Our Artist Educators will guide the audience through The Taming of the Shrew as they bring Shakespeare’s famous characters to life in this comical two-person performance. Students will have the opportunity for discussion and synthesis of their theatre experience throughout the performance. Climax- The point of highest dramatic tension or a major turning point in the action of a play. Conflict- The opposition of persons, forces, or ideas that gives rise to the dramatic action. Costumes- The clothing worn by the actors to play the characters. Dialogue- The words spoken by the actors during a play. Empathy- The capacity to relate to the feelings of another. Exposition- The part of a play that introduces the theme, main characters and circumstances. Falling Action- The action after the climax of the plot. Interpretation- To explain or tell the meaning of something; to present in understandable terms. Monologue- A speech made by a single character; often when a character is “thinking out loud.” Motivation- An incentive or an inducement for further action for a character.

The characters and plot will remain unaffected. SHAKESPEARE (1564-1616) William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England in 1564. His parents were quite rich and he attended a grammar school where he studied Greek and Latin. He married Anne Hathaway in 1582. Shakespeare then moved to London to become a playwright and actor with the successful theatre company The Lord Chamberlain's Men. The company would later change its name to The King's Men in 1603. Shakespeare remained with the company until he retired in 1610. Shakespeare's earliest plays date from 1590 and by 1597 he was sufficiently rich to buy the second largest house in Stratford. The following year he became a partner in the new Globe Theatre, London. He wrote 37 plays in total and 154 sonnets (lyrical poems of 14 lines). His plays are catagorised into three genres; comedy, tragedy and history plays. The comedy, 'The Taming Of The Shrew', was one of Shakespeare's earliest plays (written in 1590) with his last play ('The Tempest') being written in 1611, after which he retired to Stratford, where he died in 1616, aged 52.

Though he played roles which ranged from Narcisse and the Corsican twins to Jekyll and Hyde, he was perhaps most closely identified with a handful of Shakespearean roles: Hamlet, Shylock, Macbeth, Othello, Iago. His apparently ungovernable temper led to a love/hate relationship with the critics, played out in public through the newspapers. His responses to criticism open a window into his playing of these roles. This paper examines Bandmann’s acting in the role of Hamlet and the critical interchanges he engaged in around the world, in which he defended his playing of the role. Author Lisa Warrington is an Associate Professor in Theatre Studies at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. Current research interests (and areas in which she has published) include Shakespeare in performance, directing, Pasifika theatre, site-specific theatre, nineteenth century New Zealand theatre history and the theatre of Aotearoa/New Zealand. She is also a professional theatre director, with many productions to her credit. It focuses on Katherine, a “shrew” who needs to get married so that her younger sister, Bianca, can get married. While she comes from a wealthy family, Katherine is not the typical wife men seek; her sister Bianca has many suitors, and they convince another man, Petruchio, to marry Katherine. After they marry, Katherine gives a long, uncharacteristic retraction speech honoring her husband and preaching why women should be submissive.

    Thematic Chauvinism: A Common Element The American Western film is the gun toting, womanizing, Indian-hunting shoot'em up tribute to everything masculine in the conservative tradition of the United States’ media. Revolving around the idea that the Western frontier can be “won” using a dangerous combination of horseback riding, brown liquor, and saloon girls, the genre has taken any overblown, stereotypical notion of a “real man” and applied it to the only situation in which such a creature could survive - a fictional sort. The Western cowboy is in his element when surrounded by vapid, squawking women, saddled horses, and impending conflicts with hostile “savages,” but John Wayne’s “Mclintock!” somehow muster the stamina to argue convincingly for the possibility of the same stereotypical manhood even within a family of “shrews.” Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” Wayne’s film stars Maureen O’Hara as the fiery Kate while implicating her daughter, Becky, in the would-be role of Bianca Minola in the original play from the late 1500s. In a twist on the relational dynamics of Shakespeare’s comedy, John Wayne’s character George Washington (G.W.) Mclintock, a modern day Petruccio, is already married to Kate. The tension of the film becomes apparent as G.W. is forced to address Kate’s want of a divorce while at the same time dousing the sparking hints of a shrew in the actions of his daughter, whose return to the town occasions the return of Kate from her new home back East.
