    Cultural Translation and Creative Misunderstanding in the Art of Wenda Gu David Cateforis One of the major Chinese-born avant-garde artists of his generation, Wenda Gu (b. Shanghai, 1955) began his career as part of the ’85 Movement in China, relocated to the United States in 1987, and achieved international renown in the 1990s.1 Since the late 1990s Gu has spent increasing amounts of time back in China participating in that country’s booming contemporary art scene; he now largely divides his time between Brooklyn and Shanghai. This transnational experience has led Gu to create numerous art works dealing with East–West interchange. This paper introduces and briefly analyzes two of his recent projects, Forest of Stone Steles—Retranslation and Rewriting of Tang Poetry (1993–2005), and Cultural Transference—A Neon Calligraphy Series (2004–7), both of which explore creatively certain problems and paradoxes of attempts to translate between Chinese and English languages and cultures. A full understanding of these projects requires some knowledge of the work that first gained Gu international recognition, his united nations series of installations, begun in 1993.2 The series consists of a sequence of what Gu calls “monuments,” made principally of human hair fash- ioned into such elements as bricks, carpets, and curtains, and combined to create large quasi-architectural installations. Comprising national mon- uments made from hair collected within a single country and installed there, and transnational or “universal” monuments made of hair collected from around the world, Gu’s series uses blended human hair to suggest the utopian possibility of human unification through biological merger.

    The Very Beginning (written with great honor by cousin Basilio Chen 鄭/郑华树) The Roots Chang Kee traces his family roots as the 87th descendant of Duke Huan of Zheng (鄭桓公), thus posthumorously, Dr. Holt Cheng is referred to in the ancient family genealogical tradition Duke Holt Cheng, descendant of the royal family Zhou (周) from the Western Zhou Dynasty. The roots and family history of Chang Kee starts over 2,800 years ago in the Zhou Dynasty (周朝) when King Xuan (周宣王, 841 BC - 781 BC), the eleventh King of the Zhou Dynasty, made his younger brother Ji You (姬友, 806 BC-771 BC) the Duke of Zheng, establishing what would be the last bastion of Western Zhou (西周朝) and at the same time establishing the first person to adopt the surname Zheng (also Romanized as Cheng in Wades-Giles Dictionary of Pronunciation). The surname Zheng (鄭) which means "serious" or " solemn", is also unique in that is the only few surname that also has a City-State name associated it, Zhengzhou city (鄭國 or鄭州in modern times). Thus, the State of Zheng (鄭國) was officially established by the first Zheng (鄭,) Duke Huan of Zheng (鄭桓公), in 806 BC as a city-state in the middle of ancient China, modern Henan Province. Its ruling house had the surname Ji (姬), making them a branch of the Zhou royal house, and were given the rank of bo (伯,爵), corresponding roughly to an earl. Later, this branch adopted officially the surname Zheng (鄭) and thus Ji You (or Earl Ji You, as it would refer to in royal title) was known posthumously as Duke Huan of Zheng (鄭桓公) becoming the first person to adopt the family surname of Zheng (鄭), Chang Kee’s family name in Chinese.

First, essential to the new problematic is the question of China’s place in the world and its relationship to the past, which found expression most concretely in problems created by the new national consciousness. Second, national consciousness raised questions about social relationships, ultimately at the level of the relationship between the individual and society, which were to provide the framework for, and in some ways also contained, the redefinition of even existential questions.

In order to answer the following three questions “ whether the current tea culture phenomena can be called “tradition” or not; what are the changes in tea cultural tradition and what are the new features of the current trend of tea culture; what are the endogenous and exogenous factors which influenced the change in the tea drinking tradition”, I did literature research from ancient tea classics and historical documents to summarize the development history of Chinese tea culture, and used two month to do fieldwork on teahouses in Xi’an so that I could have a clear understanding on the current trend of tea culture. It is found that the current tea culture is inherited from tradition and changed with social development. Tea drinking traditions have become more and more popular with diverse forms.

