The present geological period has more species than any other, yet the current rate of extinction of species is greater now than at any time in the past. Ecosystems and communities are being degraded and destroyed, and species are being driven to extinction. The species that persist are losing genetic variation as the number of individuals in populations shrinks, unique populations and subspecies are destroyed, and remaining populations become increasingly isolated from one another. The cause of this loss of biological diversity at all levels is the range of human activity that alters and destroys natural habitats to suit human needs.” (Primack, 2002). CapeNature launched its State of Biodiversity Programme (SoBP) to assess and monitor the state of biodiversity in the Western Cape in 1999. This programme delivered its first report in 2002 and these reports are updated every five years. The current report (2007) reports on the changes to the state of vertebrate biodiversity and land under conservation usage.

  • Rainy Day in Cape Town!
Parker Cottage’s Suggestions for a Rainy Day in Cape Town! Yes, it’s true. It even rains in Cape Town! When it does, there are actually quite a few fun things you can do. No need to bury your head under the duvet and hibernate: get out there! Parker Cottage Tel +27 (21)424-6445 | Fax +27 (0)21 424-0195 | Cell +27 (0)79 980 1113 1 & 3 Carstens Street, Tamboerskloof, Cape Town, South Africa [email protected] | www.parkercottage.co.za The Two Oceans Aquarium … Whilst it’s not enormous, our aquarium is one of the nicest ones I’ve ever visited because of the interesting way it’s laid out. There is a shark tank, pressurized tanks for ultra-deep sea creatures and also a kelp forest tank (my favourite) complete with wave machine where you can watch the fish swimming inside an underwater forest. Check out the daily penguin and shark-tank feedings to see our beautiful creatures in hungry action, or visit the touch-pool for an interactive experience. The staff are also really fun and the place is well maintained and clean. Dig deep to find your inner child and you’ll enjoy. Open every day from 09h30 – 18h00. Shark feedings on Sundays at 15h00, and penguin feedings daily at 11h45 and 14h30. • Wine LIST Our Story
A TASTE OF THE WILD Wine LIST Our Story REWILDING THE LOST WILDERNESS The Garden Route Game Lodge is the realisation of a dream come true for owners, the Doherty and Apteker families. Started in 1999, Garden Route Game Lodge became the first private game reserve in the Western Cape and Garden Route region to offer big game viewing safaris. The game reserve started as an ambitious project to restore an area of old farm land and stock it with wildlife that previously occurred here. Over the years, the reserve has expanded by incorporating neighbouring farm lands and in doing so creating much needed habitat for wildlife. From humble beginnings Garden Route Game Lodge now provides employment for many families in the local community and has become a favourite Safari destination among local and foreign travellers. We welcome you to our restaurant, Serengeti’s from the Maasai word meaning “open spaces”, where our food philosophy is to use seasonal produce from our own farm or from nearby farmers. Natural, fresh ingredients are sourced and creatively combined with Cape flavours and herbs of indigenous Fynbos to create nourishing, healthy, delicious, home style comfort-food. Our wine list is a careful selection to showcase the best of South African wines, handpicked by our Executive Chef Ronel Breytenbach and Bar Manager Madré du Plessis, to be enjoyed with the type of food we love to serve. We offer ample by the glass choices to allow you to sample more than one wine. Whether you are new to wine drinking or a serious oenophile - a connoisseur of wines -, our wine list offers something for every palate and occasion, from easy drinking wines to be enjoyed on its own to the more complex.

  • Activism in Manenberg, 1980 to 2010
Then and Now: Activism in Manenberg, 1980 to 2010 Julian A Jacobs (8805469) University of the Western Cape Supervisor: Prof Uma Dhupelia-Mesthrie Masters Research Essay in partial fulfillment of Masters of Arts Degree in History November 2010 DECLARATION I declare that „Then and Now: Activism in Manenberg, 1980 to 2010‟ is my own work and that all the sources I have used or quoted have been indicated and acknowledged by means of complete references. …………………………………… Julian Anthony Jacobs i ABSTRACT This is a study of activists from Manenberg, a township on the Cape Flats, Cape Town, South Africa and how they went about bringing change. It seeks to answer the question, how has activism changed in post-apartheid Manenberg as compared to the 1980s? The study analysed the politics of resistance in Manenberg placing it within the over arching mass defiance campaign in Greater Cape Town at the time and comparing the strategies used to mobilize residents in Manenberg in the 1980s to strategies used in the period of the 2000s. The thesis also focused on several key figures in Manenberg with a view to understanding what local conditions inspired them to activism. The use of biographies brought about a synoptic view into activists lives, their living conditions, their experiences of the apartheid regime, their brutal experience of apartheid and their resistance and strength against a system that was prepared to keep people on the outside. This study found that local living conditions motivated activism and became grounds for mobilising residents to make Manenberg a site of resistance. It was easy to mobilise residents on issues around rent increases, lack of resources, infrastructure and proper housing.
