  • And the Methodist Ethos Beyond John Wesley
The Arbury Journal 63/1:5-31 © 2008 Asbury Theological Seminary TED A. CAMPBELL The {(Wqy if Salvation" and the Methodist Ethos Bryond John Weslry: A Stucfy in Formal Consensus and Popular Receptzon Abstract It has been well documented that the "way of salvation" was central to John Wesley's thought. But how did Methodists in the nineteenth century express a theology and spirituality of the way of salvation? This article examines formal doctrinal materials from Methodist churches (including catechisms, doctrinal statements, and hymnals) and the testimonies of l'vfethodist men and women to discern how teachings about the way of salvation were transmitted after the time of John and Charles Wesley. Based on these doctrinal works and personal testimonies, the article shows a consistent pattern in Methodist teaching and experience involving a) conviction of sin, b) conversion, c) struggles of the soul following conversion, and then d) entire sanctification. I<.EYWORDs: conversion, salvation, John Wesley, Methodist Ted A. Campbell is associate professor of church history at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. 1. Introduction and Background We find ourselves now at a critical juncture in the fields of Wesleyan and Methodist studies. On the one hand, something that Methodist historians and interpreters have long desired is at last coming to pass, namely, widespread recognition of the prominent cultural influence of Methodism in the USA and its influence on the broader Evangelical movement. Beginning with Nathan Hatch's study of The Democratization of American Religion (1989), a series of historical studies have explored the cultural impact of the Methodist movement in the nineteenth century and beyond.l John H.

  • The Work of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in China, 1848-1886
Methodist History, 31:3 (April 1993) FROM MISSION TO ANNUAL CONFERENCE: THE WORK OF THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, SOUTH, IN CHINA, 1848-1886 MELVILLE 0. WILLIAMS, JR. Background of Foreign Missions in the M.E.C.S. John Wesley's combination of the warmed heart and the world parish gave to the churches following him a great motivation for world mission. This motivation had to survive the traumatic split in the Methodist Episco pal Church in 1844 over the slavery issue, the southern section becoming the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (M.E.C.S.). In the division of work and responsibility, the M.E.C.S. was left with missions to Native Americans, slaves, German -speaking Americans and to the poor. These constituted a large home mission field. There were no foreign missions. This lack greatly distressed many in the southern church. Their thoughts and concerns were best set forth by Dr. William M. Wightman, Editor of the Southern Christian Advocate, Charleston, S.C., in a ringing editorial in that paper, September 5, 1845, "A Mission to China." He wrote of the need and the opportunity-five treaty ports had just been opened to foreigners- and he called for action, including mission volunteers. Many readers were deeply moved, but none more so than was Benjamin Jenkins, a well-educated printer who was setting the type for the editorial. He knew he was called to service in China. He offered himself and was ready to go as opportunity developed. 1 The other volunteer was Charles Taylor, M.D., of New York state, a graduate of New York University, with additional medical studies in Philadelphia, where he received his medical degree.

  • “And Are WE YET Alive?”: Methodism in Great Britain, 1945-2010 Since the Days of John Wesley British Methodism Has Collec
Methodist History, 51:1 & 2 (October 2012 & January 2013) “AND ARE WE YET ALIVE?”: METHODISM IN GREAT BRITAIN, 1945-2010 MARTIN WELLINGS Since the days of John Wesley British Methodism has collected, tabu- lated, analyzed and worried over statistics. In the nineteenth century, fig- ures for Methodist membership became a source of pride in the hands of denominational leaders like Hugh Price Hughes and of disbelief to liberal academics like Mark Pattison, Rector of Lincoln College, Oxford.1 More than a decade of unprecedented numerical decline in the years around the First World War caused alarm, perplexity and soul-searching in Wesleyan ranks.2 In the second half of the twentieth century, however, such depress- ing statistics became commonplace, and the triennial returns for 1992-95 reported not only a decline of 8.2% over three years (a drop in membership of 28,000) but an accelerating rate of loss, year on year.3 This prompted the secular media to publish stories about the “meltdown” of Methodism in Great Britain, while some scholars predicted that the Methodist Church would be extinct by 2035.4 Although reports of the death of Methodism in Great Britain have been much exaggerated, it is undeniable that the hopes associated with Methodist reunion in 1932 and with post-war reconstruction after 1945 have not been realized. The second half of the twentieth century was undoubtedly a dif- ficult time for British Methodism, prompting one researcher of the period to borrow and amend the first phrase of a Wesley hymn, to give the title “See how great a flameexpires .”5 Debate continues within the British Connexion over how best to reshape the Church for a new society, and indeed over whether Methodism has fulfilled its mission and should cease to exist, or 1 David Hempton, Methodism: Empire of the Spirit (New Haven: Yale UP, 2005), 1; compare Dorothea Price Hughes, The Life of Hugh Price Hughes (London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1904), 161-162.
