Herne Bay FC Supporters’ Update 36 – 03/02/2020

The Match Preview from Hastings United: Hastings United’s league campaign continues on Tuesday 28th January with a visit from in-form Herne Bay.

Last Saturday’s dramatic finale saw United score twice in the last ten minutes and rescue a point away to Sevenoaks Town. United fans heart rates will have just about settled down in time for this rearranged game which was postponed in December.

Saturday’s result means United continued their unbeaten start to the new year, the draw going alongside four wins. The one-nil reverse at Ashford United remains the only league defeat.

United found themselves two goals adrift at the weekend for the first time this season, indeed it is only the second time they have conceded more than one goal in a league game. Away to Guernsey being the other. On both occasions a belligerent refusal to accept defeat has seen United recover and claim a point.

With Ashford losing on Saturday, the Sevenoaks draw meant the ‘U’s extended their lead at the top to five points.

Herne Bay are displaying some form of their own. In their last six games they have won four, drawn one and lost one. This includes impressive away victories at Cray Valley and Guernsey. On Saturday they won 2 – 0 at home to Chichester City.

This form has seen them climb to 6th in the table sitting just outside the play-off places. Actually, they are level on points with the teams in 4th and 5th, and with this game in hand to come.

Similar to Sevenoaks, this is a team who will score goals (39) but can also concede (33).

This is United’s long-standing game in hand and, with a 100% home league record, it’s a fantastic opportunity to open up an eight- point lead. They will want to take full advantage.

However, as mentioned, Herne Bay are clearly not daunted by difficult away games. They’ve won five times on the road already, which is one more than United. Plus, this is their own game in hand and if they leave the Pilot Field with a point, or all three, they’ll move into a play-off position.

Both teams have big incentives and it is shaping up to be a game not to be missed.

Ben Smith: “Hastings is the side that everyone looks at as maybe running away with the league, so we will be heavy underdogs. We need to go there with the confidence that we have at the minute and show the belief. It’s exciting to be in those type of games.”

Tuesday 28th Hastings United A D 0-0 510 January 2020 Herne Bay: George Kamurasi, Ryan Cooper, Dan Carrington, Laurence Harvey, Callum Adonis-Taylor, Bola Dawodu (Kyron Lightfoot 71), Tushaun-Tyreese Walters, Tom Carlton, , Danny Lawrence, Keiron Campbell (Chris Saunders 87). Hastings United: Louis Rogers, Ollie Black, Jerald Aboagye (Sam Beale), Gary Elphick, Craig Stone, Daniel Ajakaiye, Sam Adams, Ryan Worrall (James Pool), Lanre Azeez, Jack Dixon, Ben Pope (Kenny Pogue). Two precautionary changes were announced with Patrick Nzuzi and Danny Lawrence dropping to the bench with Dan Carrington and Bola Dawodu starting. Then was injured in the warm-up giving a start to Lawrence.

Herne Bay moved into the play-off places with a goalless draw at top of the table Hastings, who had not dropped a point at home in their previous 10 league outings, but there was a feeling that it could, and probably should, have been all three points for the visitors. With just one defeat from the last ten league matches (six wins and three draws) Bay are in an excellent position. The second consecutive match with a clean sheet and no bookings is also a satisfying statistic.

Ben Smith: “A really good performance, I thought the defensive shape was outstanding and we nullified the threats and qualities that they possess. They are a good footballing side, but we were spot on on the day and they were found wanting. They were looking for a Plan B and that Plan B couldn’t break us down. Apart from Big G’s triple save in the first half there wasn’t really a moment when they dominated our area. So, a fully deserved point. Could we have nicked it? Maybe, but I am sure that they could say the same. A good 0-0 for the neutral, but not the best for the managers and their heartrates.”

1

In the 14th minute Hastings’ Jack Dixon collected and fired in a shot forcing George Kamurasi into a full-length dive to parry away. The rebound fell to Ben Pope whose shot bounced clear off Kamurasi’s legs. Seconds later the ball landed with Pope again and in an exact repeat his shot hit the goalkeeper’s legs again. Seven minutes later Tom Carlton was in rampaging mood twice testing Louis Rogers between the sticks for Hastings.

United put their best move of the half together on the stroke of half-time. Adams, Jarod Aboagye and Lanre Azeez worked their way down the right and into the area. Aboagye seemed to be fouled and as the penalty claims were waved away Azeez was upended on the very edge of the box. The referee appeared to award a penalty based upon his assistants’ raised flag but after a brief consultation reverted to a free kick for the foul on Azeez. The resulting cross was cleared.

