Plot On Halloween, 1968, in the small town of Mill Valley, Pennsylvania, three teenage friends, Stella, Auggie, and Chuck, prank bully Tommy Milner. When Tommy and his gang pursue them in retaliation, the trio escape to a drive-in movie theater, where a young drifter named Ramón hides it in his car. They invited Ramón to explore a local haunted house that once belonged to the wealthy Bellows family, who helped Mill Valley. In it, they found a horror storybook written by Sarah Bellows, who allegedly committed suicide in the house. After following the group, Tommy locks them inside along with Ruth, Chuck's sister. They run away, and Stella picks up Sarah's book. Stella discovers a new story, titled Harold, Harold, in Sarah's book. Meanwhile, in fact, a drunk Tommy is stalked by the titular Harold, the scarecrow of his family, after a life again. The creature stabs him with a pitchfork, causing Tommy to vomit hay and undergo a violent transformation. Tommy was later reported missing; Stella and Ramón find Harold wearing Tommy's clothes. Although Stella is convinced that Tommy has turned into a scarecrow, others are skeptical. That night, a new story, The Big Toe, appears with Auggie as the main character. The pair try to warn him of a monster: a zombie searching for his missing leg, which is inside a stew that Auggie unwittingly eats. Auggie disappears after a zombie drags her under her bed. Realizing they were next, the remaining friends tried to destroy the book; when this proved impossible, they researched Sarah's life in hopes of finding a solution. A new story, The Red Spot, was written. When Ruth finds a swollen spider bite on her cheek, she explodes and releases hundreds of small spiders. Ruth was rescued but traumatised and placed in a psychiatric hospital. The group's investigation took them to a local hospital, where they discovered that Sarah's brother performed electrical shock therapy on her as part of a closure operation. The family factory had poisoned the city's water with mercury, and Sarah was tortured by her family for trying to reveal the truth, and was blamed for the act. In the hospital, Chuck is attacked by the Pale Woman, the ghost of his recurring nightmare, who absorbs him. Stella and Ramón were arrested for unseeded entry by Police Chief Turner, who revealed that Ramón was a draft Vietnam War dodger. Ramón reveals to Stella that it was out of fear after her brother signed up and her body was returned to them intersecting. Turner's dog begins to act strangely, and Ramón realizes that the next creature is Jangly Man, a monster from a campfire story that scares him as a child. Jangly's man kills Turner before trying to kill Ramón. Ramón and Stella escape, and she lured the creature away while Stella goes to Bellows' house to end Sarah's actions. Stella is taken back in time, living part of Sarah's experience of the torture her family endured. She promises Sarah's ghost that she will tell the true story of Sarah's life and the truth of her innocence if she stops hurting people with her story. Sarah forces him to write a true story in blood before he and Jangly's man disappears. Stella writes the truth about Sarah's life in the paper to the city keeping her promise. Ramón accepts his registration and shares an emotional farewell with Stella before she goes to war. [7] It was announced in 2014 that writer John August had been set to pen a film version. [8] On January 14, 2016, it was announced that Guillermo del Toro would develop the film, as well as possibly direct, and that he would also co-produce with Sean Daniel, Jason Brown, and Elizabeth Grave, with Roberto Grande and Joshua Long executive producing. [9] In February 2016, CBS Films hired screenwriter duo Dan and Kevin Hageman to polish a draft written by Aug. [10] In December 2017, it was reported that André Øvredal would direct the film. [11] The Hagemans received final screenplay credits, with del Toro, Patrick Melton, and Marcus Dunstan receiving story by credits. CBS Films is co-financed with Entertainment One. [12] In August 2018, Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Austin Abrams, Gabriel Rush, Austin Zajur, and Natalie Ganzhorn joined the cast. [13] In September 2018, Dean Norris, Gil Bellows, Lorraine Toussaint, and Javier Botet were also added. [17] Principal photography began on August 27, 2018, and ended on November 1, 2018, in Hamilton, Ontario. [19] In July 2019, at San Diego Comic-Con, del Toro explained why Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark wasn't produced as an anthology film: When we started talking about this about five years ago, I had to think about it ... Anthology movies are always as bad as the worst stories in them – they're never as good as the best stories... [20] I remember in Pan's Labyrinth, I made a book called 'The Book of Crossroads'. I think it can great if we have a book that reads you, and it writes what you fear most. Then the themes become the stories we tell each other. [20] The first marketing the film premiered during Super Bowl LIII. [22] The first trailer was released on March 28, 2019, and the second on June 3, 2019. On August 5, 2019, a third trailer was released, featuring a cover version of Donovan's song Season of the Witch, by Lana Del Rey, which was performed for the film's soundtrack. [23] In all, the studio spent more than $20 million promoting the film. [3] The theatrical release of the film was released theatrically in the United States on August 9, 2019, by CBS Films via Lionsgate. [24] Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark home media was released in the US on digital downloads by Lionsgate Home Entertainment on October 22, 2019 and also on Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD on November 5. [26] Reception Box office Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark grossed $68.9 million in the United States and Canada, and $35.6 million in other regions, for a total of $104.5 million worldwide. [2] In the United States and Canada, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was released alongside The Kitchen, Dora and lost City of Gold, The Art of Racing in the Rain, and Brian Banks, and is projected to gross $15-17 million from 3,000 theaters in its opening weekend. [28] The film made $8.8 million on its first day, including $2.33 million from Thursday night's preview. It then debuted to $20.8 million, finishing second, behind holdover Hobbs & Shaw. [3] It fell 52% in the