Title of Thesis/Project/Extended Essay Author:- (signature) 24 4ualcs-t 1443' (date) ABSTRACT By categorizing Flora Annie Steel as a mjnor, popular, <-gkA'iim- and by concentrating primarily on her literary work, studies of this nineteenth-century imperial subject have continued to position her, and the wider study of imperialism, within hierarchical, imperialist frameworks. I problematize and attempt to move beyond such frameworks by examining the ways in which Flora Steel's authority was constructed through and around her autobiographical and professional writing. I examine the production of subjectivity in genealogy through a meta-biographical investigation of Steel's memoir, The Garden of Fidelity. I then develop a rhetorical analysis of Flora Steel's reports as Inspector of Schools in Punjab to investigate the strategies she employed to position herself as both a woman and a government official in the context of arguments over what constitutes an educated Indian woman. Although Steel's literary career was predicated on her supposed "knowledge" of India and especially of Indian women, that career was established in late-nineteenth-century Britain, where imperial subjectivity was overdetermined by complex forces, including rapidly-changing relationships governing text-production. Moving beyond purely literary views of subjectivity and authorship, I examine the rhetorical strategies Steel used to negotiate these complex forces. In the 1UOs, however, discovering (or deciding) that she would have no more children, and apparently growing restless, she entered public discourse first as an educator and then as a storyteller and historian. In her time she was known as the "eRudyardKipling," -- but while Kipling's life and work are still discussed and read, Flora Steel's life and work have been largely forgotten. In recent years, with the surge of interest in the British "Raj" and in women's participation in imperialism, Flora Steel has begun to enter public discourse again. Daya Patwardhan's A Star of India (1963) and Violet Powell's Flora Annie Steel (1981) have reclaimed Flora Steel for the romance of Anglo-India mostly from her own memoirs and from the reminiscences of friends. The results have been largely laudatory, although Patwardhan's book includes useful lists of book reviews in the popular press of Steel's time. Some studies have sought to reclaim Flora Steel for her supposed heritage as in Alex M. Cain's The Cornchest For Scotland: Scots in India (1986) in which Steel's life and work are held up with other "Scots contributions" to education and medicine. Other critics have perceived her and her work as morally inferior to more "sensitive" (and therefore more "literary") authors like E. M. Forster (Parry 100-30), or as morally inferior to "more feminist" women in India like Annie Besant (Paxton 158-76). Yet Flora Steel's entry into public discourse cannot be reduced to her supposed identity as an Anglo- Indian, a Scot, an author, or a woman. Situated as it was between Britain and "India" in the nineteenth century, that public discourse cannot be seen apart from the wider discursive field of European imperialism. Before I discuss Steel, therefore, I will sketch the broad outlines of a phenomenon that has been produced within and as part of the Western discursive field of which any study of Flora Steel, including this one is necessarily also a part. 1. fIolding the Fort: Imperial Studies From the Centre Imperialism, as Edward Said, Gayam Spivak, and other commentators have described it, is a mapping of cultural and geographical temtory employing an ideology of possession and control. Viewed historically, its modem dimensions are commonly seen as extending roughly from Columbus' "discovery" of the Americas to the nationalist liberatory politics of the pre- and post-WWII nation-state configuration. In influence and sheer acquisitiveness, Britain is seen to have played the largest role. Whether decolonization has marked some sort of end to imperialism and the closely related phenomenon of colonialism, so that imperialism can be consigned to history from a "post-colonial" position, is open to debate. Nevertheless, it seems clear that "history" marks the present, and that the impulse to imperialism has found different ways to produce the same effects. Geographical and cultural imperialism and colonialism may still be very much alive in the transnational corporatism described by Masao Miyoshi ("Borderless" 1993) or in the maximizing, extractive, "separating, dominating and reactive" tendencies which continue to structure Western concepts and practices of knowledge production (Said C&I 39). Indeed, studies of imperialism have tended to reproduce the very structures of domination they have sought to describe. The formal study of the British Empire is supposed to date from 1883 when J. R. Seeley published his Cambridge lectures on The Expansion of England. The lectures attempt to construct the empire as something which, in that infamous phrase, England has acquired "in a fit of absence of mindM(lO)in addition to something which has been imposed on the English by the overwhelming force of history, and can simultaneously be controlled through comprehensive knowledge of "Greater BritainU(l1).