The two teams exchanged chances at the start of the second period. Sam Adams strike was over the bar for the home side with Zak Ansah’s reply being turned over by Rogers and just after the hour Gary Elphick headed just past the upright from a corner. Keiron Campbell’s cross was deflected producing yet another save from Rogers. Herne Bay then created the best chance of the game. Tushaun-Tyreese Walters sped to the by-line, delivered a low cross to Ansah and somehow his shot, from inside the six- yard box, was kept out by Rogers or the bar, or maybe a combination of the two.

With 20 minutes left on the clock Bola Dawodu went down injured and with an essential piece of medical equipment in the form of a stretcher not readily available he was carried all the way back to the dressing room by Kamurasi. To add further embarrassment to the Sussex side some of their players then complained to the referee that Big G had left the field of play without permission and on his return he received a torrent of foul abuse by some behind his goal.

Two minutes into the four added on Herne Bay had the last chance of the game when Freeman saved Lightfoot’s shot and again kept out Chris Saunders from the rebound.

Ben Smith continued: “It just shows how far we have come. I would say to the supporters that it is a big month in February, eight games, there is going to be some speed bumps along the way, we are going to hit a block in the road so it is important that they stay positive and keep behind us. We don’t need any moaning and groaning and slagging off. Let’s get that out of everyone’s mindset now. We are in a position where we can fight for a play-off spot. If we had said that at the start of the year everyone would have bitten our hands off. Let’s take our position, embrace it and enjoy it. There is no need to be stressed and upset with things, it is all about enjoyment now and being positive because we have a good opportunity and things are good at the minute. There is strength and depth to the squad, and everyone is putting good performances in.”

Comments from the Hastings’ United FC Fans Forum:

“Probably a fair result, Herne Bay useful side, one of the best seen this season.”

“Yet another tough match against in-form opponents who made us work hard for a point.”

“Lucky to come away with a point, HB were a very tough team.”

“At times agreed with the Herne Bay chants of "Boring, boring Hastings."

“It certainly was good to have a proper game last night.”

And from the obligatory idiot who seems oblivious to the fact that there are 22 players on the pitch and seems only to notice the performance of the match officials: “What it with the refs ffs he doesn't give a blatant penalty then the linesman flags for a foul then the ref gives a penalty then gose over to the linesman and gives a free kick wft is going on and not giving another penalty when the defender plays it with there arm its becoming a joke now.”

On Big George heroically replacing the absent stretcher:

“Three decent saves in short succession in the first half, followed in the second by carrying an injured team-mate from the field, cradling him in his arms like a small child being rescued from a burning building. Having taken him down the tunnel and into the dressing room, he returned to applause from most of the ground, except, of course, the mob behind the goal who preferred bellowing "DROP DEAD, YOU C***" and similar "banter" at him instead.”

There ensued a discussion regarding the behaviour of some of the Hastings crowd: 3

“…the 'banter' was expletive after expletive, will hardly encourage families to attend and create a community atmosphere. At times I wanted to cover my sons ears!”

“I can live with the swearing, to be honest. Sometimes tempers fray; fair enough. Sometimes it's funny; fair enough. But I think it ought to be possible to support your own team without spitting bile at every opponent. I hate the attitude which says that paying the price of admission gives you the right to scream abuse at someone a few yards away. Apart from some fairly mild time-wasting, of the type that nobody complains about when it's their own team, I missed the bit where that keeper did anything to deserve the torrent of furious c-words which were aimed in his direction. Fair play to him for still coming over to shake a couple of people's hands at the end; a bigger man (quite literally!) than any of his abusers.”

“On the issue on abusing opponents if it’s because of something they have clearly done either in the game or in the past then though not ideal it is understandable as football can be a passionate game on and off the pitch. However, abusing players just because they are the opponent isn’t and perhaps the club needs additional stewards to try and stop any future needless abuse.”

“Iv got to admit it there is to many c words flying about at the moment I for one hate the word. Maybe things need to be said again as it is going over the top. But they you go to any football ground up and down the country it will never be stopped no matter what happens.”

“It might actually be more fun to have a bit of a laugh with the opposition keeper rather than just incessantly screaming the c-word at him.”

“Have to say I feel there is absolutely no justification for the disgraceful, foul mouthed abuse that some opponents' keepers are subjected to. I agree it's a game of high emotion and hearing bad language is inevitable...but just pouring abuse onto an opponent is totally unacceptable...you wouldn't do it outside a football ground so why do it inside?”

