday Away East Grinstead 29/02/2022 Town

Facts and statistics do not include Herne Bay’s (possible) game at Chichester City on 25/02/2020.

In March last year it was a strange afternoon for Herne Bay’s 300th Isthmian League match on their visit to East Court. An East Grinstead fan had entered a competition run by Richmond, the sausage manufacturers, to find the ‘Nation’s Favourite Fans’ and his winning prize was a big-match experience hosted by Harry Redknapp and Hayley McQueen. Rather than enhancing the afternoon, the pomp and ceremony distracted from the main event – the football match. 472 people made the most of the free admission and free hot dogs, but most never went back and they achieved a season’s average of 140. In the 18th minute Wasps’ keeper Brannon Daly rushed out of his area and flattened Ronnie Sobowale. Play was held up for five minutes as Sobowale received treatment; he was later taken to hospital to have six stitches in a mouth injury. Daly was given a straight red and his place taken by midfielder Leo Mazzone. East Grinstead Town manager Matt Longhurst claimed it was a “harsh red card early on for our goalkeeper.”

Ronnie is now with Whyteleafe (6th), Mazzone with Whitstable (13th) and Longhurst manages Ramsgate (19th). In early October following three draws and five defeats the Wasps hit the bottom of the table and have been there ever since. Longhurst was

sacked in December with former Kingstonian and Whyteleafe manager Leigh Dynan his replacement. Their solitary win from 25 league matches came at fellow strugglers Three Bridges who they gained a draw with three days later. On Saturday they played Whitehawk and lost 0-1.

Grin have used 74 players this season with Robin Deen the top appearance maker with 26. Herne Bay have eight players who have more appearances than that this campaign. Top scorer is ex-Ramsgate and Sittingbourne frontman Gil Carvalho with six. Bay’s Zak Ansah has scored 26 competitive goals this season to add to his nine in pre-season.

A brace from Tushaun-Tyreese Walters and a Zak Ansah penalty gave Bay a 3-1 victory at Winch’s Field in November. Herne Bay are 15 positions and 38 points ahead of East Grinstead; if only the result was determined by statistics but it is what happens on the pitch that wins football matches.

PROMOTION & RELEGATION

Promotion The top side will gain automatic promotion. The four next placed sides will enter the play-offs with second playing fifth and third playing fourth. The top placed sides will be at home.

The points per game gained by the fifth placed sides in the last seven seasons have been:

2012/13 1.69 2013/14 1.72 2014/15 1.76 Folkestone Invicta Hastings United Whyteleafe 2015/16 1.80 2016/17 1.78 2017/18 1.87 Faversham Town Hastings United Walton Casuals* 2018/19 1.75 Haywards Heath Town *Due to league restructuring three teams were promoted, first and second automatically and third to sixth made the play-offs which sixth place Walton Casuals won on penalties.

Mathematically it is still possible for all of the 20 clubs to gain enough points to make the play-offs. The current points per game standings are:

Hastings United 2.15 Ashford United 2.07 Cray Valley PM 1.96 Whitehawk 1.96 Herne Bay 1.78 Chichester City 1.77 Whyteleafe 1.73 Phoenix Sports 1.40 VCD Athletic 1.39 Haywards Heath Town 1.38 Sevenoaks Town 1.35 Hythe Town 1.32 Whitstable Town 1.30 Guernsey 1.29 Burgess Hill Town 1.20 Sittingbourne 1.12 Faversham Town 0.93 Three Bridges 0.64 Ramsgate 0.59 East Grinstead Town 0.40

Relegation

From 2020/21, there will be the introduction of an eighth division at Step Four, based in the North of the country to address travelling distances. For this season, 2019/20, at Step Four (e.g. Isthmian Division One South East) two clubs will be promoted to Step Three (e.g. Isthmian Premier) from each of the seven leagues, the league champions and the winners of the play-offs.

There will only be one possible relegation from each league at Step Four and that will be determined by a play-off with a team from Step Five. The 14 champions across Step Five (e.g. Southern Counties East) will automatically be promoted, with second and third place in the North West Counties, Northern League and Northern Counties East also automatically promoted. The remaining 11 second-place clubs will then be ranked on Points Per Game and the four highest will also be promoted to make the 24. Then with the remaining seven second-placed clubs – again a one-season scenario – will play-off with the seven bottom-placed clubs at Step 4 for a winner-takes-all game. So, the Step Four club wins and remains at the level or the Step Five club wins and gains promotion with the Step Four club relegated.

Sunday 23/02/2020 SECWFL League Cup Semi-Final

Herne Bay 4 (Jordan Langstone 2, Jemma Barton, Kate Foster) Lewes Foundation 0

Two first half goals set Herne Bay on their way to a third SECWFL League Cup Final appearance, cemented by two further strikes from Barton and Foster in the second period. The match had been postponed twice due to Storms Ciara and Dennis but at the third time of asking Bay got the game on. Lewes’s youngsters had been at Winch’s Field earlier in the season and given Bay something of a hiding in the league, but Bay were determined to show how far they have come this season and started strongly. Gifford and Langstone made powerful surging runs and it was from one such run that Jordan Langstone opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Lewes were stunned and Bay scored again on the stroke of half-time, always a good time to score it is said, when Langstone popped up on the right hand side of the box and rocketed a looping shot across the face of the goal and over the head of the ‘keeper.

After the break, Lewes were more determined, as they needed to be, but Bay stood firm with Jasmin Connolly denying the visitors with at least two top class saves. Goalkeepers often go unpraised, but her performance drew cheers from the crowd as great as that for any forward scoring at the other end. In the end it was to be another clean sheet, her seventh of the season. Jemma Barton settled the nerves with Bay’s third goal just after the hour mark and skipper Kate Foster put the game to bed and booked the Cup Final berth three minutes from time.

“The work rate today was fantastic and we thoroughly deserved that win”, said manager Howard Pearce, “we battled well, got goals at the right times and I’ve told them that result shows just how far the group has come. It’s great to be in a Cup Final, there’s a lot of smiling faces around today”.

This will be the third time Herne Bay have been in the SECWFL League Cup Final, the other two have ended in Bay lifting the Cup.