    Thirteen nations on Mount Everest John Cleare In Nepal the 1971 pre-monsoon season was notable perhaps for two things, first for the worst weather for some seventy years, and second for the failure of an attempt to realise a long-cherished dream-a Cordee internationale on the top of the world. But was it a complete failure? That the much publicised International Himalayan Expedition failed in its climbing objectives is fact, but despite the ill-informed pronouncements of the headline devouring sceptics, safe in their arm-chairs, those of us who were actually members of the expedition have no doubt that internationally we did not fail. The project has a long history, and my first knowledge of it was on a wet winter's night in 1967 at Rusty Baillie's tiny cottage in the Highlands when John Amatt explained to me the preliminary plans for an international expedi­ tion. This was initially an Anglo-American-Norwegian effort, but as time went by other climbers came and went and various objectives were considered and rejected. Things started to crystallise when Jimmy Roberts was invited to lead the still-embryo expedition, and it was finally decided that the target should be the great South-west face of Mount Everest. However, unaware of this scheme, Norman Dyhrenfurth, leader of the successful American Everest expedition of 1963-film-maker and veteran Himalayan climber-was also planning an international expedition, and he had actually applied for per­ mission to attempt the South-west face in November 1967, some time before the final target of the other party had even been decided.

The journalist Tomalin cited as the originator of ‘ratlike cunning’ was Murray Sayle, like Byas, a long-serving Japan corres- pondent, who in 2005 returned to his native Sydney after thirty years’ incisive correspondence from Tokyo.1 Hugh Byas seems at different times in his twenty-seven years report- ing from Tokyo to have exercised most of the qualities on Tomalin’s list. The depths of his cunning are hard to plumb, but his manner must have been more than a little plausible for he inspired trust and enjoyed lasting friendships with a wide circle of people, most of whom had little else in common. Garza This report delves into the events that occurred on August 21st 1968 in Czechoslovakia and October 2nd 1968 in Mexico. The invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union and the massacre at Tlatelolco are two crucibles that remain a significant factor in the mindset of people from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Mexico today. In my writing I draw parallelisms between these two events, that occurred mere months from each other, on different continents and had students asking one common thing from their respective governments, they wanted to be heard. The invasion of Czechoslovakia came as a surprise; the country’s new leader Alexander Dubcek was relaxing the government’s stronghold on the media and freedom of press was slowly becoming a reality. These advances did not sit well with Leonid Brezhnev and the Soviet Politburo so they made a rash decision to invade; the Soviets believed that losing their stronghold in Czechoslovakia would lead to their demise in other Eastern European countries.

    Shadows of the Raj: Anglo-Indian Visions of Empire, the Raj Revival, and the Literary Crafting of National Character by GENEVIEVE GAGNE-HAWES B.A. Whitman College, 2003 M.A. New York University, 2007 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (English) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) November 2012 © Genevieve Gagne-Hawes, 2012 i ABSTRACT In my dissertation, I argue for a relationship of influence between the authors of what I define as the Raj novel genre, or works by British writers who lived in India between 1858 and 1947 and produced novels set in that country, and authors of the so-called “Raj Revival” in 1970s and 1980s Great Britain. The latter encompasses bestselling, award-winning novels (M.M. Kaye’s The Far Pavilions, Paul Scott’s Raj Quartet; J.G. Farrell’s The Siege of Krishnapur, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Heat and Dust) and films (David Lean’s A Passage to India) that nostalgically revisit the Raj experience. Both movements claim ideal British character is manifested by Anglo- Indians, British persons living and working in India, who develop a series of exemplary character traits through the rigors of daily service in the subcontinent. In the Raj novel genre, this model of Anglo-Indian character—and the concurrent denigration of Indian character—is used as a strategy by which to elevate the nascent Anglo-Indian community. In the Raj Revival, the Raj novel genre’s ideals are deployed in support of the conservative shift that occurred during Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s tenure (1979-1990).

