Thanks for your everlasting love and care and support. 3 Abstract Chinese museums have experienced dramatic changes during the time of the People’s Republic of China (1949 - present) at the same time as the country itself has undergone dramatic changes. This thesis explores the correlation between museum and political and policy changes in the Peoples Republic of China with selected regional museums as the research object. The objective is to study what changes have taken place in selected Chinese regional museums and understand what roles political and policy changes in the country have had on the process. Six regional museums from four regions are examined. Major focus is on the broad changes within the museums at the same time as close examination on the specific museum representations has been carried out. Pertinent issues include diversity and unity, regional identity and national identity, representation of identity, regional development policy and cultural tourism. The research revealed that policy has a strong influence on all the museums studied but there are also differences between regions. Museums are not only the targets but also the instruments of policy and government. Introduction Museums are changing, which is reflected in their functions, their roles, their operations as well as their definitions. Kenneth Hudson (1998) once argued that “the museum refuses to stand still” (p. 43). Hudson notes one facet of museum change in that there is generally an aspiration of the museum, through its staff, for change. There is, however, another facet related to museums and change in that the museum is not immune to external change. Forces that generate museum change come from a number of sources including governments (of different levels), the public, related disciplines or peers. This thesis targets at museum and change and explores the correlation between museum and political and policy changes in the Peoples Republic of China (hereafter as PRC) through selected regional museums. The four limbs are relatively short. A cladistic analysis shows that the new materials represent a muntjak that is not in a sister-group relationship with Muntiacus leilaoensis from Yuanmou Late Miocene hominoid site, but rather represents an independent branch. Muntiacus zhaotongensis sp. nov. is proposed for the new muntjak materials.

    DOI: 10.4312/as.2019.7.2.47-86 47 Transmission of Han Pictorial Motifs into the Western Periphery: Fuxi and Nüwa in the Wei-Jin Mural Tombs in the Hexi Corridor*8 ∗∗ Nataša VAMPELJ SUHADOLNIK 9 Abstract This paper examines the ways in which Fuxi and Nüwa were depicted inside the mu- ral tombs of the Wei-Jin dynasties along the Hexi Corridor as compared to their Han counterparts from the Central Plains. Pursuing typological, stylistic, and iconographic approaches, it investigates how the western periphery inherited the knowledge of the divine pair and further discusses the transition of the iconographic and stylistic design of both deities from the Han (206 BCE–220 CE) to the Wei and Western Jin dynasties (220–316). Furthermore, examining the origins of the migrants on the basis of historical records, it also attempts to discuss the possible regional connections and migration from different parts of the Chinese central territory to the western periphery. On the basis of these approaches, it reveals that the depiction of Fuxi and Nüwa in Gansu area was modelled on the Shandong regional pattern and further evolved into a unique pattern formed by an iconographic conglomeration of all attributes and other physical characteristics. Accordingly, the Shandong region style not only spread to surrounding areas in the central Chinese territory but even to the more remote border regions, where it became the model for funerary art motifs. This paper discusses the critical issues faced by Gansu Provincial Museum in attracting and maintaining its audiences, and how it engages digital technology to create new compelling exhibits via the use of both digital and multimedia tools. Real life examples using virtual reality, augmented reality and interactive games will be briefly discussed. Keywords: Smart Museum, CAVE, Sand Model, Digitization 1 Introduction As digital technology evolves, more and more conventional museums are exploring new and innovative methods to go beyond the mere display of physical artefacts. Gansu provincial museum is no otherwise. The urge to engage technologies becomes stronger as visitors become more affluent and are seeking more enriching experiences that digital technologies can provide. Technologies that can share deeper contextual information about the museum’s cultural artefacts include touch screens, projectors, multi-medias, virtual reality and interactive games. However, all these are made possible and be exploited to the very best only if the cultural exhibits are digitally available. Digital exhibits provide opportunities for the production of new information by recreating interactive models and incorporating visual and sound effects. Such end products form better and efficient tools for disseminating valuable information about the artefacts than if they were merely displayed physically. 1.1 Objectives of the paper This paper discusses how Gansu Provincial Museum engages digital technology to resolve its main issue of creating new compelling exhibits via the use of both digital and multimedia tools.
