Baker M.A., Bowling Green State University, 2000 M.A., Karl Franzens University, Graz, Austria, 1998 Committee Chair: Katharina Gerstenberger ABSTRACT “The Return of the Child Exile: Re-enactment of Childhood Trauma in Jewish Life- Writing and Documentary Film” is a study of the literary responses of writers who were Jewish children in hiding and exile during World War II and of documentary films on the topic of refugee children and children in exile. The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the relationships between trauma, memory, fantasy and narrative in a close reading/viewing of different forms of Jewish life-writing and documentary film by means of a scientifically informed approach to childhood trauma. Chapter 1 discusses the reception of Binjamin Wilkomirski’s Fragments (1994), which was hailed as a paradigmatic traumatic narrative written by a child survivor before it was discovered to be a fictional text based on the author’s invented Jewish life-story. -

Shortly before dawn on September 1, 1983, a Boeing 747 Flight KE007 of Korean Air Lines was shot down over Sakhalin Island in the Soviet Far East by an SU-15 fighter of the Soviet Air Force, with the loss of all 269 passengers and crew on board. The incident set off a contest in vituperation between the super-powers, which, a year and a half later, still reverberates. President Reagan called the shoot-down "a terrorist act to sacrifice the lives of innocent human beings," while the Soviets have never ceased charging that the aircraft was engaged on a "special mission" of electronic espionage on behalf of the United States, thus by implication justifying what they call their "termination" of the flight. -

Learning About Self and Others Through Autobiography
Curriculum Units by Fellows of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute 1988 Volume III: Autobiography in America Learning About Self and Others Through Autobiography Curriculum Unit 88.03.10 by Debbie Diane Sumpter This curriculum unit will be used as a segment of the American literature course for general level sophomores. Also, it could be integrated into a college or honors level novel course since most of the short stories used in this unit are adaptations from novels. It should take at least four to five weeks to cover adequately the stories and the poem in this unit. My first thoughts about teaching a unit about “self” came to me after teaching for nine weeks at Career High School. Since I had previously only taught in the South, I was accustomed to teaching only black and white students. Teaching in New Haven has exposed me to Jewish, Puerto-Rican, Mexican, and Danish students. I became very interested in the different cultures of my students, and I also realized that my students lacked self esteem and respect for other students and their cultures. Therefore, I decided to devise a unit that would unit the different backgrounds of my students and help them learn more about themselves and their classmates. In order to achieve the objectives to be discussed later in this unit, the main focus of this unit will be the autobiography. The autobiography will be the main focus because it will allow students the opportunity to truthfully examine their feelings, thoughts, and actions. This will enable students to get in touch with themselves, and getting to know and understand others. -

I want to thank the History faculty at Chapman, especially Dr. Bay, for the endless help and support they provided as I navigated through a change of major. I want to thank Dr. Klein, without whom this paper would’ve never taken flight or been of any worth to me.
