HIV stigma exists in community and social institutions including health institution. Most student nurses who enter into health- training institutions are members of the society and might exhibit stigma towards HIV-infected persons which could be due to poor knowledge about HIV. This study investigated the HIV stigma mechanism of student nurses as well as their knowledge about HIV across a state in Southwestern Nigeria. -

Recent scholarship on modern religious history has sought to relocate Britain‟s „secularization moment‟ from the industrialization of the nineteenth century to the social and cultural upheavals of the 1960s. My thesis seeks to add to this debate by examining the way in which the established Church and Christian doctrine continued to play a central role in the politics of the 1980s. More specifically it analyses the conflict between the Conservative party and the once labelled „Tory party at Prayer‟, the Church of England. Both Church and state during this period were at loggerheads, projecting contrasting visions of the Christian underpinnings of the nation‟s political values. The first part of this thesis addresses the established Church. -

VAN NIEKERK JANUARY 2009 THE IMPACT OF LIBERATION THEOLOGY ON METHODISM IN SOUTH AFRICA WITH REGARD TO THE DOCTRINE OF CHRISTIAN PERFECTION: (Summary ) There is potential for a schism, within the Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA) today, between Fundamentalist and Liberationist Methodists, who struggle to find common identity and vision. A question that needs examination is whether it is possible to develop an authentically, uniting Southern African Methodist Theology within the current Institutional structure of the MCSA. For this to become possible, some key areas of discussion are highlighted in this paper, such as the training of ministers and the MCSA as Institution. This paper attempts to enter into conversation between Fundamental and Liberation Methodism using the Doctrine of Christian Perfection, ' the Grand Depositum ' of Methodism, as a point of reference and develop an epistemological framework based on Wesley’s 'quadrilateral' of Scripture, reason, experience and tradition. Meanwhile, the generation of black and white social workers and activists who flocked to Notting Hill after the riots have largely been left out of the history of the British left. This article treats Notting Hill after 1958 as an important locale of new progressive thinking and action. It seeks to consider the political work that the idea of “community” did in Notting Hill, allowing us consider how the politics of anti-racism relates in complex ways to the reformulation of progressive politics in postwar Britain. It reveals how black activists came to reappropriate the language of “community” to critique the ameliorative, welfarist approach to anti-racism. It also unearths the forgotten eclectic beginnings of Britain's New Left. By excavating the history of community work and New Left activism “from below,” this article traces the ways in which a motley group of Methodist ministers, Christian Workers, students, social workers, and community leaders tested the limits of liberal paternalism and the “universalism” of the postwar social democratic state. -

The Methodist churches in London Aims and approach This document is designed for those who wish to explore an aspect of the religious heritage of the Methodist churches in London, in particular the history of an individual church. It will explain ways of finding out more about important aspects of the history of a Methodist church, and also wider London Methodism, in the nineteenth and twentieth century. Background: Methodist churches in London (The information in this section is taken largely from the Dictionary of Methodism, which is available online at www.wesleyhistoricalsociety.org.uk/dmbi/ ). London has strong links with John Wesley, the eighteenth century founder of Methodism. The first Methodist society was based in London at the Foundery in Moorfields. Here there was a preaching house (holding 1,500), living quarters, stables for preacher’s horses, a schoolroom and a book room. In 1778 Wesley moved his headquarters to City Road Chapel. In the eighteenth century there were also centres for Methodism at West Street Chapel in the West End, Snowfields Chapel, Southwark and in Spitalfields. Early London Methodism grew comparatively slowly, with the single London Circuit only divided from 1807. However, like other denominations, the Methodists responded to the rapid growth of London through programmes of church extension. In 1861 the Metropolitan Chapel Building Fund was established to ‘promote the erection of commodious chapels in suitable situations in and around the metropolis, to assist in the enlargement of existing chapels…and to secure eligible sites, especially in the new localities’. This work was complimented by the work of the East End Mission from 1885, which began in 1861 under the leadership of Alexander M’Aulay and went on two carve out five new circuits in the East End, and the West London Movement (1887).