Sam McCallum moved from Coventry City to Norwich City in a £3million deal.

4

At the age of 15 he feared his hopes of a career in football were over after he was dropped from Gillingham's academy but McCallum, a product of Herne Bay Youth FC, was determined and had been playing for Herne Bay Under 16s, Under 18s and Herne Bay Development before making his Herne Bay first team debut, as a substitute, at home to Margate, in the on 13/09/2017. Attending Simon Langton Grammar School and as a regular for Kent Schoolboys he was selected for the England Schoolboys’ squad in January 2018. His Herne Bay league debut, again from the bench, came away at Hythe Town on 06/02/2018 and then his first start was at Ramsgate on 17/02/2018. He made his debut for England Schoolboys in the Centenary Shield against Northern Ireland at Luton Town FC on 10/03/2018 and was ever-present during the campaign earning many accolades. He was Herne Bay’s Man of the Match at home to Carshalton Athletic on 10/04/2018 and he scored his first Herne Bay goal, away at Corinthian-Casuals, 11 days later. His six appearances for Herne Bay were four starts and two as a substitute.

McCallum has always had his feet firmly on the ground and after attending the first ADFA (Anthony Deer Football Academy) Soccer School at the age of five he followed this up by giving back to his roots as a referee for ADFA youth tournaments in the late 2010’s.

During the summer of 2018 he attended the V9 Academy at Manchester City’s training ground and attracted interest from several and Football League clubs. McCallum joined Coventry City in a three-year deal on Deadline Day in August 2018. At the time he was fourth choice left back and linked up with Coventry Under-23s. He made his first team debut against Cheltenham Town in the Checkatrade Trophy in November 2018, before making his football league debut against Southend United in December 2018. McCallum didn't have to wait long for his first start, as that came against AFC Wimbledon in January 2019. He made seven league and one cup appearance in his first season with the Sky Blues.

This campaign he has established himself in the first team set up, making 27 appearances in all competitions, scoring three times. Amidst rumours that Premier League leaders Liverpool were interested in his signature, on 31/01/2020 it was announced that he had signed for Premier League Norwich City but would be loaned back to Coventry City for the rest of the season.

Coventry City manager said: “Sam is a player with great ability and potential in the game, and there has been much interest in him this season. To us, it was unfortunately a case of ‘when’ not ‘if’ Sam would leave, such was the level and nature of the interest. We rejected an offer earlier this week for him, but Norwich have now made a substantial bid that we have accepted. As part of the deal, Sam will return on loan to us for the rest of the season and we look forward to continuing to work with him and have no doubt he will be an important and positive influence in the rest of the campaign.”

McCallum’s father, Jon Warden, said he realised his son had a special talent when he was aged just four. “Sam hit a half-volley right into my hands. I thought then that was very unusual. He struck it so well and his timing was spot on. We’re pinching ourselves because he’s always said he’s wanted to be a footballer and lo and behold he is one now. He’s realised that dream.” Warden, who was with Herne Bay for many seasons, as a player and coach, is himself a Wembley winner, having been in the Deal Town squad that won the FA Vase in 2000.

Herne Bay faced a very busy February with eight matches in 29 days. With five Saturdays in the month, for the first time since 1992, all of their eight opponents were currently in the bottom half of the table.

Ben Smith: “I think, by February 22, after the home game against Three Bridges, we will know where we are at. We have some big games coming up, playing Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday. The games against the likes of Ramsgate and Faversham are not easy games at all. The league table might suggest that but they will be very tough games.”

Hythe Town had played the equal most games (23) in the league so far this season and two more than Herne Bay. In September 2019 with the Cannons sitting in the bottom three in the division with three points from four matches Sam Denly resigned and was replaced by Steve Watt. After a less than inspiring start to Watts’ tenure Hythe gradually crept up the table and sat in 11th place, six positions and six points behind Bay. The Reachfield revolving doors had been in constant use with players coming and going on a regular basis and we could expect to see a much changed side than the one that beat Bay twice earlier in the season in the league (2-0) and the Velocity Trophy (2-1), but then again there had been several important additions to Herne Bay’s squad since then too. Hythe had won six of their last seven outings, the only defeat coming at the hands of Whitstable.

