Swanson Sr., Resident Bishop WELCOME TO ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2019! If this is your first time attending Annual Conference please know you are in for a wonderful time of worship, decision making about the budgetary needs for mission and ministry of the Mississippi Annual Conference, sharing of glory sightings, God’s movement among us, opportunities to be actively involved in missions work, fellowship and developing new friends. This year’s theme is “The POWER that makes us One.” We will celebrate our annual coming together with opening worship and the sharing of the Holy Eucharist together. You will witness the class of 2019 new ordinands, associate pastors and the local pastors receiving their licenses. I personally want to welcome Dr. Jessica Moffatt to the Mississippi Annual Conference. She will be our preacher for opening worship and our service of ordination. Dr. Claire Sterk, President of Emory University, will be the speaker for the Laity Luncheon. Rev. Dr. Embra Jackson will be the preacher for the Service of Remembrance. We will be electing General and Jurisdictional Delegates to the 2020 General and Jurisdictional Conferences, as well. I look forward to seeing y’all there. Blessings, BISHOP JAMES E. SWANSON, SR. ANDY STODDARD, ANNUAL CONFERENCE CHAIR Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, It’s time once again for the People Known as Methodists to once again gather together for our Annual Conference. What a joy it is for us to once again come together in Jackson for worship, for service, for the ordering of our life together, and most of all give glory to our Triune God of Grace for the great things that have happened since we have gather last. I know we’ve done it from the very beginning, but I think of the word that we sing in a matter of weeks, And Are We Yet Alive? Verses three and four especially resonate with me: What troubles have we seen, what mighty conflicts past, fightings without, and fears within, since we assembled last! Yet out of all the Lord hath brought us by his love; and still he doth his help afford, and hides our life above. This past year has not been perfect. There has been pain within our greater connection, our local connection, and within our local bodies. But even in the midst of the pain, the “fightings without, and fears within” God remains good. God remains Lord and Jesus Christ remains the hope for the word. It is under the shadow of the cross we come together, and it is in the hope of the resurrection that give us our strength. We come together this year with The POWER that Make Us One. This power is not our power, but is the power of Almighty God. Alone, we are not one. We all know that. But alone, we cannot become one. We can only become one through that divine, supernatural power. We can only become by and through the power of the Holy Spirit. That is my prayer for this session of the Mississippi Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church: that we are one, through that Power. But the grace of the Lord, may it be so!     Methodist History, 31:3 (April 1993) FROM MISSION TO ANNUAL CONFERENCE: THE WORK OF THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, SOUTH, IN CHINA, 1848-1886 MELVILLE 0. WILLIAMS, JR. Background of Foreign Missions in the M.E.C.S. John Wesley's combination of the warmed heart and the world parish gave to the churches following him a great motivation for world mission. This motivation had to survive the traumatic split in the Methodist Episco­ pal Church in 1844 over the slavery issue, the southern section becoming the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (M.E.C.S.). In the division of work and responsibility, the M.E.C.S. was left with missions to Native Americans, slaves, German -speaking Americans and to the poor. These constituted a large home mission field. There were no foreign missions. This lack greatly distressed many in the southern church. Their thoughts and concerns were best set forth by Dr. William M. Wightman, Editor of the Southern Christian Advocate, Charleston, S.C., in a ringing editorial in that paper, September 5, 1845, "A Mission to China." He wrote of the need and the opportunity-five treaty ports had just been opened to foreigners- and he called for action, including mission volunteers. Many readers were deeply moved, but none more so than was Benjamin Jenkins, a well-educated printer who was setting the type for the editorial. He knew he was called to service in China. He offered himself and was ready to go as opportunity developed. 1 The other volunteer was Charles Taylor, M.D., of New York state, a graduate of New York University, with additional medical studies in Philadelphia, where he received his medical degree.

His son, Walter Russell Lambuth, was a Methodist missionary to Japan, Korea, and the Belgian Congo from the Mississippi Conference, General Conference Missionary Secretary, and was later elected Bishop. The Lambuths established schools in Japan and had four generations of Methodist missionaries on foreign soil. David Campbell Kelley was a Methodist missionary to China from the Tennessee Conference. W.R. Lambuth married the daughter of D.C. Kelley, Daisy Kelley Lambuth.     Walter Russell Lambuth Scholarship Fund Program Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry of The United Methodist Church UNDERGRADUATE STUDY SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION Dear Pastor, We are excited to announce the creation of a new scholarship fund in memory of Bishop Walter Russell Lambuth. This fund was created by the United Methodist Foundation of the Memphis and Tennessee Conferences after the closing of Lambuth University. This scholarship will be administered by each conference’s Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry. The endowment has provided a minimum of $5,000 to be awarded for the 2015 academic year. The minimum criteria are as follows: 1. Applicant must be a member of a United Methodist Church in the Memphis or Tennessee Conference for a minimum of 2 years immediately prior to applying for this award. 2. Applicant must complete the application from the Conference Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry in the conference in which their church is located. 3. Applicant must be (or be accepted as) a full-time student (12 or more credit hours) in a United Methodist related college or university. 4. Applicant must have a minimum score of 21 on the ACT and a high school or college/university GPA of 3.0. (Copy of the ACT and transcripts should accompany the application.) 5. The scholarship must be used during 1 academic year and the applicant can apply for renewal through this scholarship application process each year. If you have a member of your congregation who would qualify for the scholarship, please have them complete the enclosed application.

The Directory of Religious Bodies includes all denominations recognized by the Federal Census. The Directory of Inter- church Bodies contains three times the number of organizations formerly treated. Most of these bodies publish Year Books with other data of value. Part II, General Information, is largely given to information connected with the war. The directories and statistics are official. The statistics con- cerning Churches and Sunday Schools are reprinted from the United States Census Bureau findings and are offered in com- parison with the Census of religious bodies made by the Federal Bureau of the Census ten years ago. The treatment of the cooperation of the Churches and Inter- Church Bodies officially in the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America, is especially significant because the war has increased the necessity of federating religious activities. Books of value in nearly every phase of Christian work, published by the Federal Council, are listed as a bibliography. The general arrangement will be the same in future volumes as in this one, but it is expected that additional material will be offered in successive issues. Each division of the book is preceded by a table of the material treated, which, with the table of contents of the book and the complete cross index, will enable the reader to find every topic readily.
