But for those who are up to the challenge, there are several trails that also lead to the top, the most common route being Platteklip Gorge Hiking Trail. Several groups offer caving and rock climbing, and for those seeking a quicker and more thrilling descent, abseiling.

Signal Hill, Lion’s Head and the Gun derives its name from the days when a communication post on the side of the hill was used to send signals to ships in the harbour. The daily noon gun, accurate to the nearest millisecond, booms over the Mother City, and never ceases to surprise even long-term Capetonians, and certainly has visitors looking anxious. The canon has been fired everyday except Sunday, since 1902. The firing is carried out with military precision by the South African Astronomical Observatory who take such things quite seriously. An electric cartridge is loaded into the cannon which is then triggered remotely by the Observatory's master .