5

Ben Smith: “If you look at the players they (Hythe) have got, they have what I’d say is the most experienced team in the league. A lot of the players they have brought in have dropped down leagues to be there. They made some great signings last week, as well. I would say this is probably the hardest game we have got left by a mile. But we go there with nothing to fear. I know they beat us in the league earlier in the season (2-0 in September) but both sides are very different now. In the Velocity Trophy game (a 2-1 Hythe success in November), that wasn’t the side we would normally have out, so you can’t really read too much into that, either. With the form they are in, they probably go in as favourites. But I think form goes out the window in these games. They probably have to win to stay in with a chance of making the play-offs now. Obviously, we have a few games in hand on them. So if we can go there and get a win, it will be massive.”

Hythe manager Steve Watt: “We’ve played them twice (Herne Bay) and won both times but that will count for nothing on Saturday. They’re having a great run and will probably be looking to get promotion with the squad they’ve got. We’ve got a big month coming up, by the end of it we’ll probably know what our fate is going to be.”

The website preview: “Fifth place Herne Bay earned a useful point at Hastings in midweek, and travel for a clash of two form sides as they head to Hythe Town. Bay have only one defeat from their last ten matches, but the Cannons have won six of their last seven and aren’t likely to be overawed.”

Saturday 1st Hythe Town A D 1-1 Own goal (34) 302 February 2020 (1-0) Herne Bay: George Kamurasi, Ryan Cooper, Dan Carrington (Simon Kabamba 64), Laurence Harvey, Callum Adonis-Taylor, Bola Dawodu, Tushaun-Tyreese Walters, Tom Carlton, Zak Ansah, Anthony Edgar (Danny Lawrence 75), Keiron Campbell. Hythe Town: Will Godmon, Ross Ibbertson, Nathan Gordon, James Rogers, Jamie Coyle, Tom Wynter, Charlie Webster (Jarred Trespaderne), Danny Walder (Darren Oldaker), Alex Flisher, Frannie Collin, Tom Murphy (Tom Walmsley). Anthony Edgar returned moving Danny Lawrence to the bench.

Not too much entertainment for the 302 crowd, with both sides below par and referee Ian Bentley not allowing the game to flow. Going into the break a goal up, Herne Bay needed to come out for the second period and show an improved performance. Too often the ball went astray, and chances were squandered for both sides with parity eventually being restored for the home team. Another point on the board, against a club with some of the biggest resources in the league, still in the play-off zone and in a position to press for moving further up the table.

Ben Smith: “It was a terrible game of football. We had a 0-0 draw (at Hastings), probably the best 0-0 I’ve come across but that was a bad game of football (today), really bad. I think we were poor; I don’t think they (Hythe) were great. I don’t know anyone from both sides had a good game today. The game was stop-start. It was a typical non-league game where it was just lumped to and fro.”

The first chance came Bay’s way, in the 4th minute, when Tushaun-Tyreese Walters’ chip landed on the roof of the net following good play from Keiron Campbell and Dan Carrington. Tom Wynter’s volley went past the near post; Zak Ansah was put through on goal and he found Campbell who slid in to poke the ball just past the foot of the post; Charlie Webster unleashed a right-footed angled drive from 15-yards, which was parried by George Kamurasi; Tom Murphy’s volley screamed across the keeper and through a crowded box and past the far post from 22-yards and Webster drilled his drive across the face of goal and just past the foot of the far post.

6

When Herne Bay’s goal came, in the 34th minute, it was one of the most unusual seen all season. Awarded a corner, Bola Dawodu took his place on the goal line. In an attempt to protect his goalkeeper James Rogers bundled into Dawodu only making matters worse as Will Godman grabbed him, they fell to the ground. Tom Carlton swung over the corner which Callum Adonis-Taylor narrowly missed and standing behind him was the home side’s striker Alex Flisher who headed into an empty net with Godman looking on from his position on the ground. Hythe protested about an alleged infringement on Godman, but referee Ian Bentley, after the game, admitted that if it had not been a goal then Bay would have won a penalty for the foul by Rogers on Dawodu.

Then Carlton’s corner was played short to Walters and Carlton and Campbell linked up down the left before Carlton, 25 yards out wide, swung in a shot/cross, which sailed over the keeper’s left shoulder and dropped and hit the crossbar. Walters cut the ball back for Dawodu, whose hooked shot bounced into Godmon’s hands. Kamurasi pulled off a brilliant save at the end of the first half. Jamie Coyle met Danny Walder’s corner and from six yards his downward header was flicked behind for a corner by Kamurasi, low to his left.