second weekend to $10.1 million, finishing fifth. [29] Critical response on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 78% approval rating based on 221 reviews, with an average rating of 6.46/10. The site's critical consensus reads, Like the best-selling book series that inspired it, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark opens the creepy gates to horror for fans of the younger genre. [30] Metacritic gave the film a weighted average score of 61 out of 100, based on 30 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews. [31] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average rating of C on an A+ to F scale, while those at PostTrak gave it an average of 3 out of 5 stars and 53% definite recommendation. [3] Variety's Owen Gleiberman wrote that the film faithfully recreates the peak moments of half a dozen of Schwartz's most popular stories, but does not fully embrace Gammell's vision, referring to the ugliness of illustration in the original book series. [32] Ben Kenisberg of The New York Times called the film a fun fan service. [33] Keith Uhlich of The Hollywood Reporter constantly called it an unfortunate adaptation, adding that the monsters depicted in the film are scary, although they would be much more if they felt less like IPs that could be in the franchise and more like strong expressions of the disease of the era where the film aims to comment. [34] William Bibbiani of Bloody Disgusting wrote that the film often works very well for minutes of gasping at a time. But among those very scary there are a lot of fillers, a lot of perfume plotting and a lot of mediocre character development. [35] Alan Jacques of the Limerick Post gave the film two points out of five and stated the film was clearly not intended for pre-teen audiences. There are one or two really creepy moments that will make your precious nippers sleep with the lights on until they finish college.... For a young audience coming to horror for the first time, this isn't a bad place to start, but for anyone with a real appreciation of the genre it may feel a bit boring and un original. [36] In his review for The Verge, Noah Berlatsky stated ... Scary Stories is insightful and conscious in its assessment of how stories control people, rather than vice versa. Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was supposed to be the meta-fiction virtuoso of the summer, but his rewritten happy ending, reflecting on the impotence of writing, seems far more bleak than scary Stories' recognition that some scripts will take you a long way where you'll never be seen again. [37] Tomris Laffly of RogerEbert.com gave the film three stars out of four, stating Still, Scary Stories was an oddly exhilarating throw for the ancient clans of investigative teenagers. While it doesn't spoil the new land, there's a lot of vintage fun to do with kids who feel their way through the fear of life to come and live to tell the story. [38] Writing for The Guardian, Simran Hans gave the film three stars out of five, noting Producer and co-author Guillermo del Toro brought Alvin Schwartz's much-loved children's book series to the big screen, but this uneven film could not decide who was trying to scare. [39] Richard Brody of the New Yorker mentioned There is an authentic charm to the subtle didacticism of the Scary Stories plot, which embodies the virtues it promotes. In the process of displaying the redeeming power of factual knowledge, however, the film flattens and tames the power of imagination. [40] David Ehrlich of IndieWire added André Øvredal's film adaptation, as smart and well-crafted as it is, could not help but reverse the formula that the source material relied on for its success. Here is an R-rated concept that has been watered down to qualify for the PG-13 film; it's a lot harrowing and full of terrible effects, but it never feels dangerous. [41] Julie Beck of the Atlantic noted the best scary stories do that—they get under your skin and appear again and again. (Worms crawl in, worms crawl out.) Scary Stories movies just bounce straight away. David Fear of Rolling Stone gave the film three stars out of five, commenting It's all a lot of chain crunching, black-cat-screeching fun, though it's not like an explosion that you don't how generic and ramshackle the whole venture feels... Unfortunately, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark will largely be seen by the completion of the jaded and fortysomething nostalgic genre. Wrong demographic. You owe it to your children to bring them to this. It's a training-wheel horror done right. [43] Aja Romano of Vox gave the film three and a half points out of five and wrote ... The film relies on the opportunity to tell a story beset by cultural anxieties of the past that strongly reflect the present. It's much more like a classic piece of young adult fiction than adapted teen fiction; the focus is not on children, but on teenagers coming of age in a turbulent, complicated, and often unfair world. Their supernatural monsters, by contrast, are wiped out of teenage fears and fantasies. The resulting folklore aesthetic makes scary stories more effective as a fun visual horror. But on a thematic level, it creates discord with the social horror of more mature films, and the two elements never quite unite. [44] A.A. Dowd of The A.V. Club gave the film a B grade and wrote Like scouts gathered around a campfire, each trying to send a bigger cold to the other, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark kept coming up with new gruesome attractions, piling one on top of the next. Yet as dirty and spooky and, yes, sometimes terrifying as these terror tactics are, they never quite cross to the deep end of a truly grown-up horror. [45] Neil Soans of The Times of India gave the film three stars out of five, noting the screenplay ended up as a jumble of unexplored ideas on screen rather than a cohesive narrative. However, if you only enjoy horror movies for creepy monsters, you will manage to get one or two kicks. [46] A sequel on April 23, 2020, it was announced that a sequel to the film was officially under development, with Øvredal returning to the director and Paramount Pictures (which absorbed CBS Films as part of the Viacom/CBS merger). [48] Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Natalie Ganzhorn, and Dean Norris will reprise their roles with Dan and Kevin Hageman returning as writers and Guillermo del Toro returning as producers.
