Herne Bay FC Supporters’ Update 36 – 03/02/2020 The Match Preview from Hastings United: Hastings United’s league campaign continues on Tuesday 28th January with a visit from in-form Herne Bay. Last Saturday’s dramatic finale saw United score twice in the last ten minutes and rescue a point away to Sevenoaks Town. United fans heart rates will have just about settled down in time for this rearranged game which was postponed in December. Saturday’s result means United continued their unbeaten start to the new year, the draw going alongside four wins. The one-nil reverse at Ashford United remains the only league defeat. United found themselves two goals adrift at the weekend for the first time this season, indeed it is only the second time they have conceded more than one goal in a league game. Away to Guernsey being the other. On both occasions a belligerent refusal to accept defeat has seen United recover and claim a point. With Ashford losing on Saturday, the Sevenoaks draw meant the ‘U’s extended their lead at the top to five points. Herne Bay are displaying some form of their own. In their last six games they have won four, drawn one and lost one. This includes impressive away victories at Cray Valley and Guernsey. On Saturday they won 2 – 0 at home to Chichester City. This form has seen them climb to 6th in the table sitting just outside the play-off places. Actually, they are level on points with the teams in 4th and 5th, and with this game in hand to come.

The match will be the 91st time the Shield has been contested. The only match ever to go to a replay was the very first - in 1908. No club has a Shield pedigree like Manchester United. They were its first winners and have now clocked up a record 15 successes. They have shared the Shield an additional four times and have featured in a total of 28 contests. Wigan Athletic, by contrast, were a non-League club until 1978 and are playing the first Shield match in their 81-year history. The FA Charity Shield, its name until 2002, evolved from the Sheriff of London Shield - an annual fixture between the leading professional and amateur clubs of the time.

If ever we have started football in a season where life as we knew it seems a distant memory, it is this year! There is no doubt missing sport and in our case football, has highlighted the many things society has taken for granted. The sense of community, being part of community and all the benefits, it makes to all of us personally have indeed affected us all. We must acknowledge the people and families who have suffered greatly, both nationally and locally as a result of the pandemic we are currently battling. I would appeal to all and everyone to play your part to continue doing what is necessary to protect the more vulnerable in our community, after all it is someone’s mother, father, son, daughter we are helping. I also think it is appropriate to acknowledge all the front-line workers of all Industries, Trades and Professions in putting us ahead of themselves at this time at considerable risk to them and their families for the greater cause.