    Chronology of Aum Shinrikyo’s CBW Activities Introduction Six years ago, on March 20, 1995, five members of the Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo (Supreme Truth) boarded subway trains in Tokyo, Japan, and released the deadly chemical nerve agent sarin. The attack killed 12 people and injured over 1,000, of whom 17 were critically injured (requiring intensive care), 37 were severely injured (with muscular twitching and gastrointestinal problems), and 984 were slightly injured (with pinpoint pupils but no other symptoms). Aum’s interest in chemical and biological weapons (CBW) terrorism can be traced back to 1990. Between 1990 and 1995, Aum launched 17 known CBW attacks, with motivations ranging from assassination to mass murder. Of these attacks, 10 were carried out with chemical weapons (four with sarin, four with VX, one with phosgene, and one with hydrogen cyanide) and seven attempted attacks were carried out with biological agents (four with anthrax and three with botulinum toxin, although in both cases the microbial strains were apparently nonvirulent). In addition to these cases, Aum is alleged to have killed 20 of its dissident members with VX and has been linked more tenuously to more than 19 other CBW attacks and attempted attacks (13 attacks where Aum involvement is suspected and six possible copycats). Since 1995, many of the perpetrators of the Tokyo subway attack have been jailed and are awaiting trial, and others have been sentenced to life in prison or to death by hanging. Although Aum has changed its name to Aleph, has decreased significantly in numbers, and claims to focus on its computer software company, its dangerous apocalyptic ideology remains.

Manfredi was released an 1250,000 bond Friday to await sentencing on his conWction in the bludgeoning death of his wife. Manfredi was released at 11:20 a.m. from the Hartford Correctional Center and drove off with Caesar Noble, one of his defense attorneys. Manfredi declined to comment. Another defense attorney, Wil­ liam Galliotti, said restrictions imposed under terms of Manfredi’s pre-trial bond, including a ban on his visiting his children, will remain in effect. He said he expected Manfredi to return to Pennsylvania to be with his family. Manfredi’s three sons have been staying with a maternal aunt in Dunmore, Pa. His release was made possible by Superior Court Judge Thomas Corri­ gan's ruling Wednesday that Man- fredi's priest’s cottage could be used to secure $125,000 of Manfredi’s $250,000 bond. Galliotti said. The Rev. James F. Leary, now at St. Joseph’s Church in Bristol, was assistant pastor at the West Hart­ ford church where the Manfredis were members and testified on Manfredi’s behalf during the trial. Once Upon a Time in the Land of Five Rivers: A Comparative Analysis of Translated Punjabi Folk Tale Editions, from Flora Annie Steel’s Colonial Collection to Shafi Aqeel’s Post-Partition Collection and Beyond A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, in English Literature Massey University, Manawatu Campus, New Zealand Noor Fatima, 2019 i Abstract This thesis offers a critical analysis of two different collections of Punjabi folk tales which were collected at different moments in Punjab’s history: Tales of the Punjab (1894), collected by Flora Annie Steel and, Popular Folk Tales of the Punjab (2008) collected by Shafi Aqeel and translated from Urdu into English by Ahmad Bashir. The study claims that the changes evident in collections of Punjabi folk tales published in the last hundred years reveal the different social, political and ideological assumptions of the collectors, translators and the audiences for whom they were disseminated. Each of these collections have one prior edition that differs in important ways from the later one. Steel’s edition was first published during the late-colonial era in India as Wide- awake Stories in 1884 and consisted of tales that she translated from Punjabi into English. Aqeel’s first edition was collected shortly after the partition of India and Pakistan, as Punjabi Lok Kahaniyan in 1963 and consisted of tales he translated from Punjabi into Urdu.
