It was a moon lit night when the twenty good looking young chaps collected at the Suikerbossie Restaurant, Hailey’s Comet was over head and that was before the wine was flowing. None of us really realised what a Charter was but the Mother Club members all suitably attired with badges were quick to explain the importance of the evening. There had been some concern from the “Mother Hen” group in earlier weeks about how seriously the Hout Bay potential Rotarians behaved. All of us were learning about “attendance” and making up, that one took some understanding as it had such close marital connections. Then there was the seniority of the club members, a President did seem just a little pedantic, and then the Sgt and his amusing role of extracting fines and forever beating a bell. Those early days we all took roles in turn and that included providing the wine for the raffle we always had. So back to that “special night” our evening was “chaired” by the District Governor, Dick Friedlander, and yet another lesson we had learnt that this top role in our District was like our Club just for the year so we also learnt about PDG’s, and PP, and Anns. But the evening progressed with interludes between each course filled with speeches explaining why Hout Bay was joining the Rotary Family, what the expectations were and continual reference to the wonderful fun we would have. Then came a highlight as WE the new Rotarians and the foundation members of the Hout Bay Club were asked to stand and were inducted en-masse. This was followed with the appointment of the President, Theo Vith, who sadly passed away last year, the Treasurer, Brent Adams who now lives in Australia and Don Peters as Secretary who I need say nothing about. We as a Club in formation had selected the Hout Bay Manor Hotel as the venue for our meetings. So the induction completed the District Governor proceeded in presenting to the Club and received by President Theo Vith the Charter followed by many telegrams and letters congratulating the Hout Bay Club on joining the Rotary family. The evening was happy for us all and we were presented with our Rotary badges.

I hope this short piece helps to identify the start of a Rotary Club that has earned and received from its District and from many contacts with Rotary International and numerous visiting Rotarians great praise for the contributions made particularly in those areas where there are many less fortunate and where WE have shown and practiced the Rotary motto – Service above self – VIVA HOUT BAY ROTARY VIVA

Our Club Services Director, Carolyn, arranged a Murder Mystery Zoom party on 23 February to celebrate RCHB's 35th Anniversary. The scene was the Malachai Stout's Family Reunion in which eight members of a largely dysfunctional family gathered at their ancestral home for a reunion hosted by the elderly patriarch Malachai Stout. Our members each played one of eight characters or an Investigator and were tasked with figuring out "who dunnit"! A hugely fun evening was had by all – Thanks Carolyn !

Adele Hayden (Penelope Clarington) and Investigator Candida Andrade figured it out. Grandma Winifred Stout (Dianne Barclay) stole the jewels and murdered her husband – Malachai Stout. Family members of the deceased can track and trace the graves and information of their relatives using the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website - www.cwgc.org. The website is extensive and includes information on finding records, volunteering with CWGC as well as a wealth of info on their . The amount of work and dedication which must have gone into the collaboration of all this information is phenomenal. Bearing in mind that both these wars took place long before computerised information was available or accessible.

Jeremy invited Rotary members to contact him directly if they would like to receive a photograph of deceased loved ones’ graves. Following a suggestion from Rotarian Colin Sutherland, we have decided to introduce “Spotlight on Rotarians” as a regular feature. This will allow ALL who receive Bay Breezes to become more familiar with each other as well as our members. Our plan is to expand it beyond RCHB members to include DG/AG or others who we are partnering with.
