Baker M.A., Bowling Green State University, 2000 M.A., Karl Franzens University, Graz, Austria, 1998 Committee Chair: Katharina Gerstenberger ABSTRACT “The Return of the Child Exile: Re-enactment of Childhood Trauma in Jewish Life- Writing and Documentary Film” is a study of the literary responses of writers who were Jewish children in hiding and exile during World War II and of documentary films on the topic of refugee children and children in exile. The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the relationships between trauma, memory, fantasy and narrative in a close reading/viewing of different forms of Jewish life-writing and documentary film by means of a scientifically informed approach to childhood trauma. Chapter 1 discusses the reception of Binjamin Wilkomirski’s Fragments (1994), which was hailed as a paradigmatic traumatic narrative written by a child survivor before it was discovered to be a fictional text based on the author’s invented Jewish life-story. -

From Other People’s Houses into Shakespeare’s Kitchen: The Story of Lore Segal and How She Looked for Adventures and Where She Found Them Julia K. Baker In examining Lore Segal’s novels Other People’s Houses (1964), Her First American (1985), the children’s book The Story of Old Mrs. Brubeck and How She Looked for Trouble and Where She Found Him (1981), and the short stories in Shakespeare’s Kitchen (Pulitzer Finalist in 2007), this paper highlights the interplay of fictional and autobiographical elements in the creative act of writing about disastrous events and emotions, such as war, fear, separation, death, loneliness, and exile. The article outlines the effects of a war-time childhood on the literary depiction of relationships. No man, unless he puts on the mask of fiction, can show his real face or the will behind it. For this reason, the only real biographies are the novels, and every novel, if it is honest will be the autobiography of the author and the biography of the reader.1 Children have their own tricks for handling fear: my grandson has tigers on his mind, so he turns into a tiger. I turned my own childhood disasters into adventures.2 Lore Segal’s childhood disasters – her escape from Vienna in 1938 as a ten-year-old, the separation from her parents, and living in four different English foster homes – inspired her to write her first novel, Other People’s Houses (1964). Born Lore Groszmann in Vienna in 1928, the author escaped the Nazis with five hundred other Jewish children on the first Kindertransport train that departed Vienna in December 1938. -

Contributors’ Notes Mark K. Anderson is a journalist and author of Shakespeare by Another Name (Gotham Books, 2005) and The Day the World Discovered the Sun (Da Capo, 2012). He’s written for many publications, including Wired, Harper’s, Science, Rolling Stone, Scientific American, and Technology Review, and has been a regular contributor to WNYC’s Studio 30 with Kurt Andersen. Anders Carlson-Wee is a 2015 NEA Fellow and the winner of Ninth Letter’s 2014 Poetry Award and of New Delta Review’s 2014 Editors’ Choice Prize. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in Southern Review, Prairie Schooner, West Branch, Forklift Ohio, Best New Poets 2012 and 2014, and elsewhere. A recipient of scholarships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, and of the Bread Loaf Bakeless Camargo Residency Fellowship, he is currently an MFA candidate at Vanderbilt University. Jennifer Chang is the author of The History of Anonymity (VQR Poetry Series, 2008). She co-chairs the advisory board of Kundiman and is an assistant professor of English and creative writing at George Washington University. She lives in Washington, DC. Lorraine Hanlon Comanor was the 1963 US Figure Skating Champion and member of the US Figure Skating Team. She graduated from Harvard University and Stanford Medical School, completed her residency at both universities, and is a board-certified anesthesiologist. Following twenty-five years in the operating room, she became a medical writer and a research consultant to numerous pharmaceutical companies. More recently, she received her MFA in fiction from the Bennington Writing Seminars.