    OPEN • SET 2020 Design Binding Today OPEN • SET is a competition and exhibition, a triennial event featuring finely crafted design bindings. The title reflects the two categories in which the bookbinders compete—the Open Category, wherein the binder chooses which textblock to bind, and the Set Category, in which participants bind the same textblock. The Open Category titles are books in French, German, Spanish and English, a variety that echoes the number of foreign entries in the show. The Set Category book was conceived and printed by fine press printer Russell Maret; he selected the text of a letter by William Blake entitled Happy Abstract. There are notable highlights in this show, as there are First, Second and Third Prize awards in each category, as well as twenty Highly Commendable designations. These were awarded by a jury of the well-known American binders Monique Lallier, Mark Esser and Patricia Owen. Each juror has a binding on display. And there is so much more! Take note of the variety of structures and different materials used. When a binder first sits with a textblock, they spend time reading and absorbing the meaning of the content, examining the typography, the layout and page margins, taking note of the mood and color of the illustrations. Ideas form. A binding requires that the design come from deep within, and is then executed into visual play that exemplifies the interpretation. This is with all respect to the author, illustrator, and publisher. The result is an invitation into the text, the words and their meaning. The result is unique, a work of art in the form of a book.

    Maria Khayutina [email protected] The Tombs of Peng State and Related Questions Paper for the Chicago Bronze Workshop, November 3-7, 2010 (, 1.1.) () The discovery of the Western Zhou period’s Peng State in Heng River Valley in the south of Shanxi Province represents one of the most fascinating archaeological events of the last decade. Ruled by a lineage of Kui (Gui ) surname, Peng, supposedly, was founded by descendants of a group that, to a certain degree, retained autonomy from the Huaxia cultural and political community, dominated by lineages of Zi , Ji and Jiang surnames. Considering Peng’s location right to the south of one of the major Ji states, Jin , and quite close to the eastern residence of Zhou kings, Chengzhou , its case can be very instructive with regard to the construction of the geo-political and cultural space in Early China during the Western Zhou period. Although the publication of the full excavations’ report may take years, some preliminary observations can be made already now based on simplified archaeological reports about the tombs of Peng ruler Cheng and his spouse née Ji of Bi . In the present paper, I briefly introduce the tombs inventory and the inscriptions on the bronzes, and then proceed to discuss the following questions: - How the tombs M1 and M2 at Hengbei can be dated? - What does the equipment of the Hengbei tombs suggest about the cultural roots of Peng? - What can be observed about Peng’s relations to the Gui people and to other Kui/Gui- surnamed lineages? 1. This paper birefly introduces a Chinese digital input method named as CKCDIM (CKC Digital Input Method) and then applies it to the Symbian OS as an example, and it also proposes a framework of input method which adopted the Client/Server architecture for the handheld computers. To improve the performance of CKCDIM, this paper puts forward a dynamic and self-study language model which based on a general language model and user language model, and proposes two indexes which are the average number of pressed-keys (ANPK) and the hit rate of first characters (HRFC) to measure the performance of the input method. Meanwhile, this paper brings forward a modified Church-Gale smoothing method to reduce the size of general language model to meet the need of mobile phone. At last, the experiments prove that the dynamic and self-study language model is a steady model and can improve the performance of CKCDIM. However, Japanese and Chinese simplifications frequently differed, resulting in the existence of multiple forms of the same character being used in different places. This study investigates the differences between the Japanese and Chinese simplifications and the effects of the simplification techniques implemented by each side. The more conservative Japanese simplifications were achieved by instating simpler historical character variants while the more radical Chinese simplifications were achieved primarily through the use of whole cursive script forms and phonetic simplification techniques. These techniques, however, have been criticized for their detrimental effects on character recognition, semantic and phonetic clarity, and consistency – issues less present with the Japanese approach. By comparing the Japanese and Chinese simplification techniques, this study seeks to determine the characteristics of more effective, less controversial Chinese character simplifications.
