From Terrence Malick to Richard Linklater to Robert Rodriguez, Austin's film community has a long-standing tradition of individuality and independence. Fantastic Fest embodies this with more than 100 films from more than 30 countries, bringing to Austin such unique and diverse programming as vampire films from Sweden, action films from Australia, a comedy starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and the new comedy film from Kevin Smith. Fantastic Fest is part of what helps keep Austin weird, and we love it for that. But just as important is how it shows the international film community once again that Austin is one of the most film-friendly cities in all of North America. From Austin Studios to the Alamo Drafthouse, Austin's love and commitment to film sets it apart – a fact we couldn't be more proud of. We sincerely hope that the Fantastic Fest 2008 experience will bring a new audience of filmmakers and movie lovers to appreciate Austin as one of the best places anywhere to make a movie or just go see one. Thanks to everyone involved in the festival, from the filmmakers to the staff to the audience itself for their support of Austin cinema. We hope everyone has a blast at Fantastic Fest 2008! Regards, Will Wynn Austin Mayor The City of Austin is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Reasonable modifications and equal access to communications will be provided upon request. STATE OF TEXAS OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR TEXAS FILM COMMISSION September 2008 Welcome Fantastic Festers, You have chosen wisely. Watercolor Art Society - Houston | Washrag Newsletter | February 2018 1 February 2018 January 2018 Gallery Exhibit: HOPE Houston artist and long-time WAS-H friend and instructor Ellen Orseck judged the January Monthly Exhibit. Her prevailing comment on all the work was that each piece, in its own way, spoke to the much needed quality of HOPE in our world today. The winners are: 1st Place - Christine Bunger “See the Light” 2nd Place - Lynda Jung “No Time Is the Right Time” 3rd Place - Fred Kingwill “The Future—Robin’s Eggs” Honorable Mentions awarded to: Sana Shaw “Awakening of the Star” Richard Scruggs “El Camino Pilgrims” Robin Beckwith “Fragments of Imagined Spring” Liz Hill “Leopard Hat” Each of the first three winners draws the viewer into the center of the painting and beyond! Chris Bunger’s stunning copse of tall trees reaching for the sky and light draws us out of the current darkness of the world to a spiritual point of light and hope and life. Lynda Jung’s 1st place - Christine Bunger “See the Light” reflection on time stretches us to think of time past, present and future, within the clock-like piece she places organic and non-organic elements of life. Fred Kingwill’s small piece uses the circular, womb-like nature of the nest holding the promise of new life to strengthen our hope in the future. Ellen also found it interesting that each of these pieces effectively broke the traditional rule of not centering the focal point on the page. It is the quality of BEYONDNESS and HOPE IN THE FUTURE in each of the pieces that makes the break 2nd place - Lynda Jung “No Time Is the 3rd place - Fred Kingwell “The Future— successful! NEURO SMARTER ABOUT PEOPLE WHO THE LEGACY OF ‘NeuroTribes is a sweeping and penetrating history, presented with a rare sympathy and sensitivity . it will change how you think of autism.’—From the foreword by Oliver Sacks STEVE SILBERMAN What is autism: a devastating developmental disorder, a lifelong FOREWORD BY disability, or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin AUTISM to certain forms of genius? In truth, it is all of these things and more OLIVER —and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. TRIBES SACKS Following on from his ground breaking article ‘The Geek Syndrome’, AND HOW TO THINK Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, THINK DIFFERENTLY long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for identifying it, and discovers why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years. Going back to the earliest autism research and chronicling the brave and lonely journey of autistic people and their families through the decades, Silberman provides long-sought solutions to the autism puzzle, while mapping out a path towards a more humane world in which people with learning differences have access to the resources they need to live happier and more meaningful lives. NEUROTRIBES He reveals the untold story of Hans Asperger, whose ‘little professors’ STEVE SILBERMAN were targeted by the darkest social-engineering experiment in human history; exposes the covert campaign by child psychiatrist Leo Kanner THE LEGACY OF to suppress knowledge of the autism spectrum for fifty years; and casts light on the growing movement of ‘neurodiversity’ activists seeking respect, accommodations in the workplace and education, and the right to self-determination for those with cognitive differences.

As of November, the market share for Korean films in the domestic market stood at 55 percent, which indicates that the yearly market share of Korean films will be over 50 percent for the third year in a row. In the international arena as well, Korean films were invited to major international film festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Locarno, and San Sebastian and received a warm reception from critics and audiences. It is often said that the current prosperity of Korean cinema is due to the strong commitment and policies introduced by the KIM Dae-joong government in 1999 to promote Korean films.