7

Three minutes after the interval Campbell fed Ansah down the left and he cut the ball onto his right-boot before flashing his right- footed drive across the keeper and just past the foot of the far post. Just past the hour mark Anthony Edgar put Cooper in down the right. He sprinted to keep the ball in play before cutting back for Ansah, who curled his shot around the keeper and past the far post. Campbell then had two bites of the cherry, his first driven shot was blocked and his second rolled into the hands of Godmon.

The equaliser came with 14 minutes left on the clock. Webster released Ross Ibbertson on the overlap; he whipped in a low cross which flashed across the face of goal. Kamurasi stretched but failed to cut the cross out and Collin slid in at the far post to poke the ball into the bottom left-hand corner from on the goal- line.

Campbell, Walters and Carlton linked up before Ansah right- footed shot on the turn was saved by Godmon inside the final 10 minutes. At the other end, Darren Oldaker floated in a deep cross, which was put back into the box by Coyle and Flisher’s looping header was caught by Kamurasi; Carlton whipped a 28- yard free-kick over the Hythe Town wall into the side netting before he teed up a free-kick to Ansah, who drilled his shot over the crossbar.

Dawodu flicked on a big kick from Kamurasi, before Campbell cut into the box and crossed for Walters, who poked his first time shot past the foot of the post and Collin missed the last chance of the match hitting his volley over the crossbar.

Two successive draws against top of the table and then the side with the most experienced players in the league is pleasing with the remaining seven games in February against the teams who are 19th, 15th, 17th, 13th, 18th, 12th and 20th in the league table and give the opportunity to build on the points tally and cement the play-off position but each and everyone could be a potential banana skin.

Ben Smith continued: “We huffed and puffed, we didn’t quite have that spark in us today, whether that’s in defensive areas, getting out to close the ball down or whether it was in attacking areas, getting a finish to things. We’re disappointed today, I’ve got to be honest, we’re disappointed.

We’ve been flying, we’ve been doing well all season and we have to look at the positives, look at the bigger picture. We’ve come away at Hythe, which I think will be a very tough place for anyone to come the back end of the season. Some of the players they’ve got and the ones that they are signing, we’ve come away from here today and we’ve got a point. We got a point away at Hastings, at the end of the season I’m hopeful those points will make a big difference to us. We’re happy with where we are at the minute, but we need to pick it up again and go again.”

Steve Watt: “I feel at times today the ball didn’t bounce our way wither there was a couple of times we got in good areas and it’s a cross and it takes a deflection and rather it falls to you, it fell to them. It was one of those days, which happens. I’m really happy with the character the boys have shown today. You’re 1-0 down at home, against a side that’s (lost one game in their last 10 league games) and we’ve come away and everyone in our dressing room is disappointed we didn’t get three points but on the other hand I’m very, very pleased that we’re playing the way we are and how good we’re looking at the moment.”

So far this season Ramsgate have had three managers, two chairmen and 54 players so perhaps it is no surprise that they have been in the bottom three for the majority of the season. On 26/10/2019 they beat Whyteleafe 3-1 then went on a run of 13 league games in three months without a victory (10 defeats and 3 draws) which ended on 25/01/2020 with a win over bottom side East Grinstead Town who were without a win so far this season. On Saturday they got back to losing ways being defeated by fellow strugglers Three Bridges 2-0. They sit 14 places and 24 points below Herne Bay and have played one game more.

Saturday Away Haywards Heath 08/02/2022 Town

The following statistics do not include the games played on 04/02/2020 & 05/02/2020.

After the first three games of the campaign Haywards Heath Town were top of the table with seven points from nine but by the beginning of October, they had slumped to 11th and it has been downhill all the way since then. Beset by postponements caused by their progress in the FA Trophy, waterlogged pitches and an abandoned game at Sevenoaks they have dropped behind in their matches. Three successive defeats came prior to their match at Chichester being postponed on Saturday and they face a trip to Guernsey on Wednesday. Thus far they are the leagues lowest goalscorers but only Hastings and Cary Valley have conceded less.

The review of Season 2018 – 2019.

It consists of 128 pages, over 59,000 words and over 500 photos, it is A4 softback and professionally printed. It contains a full review of 2018/19, full of photos, match reports and memories. It retails for a bargain £10 and will be available from Tuesday in the Club Shop or from Steve Barton. It is dedicated to the memory of the co-author of our previous books, Ray Kelly, who sadly passed away during the season. As well as the First Team included are details of the Development side, the Ladies team and the Youth sides and there are loads of photos of those on the terraces!

All proceeds are ploughed back into the cost of printing future volumes.
