A Cultural-Translation Study of Paratexts Via Victor H. Mair's
Compilation and Translation Review Vol. 11, No. 2 ( September 2018 ), 61 - 98 A Cultural-Translation Study of Paratexts via Victor H. Mair’s English Translation of the Tao Te Ching Chih-hong Rudy Chen This paper looks at the authoritative sinologist and philologist Victor H. Mair’s English translation of the Tao Te Ching. It examines Mair’s use of paratexts to support his cross-cultural transfer of such highly Chinese-culture-bound religious and philosophical terms as Tao, Te and Ching from the Chinese source text into English. More specifically, it looks at Mair’s interpretative assumptions as well as methodologies. This brings into play several relevant issues with regard to the role of cultural translation within the wider field of translation studies. Firstly, the paper explores Kwame Anthony Appiah’s “thick translation” approach, and such cross-cultural linguistic practices as the use of annotations and of other forms of scholarly paratexts, in order that (in Appiah’s words) an “academic’ translation” is produced. Secondly, selected elements of these paratexts are examined in the light of André Lefevere’s notion of ideology and Lawrence Venuti’s notions of foreignization and visibility, to help us better understand the external factors requiring Mair’s careful considerations in the “transaction” of meaning across languages and cultures. This cultural translation study on Mair’s translation of the Tao Te Ching with extensive preface, annotations and back matter seeks to shed light, then, on the depth and complexity of the art of cultural-translation, itself so vital to cross-cultural understanding. Located at China’s western frontier, the ancient city of Dunhuang lay at the convergence of the northern and southern routes of the Silk Road—a crossroads of the civilizations of East Asia, Central Asia, and the Western world. From the late fourth century until the decline of the Silk Road in the fourteenth century, Dunhuang was a bustling desert oasis—a center of trade and pilgrimage. The original “melting pot” of China, it was a gateway for new forms of art, culture, and religions. The nearly 500 caves found there tell an almost seamless chronological tale of their history, preserving the stories of religious devotion throughout various dynasties. During the height of World War II in 1943, James C. M. Lo (1902–1987) and his wife, Lucy, arrived at Dunhuang by horse and donkey-drawn cart. -

Ceci est essentiellement dû à la rareté des représentations fgurées. Cependant, des fouilles récentes ont permis de découvrir quelques fagments de sculptures en stuc et en argile, en même temps que des moules doubles en mortier de gypse qui éclairent d’un nouveau jour les techniques de fabrication des sculptures. Le procédé de fabrication d’une sculpture est identique pour les deux types de matériaux puisque le modelage de la fgure se fait grâce à l’application successive de couches d’argile et de stuc (ou les deux), de plus en plus fnes et pures. -

Indistinct Union: Christianity, Integral Philosophy, and Politics Yazidis and the Original Religion of the Near East The horrific bombing in the Kurdish regions around Kirkuk (death toll estimates currently at 400) targeted the Yazidis, a smallish Kurdish (but non-Muslim) sect. The Ys tended to separate themselves from the Peshmerge (the Kurdish military), which likely resulted in their being left vulnerable to this brutal attack. (For interviews with some Yazidis, here via BBC). Who are theologically the Yazidis ? For repeat readers, they will know I support the (somewhat) controversial thesis of Christian scholar Margaret Barker (known as Royal Temple Theology). Barker’s first work is titled The Older Testament. A brilliant way to describe her point of view–namely that the Judaism that comes across in the Hebrew Bible we currently have has been massively (re)edited, more than most scholars will admit, by the Deuteronomic/Rabbinic schools of Judaism. The Older Testament (as opposed to the “Old Testament” of the Deutro. school) included the belief in two g/Gods. The first was the High God (El, Elyon) who had “sons” (angelic beings). Each angel, known as an angel of the nation, was chosen for a specific people. As above so below. i.e. When their was war on earth between two peoples, their angels were fighting in heaven. Hence all the Psalms rousing YHWH (Israel’s Angel/god) to fight. The second G/god then is YHWH for Israel. -

In order to reach India, and in order to return, Xuanzang journeyed through areas in what is now called Central Asia. After he came home to China in 645 C.E., his work included writing an account of the countries he had visited: The Great Tang Dynasty Record of the Western Regions (Da Tang Xi You Ji 大唐西域記). The book is not a narrative travelogue, but rather presented as a collection of facts about the various countries he visited. Nevertheless, the Record is full of moral judgments, both stated and implied. Xuanzang’s judgment was frequently connected both to his Buddhist beliefs and a conviction that China represented the pinnacle of culture and good governance. Xuanzang’s portrayal of Central Asia at a crucial time when the Tang Empire was expanding westward is both inclusive and marginalizing, shaped by the overall framing of Central Asia in the Record and by the selection of local legends from individual nations. The tension in the Record between Buddhist concerns and secular political ones, and between an inclusive worldview and one centered on certain locations, creates an approach to Central Asia unlike that of many similar sources. -

He went to a wise man to learn magic tricks and many other things. The wise man named him Sun Wukong. Needing a weapon, Sun Wukong took the Dragon King’s magic stick by force. For his crime, the Heavenly God brought him to heaven to do a lowly job, but Sun Wukong ran away. So Sakyamuni Buddha put him under a mountain. Five hundred years later, the monk Sanzang passed by and freed him. Sun Wukong then joined him on his trip to India to get some holy Buddhist books. Later they were joined by Zhu Wuneng and Sha Wujing. On the way, the group met two demon brothers who had a magic bottle. Anyone who said the word “what” would be sucked into the bottle. The demons tricked Sun Wukong into the bottle, but he escaped. Sun Wukong then tricked the two brothers into the bottle. Further along the way, Sun Wukong fought to get a witch’s magic fan to put out the fire on a mountain so they could cross the mountain. Finally, after fourteen years, Sanzang and his followers arrived at a monastery where Sakyamuni Buddha was staying. The Buddha gave Sanzang 5,048 scrolls. With the help of the Buddha’s guards, the group took only eight days to return home. Sanzang, Sun Wukong, and Zhu Wuneng eventually became Buddhas, and Sha Wujing became a worthy one. -

In fact, today in the Khorezm region archaeologists have found dozens of ancient cies, ruins of former powerful castles and royal palaces.