  • What Are You So Scared About?: Understanding the False
What Are You So Scared About?: Understanding the False Fear Response to Horror Films Sarah Seyler HSS 490-01H Faculty Director: Dr. Jeffrey Adams April 22nd, 2019 1 When a horror movie delivers a scare to an audience member, it is able to achieve something that is entirely illogical; it has made someone scared of something that poses no threat. So what is the logic behind a horror film? What aspects make a horror movie, something that can pose no physical threat, scary? In order to solve this question, many different aspects of filmmaking in horror will be looked at, including filmmaking techniques, psychological manipulation through storytelling, and the exploration of certain cultural elements in horror films that contextualize the fears a society has. By analyzing the different aspects of horror, we can understand how and why a movie is able to override the rational side of a viewer’s brain and make them scared. We can then understand why these aspects cause the body to have a physical reaction to the false threat, and why some people respond more intensely to horror than others. The goal of any movie is to elicit some sort of emotional response in the audience observing the film, and this is no different for horror movies. However, instead of a joy or sadness response, the horror movie aims to cause an observer to feel some sort of fear -- whether that be an immediate physical fear or longer-lasting psychological distress. Scaring people may sound simple, however it is actually a pretty complex process, as the film must be logical enough for the audience to buy into, allowing them to become immersed in the movie.

  • Film Reviews
Page 117 FILM REVIEWS Year of the Remake: The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man Jenny McDonnell The current trend for remakes of 1970s horror movies continued throughout 2006, with the release on 6 June of John Moore’s The Omen 666 (a sceneforscene reconstruction of Richard Donner’s 1976 The Omen) and the release on 1 September of Neil LaBute’s The Wicker Man (a reimagining of Robin Hardy’s 1973 film of the same name). In addition, audiences were treated to remakes of The Hills Have Eyes, Black Christmas (due Christmas 2006) and When a Stranger Calls (a film that had previously been ‘remade’ as the opening sequence of Scream). Finally, there was Pulse, a remake of the Japanese film Kairo, and another addition to the body of remakes of nonEnglish language horror films such as The Ring, The Grudge and Dark Water. Unsurprisingly, this slew of remakes has raised eyebrows and questions alike about Hollywood’s apparent inability to produce innovative material. As the remakes have mounted in recent years, from Planet of the Apes to King Kong, the cries have grown ever louder: Hollywood, it would appear, has run out of fresh ideas and has contributed to its evergrowing bank balance by quarrying the classics. Amid these accusations of Hollywood’s imaginative and moral bankruptcy to commercial ends in tampering with the films on which generations of cinephiles have been reared, it can prove difficult to keep a level head when viewing films like The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man.

Acknowledgements If I were to list every person who helped me on my journey towards the completion of my Ph.D., this section would be longer than the dissertation itself. Although I want to thank everyone, these limitations require me to note only those whose support was instrumental, endless, and tireless. First and foremost, I want to thank my advisor, Joshua Gunn. Josh’s patience, diligence, and guidance are unmatched and I am truly blessed to be one of his advisees. Mere words are not capable of expressing how much I appreciate his efforts and his meticulous attention to detail pushed me to produce the very best work that I could. He is someone that I am proud to call a mentor and humbled to call a friend. I would also like to thank the other members of my dissertation committee.

SENE on Screen: The beloved film festival returns for its 13th year For more than a decade, the annual SENE (rhymes with scene) Film Festival has celebrated film, art and music, and this year’s festival, which takes place October 13 – 16, will screen 130 films from around the world. SENE was created by producing director Don Farias and artistic director Phil Capobres, who work to create a welcoming atmosphere for festival entrants and attendees. And their efforts paid off — for four years in a row, SENE was named one of the Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee by MovieMaker Magazine, one of the most respected voices in the film industry, and was rated one of the best reviewed festivals by FilmFreeway. The festival made its COVID comeback over the summer. “We were thrilled that we were able to host fun events for visiting filmmakers in June,” said Farias. “It’s the first time in over a year that the world felt almost normal. I was impressed with the attendance, especially since I was not sure if people were actually ready to leave their homes. It was nice to see the filmmakers meeting new friends at our networking events. Everyone was ready to collaborate and begin creating films again. We expect October to be bigger with more filmmakers attending.” SENE has been a powerful force in building community within the local film world, and while the festival receives films from all around the world, it makes a point to highlight all things local. The festival will kick off on Wednesday, October 13, with a special screening of local filmmaker Christian De Rezendes’ SLATERSVILLE, a much-anticipated episodic documentary on the 200-year history of the first industrialized mill village in the U.S., located in the heart of the Blackstone Valley.
