Emmy Award- Winning Nightly Newscast from Vice Media and HBO THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS AND SCIENCES ANNOUNCES WINNERS AT THE 39th ANNUAL NEWS & DOCUMENTARY EMMY® AWARDS Paula S. Apsell, Senior Executive Producer, PBS’ NOVA Receives Lifetime Achievement Award New York, N.Y. – October 1, 2018 (revised 10.02.18) – Winners of the 39th Annual News and Documentary Emmy® Awards were announced tonight by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). The News & Documentary Emmy® Awards were presented at a ceremony at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City. “I’m particularly proud to be here for tonight’s celebration of News and Documentaries, given the intersection at which we find journalism and political discourse these days,” said Terry O’Reilly, Chairman, NATAS. “At a time when some seek to perpetuate politically useful falsehoods in the furtherance of partisan ideology, we have never needed our nation’s journalists and documentarians more.” “It is more important than ever that we recognize and defend our peers’ integrity, clarity, and dedication to the First Amendment’s protected mandate,” said Adam Sharp, Interim-President & CEO, NATAS. “This year’s nominees are shining examples of that ethic. Their stories took us to the front lines of war and disaster, cast light into hidden corners of government and the corporate boardroom, and revealed both the outermost reaches of space and the innermost complexities of the human body. In addition, we are honored to be celebrating the work of Paula Apsell with our Lifetime Achievement Award. Her explorations of science continue to inform and inspire millions of viewers as she continues to take PBS’ NOVA to new heights.” The event was attended by more than 1,000 television and news media industry executives, news and documentary producers and journalists. Emmy® Awards were presented in 49 categories. This year’s award presenters included: Kate Bolduan, anchor, CNN’s morning show, At This Hour and formerly co-anchored New Day and The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. She also contributed to CNN’s award- winning coverage of the 2012 & 2016 Presidential elections. Ana Cabrera, anchors the weekend primetime edition of CNN Newsroom and throughout 2017 and 2018 has extensively covered the DACA deal, the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, VA, Hurricanes Harvey and Maria, the Southerland Springs, TX church shootings and many of the top breaking news stories of the year.     ON THE EFFECTIVE USE OF PROXY WARFARE by Andrew Lewis Peek A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland May 2021 2021 Andrew Peek All rights reserved Abstract This dissertation asks a simple question: how are states most effectively conducting proxy warfare in the modern international system? It answers this question by conducting a comparative study of the sponsorship of proxy forces. It uses process tracing to examine five cases of proxy warfare and predicts that the differentiation in support for each proxy impacts their utility. In particular, it proposes that increasing the principal-agent distance between sponsors and proxies might correlate with strategic effectiveness. That is, the less directly a proxy is supported and controlled by a sponsor, the more effective the proxy becomes. Strategic effectiveness here is conceptualized as consisting of two key parts: a proxy’s operational capability and a sponsor’s plausible deniability. These should be in inverse relation to each other: the greater and more overt a sponsor’s support is to a proxy, the more capable – better armed, better trained – its proxies should be on the battlefield. However, this close support to such proxies should also make the sponsor’s influence less deniable, and thus incur strategic costs against both it and the proxy. These costs primarily consist of external balancing by rival states, the same way such states would balance against conventional aggression. Conversely, the more deniable such support is – the more indirect and less overt – the less balancing occurs.

    1 THE 25TH HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES HIFF AWARD WINNERS FOR BEST NARRATIVE FEATURE AND BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE UNDER THE TREE AND LOTS OF KIDS, A MONKEY AND A CASTLE Julie Andrews, Dick Cavett and Patrick Stewart Honored at Festival East Hampton, NY (October 9, 2017) – The 25th Hamptons International Film Festival today announced their award winners at a ceremony in East Hampton. UNDER THE TREE, directed by Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson won the Award for Best Narrative Feature. LOTS OF KIDS, A MONKEY AND A CASTLE, directed by Gustavo Salmerón, received the Award for Best Documentary Feature, sponsored by ID Films. DEKALB ELEMENTARY, directed by Reed Van Dyk, and EDITH+EDDIE, directed by Laura Checkoway, received the Award for Best Narrative Short Film and for Best Documentary Short Film, respectively. COMMODITY CITY, directed by Jessica Kingdon, received an Honorable Mention for Documentary Short Film. The Tangerine Entertainment Juice Fund Award was awarded to NOVITIATE, directed by Maggie Betts. This award honors an outstanding female narrative filmmaker. WANDERLAND, directed by Josh Klausner, was awarded the Suffolk County Next Exposure Grant. This program supports the completion of high quality, original, director-driven, low- budget independent films from both emerging and established filmmakers who have completed 50% of principal photography within Suffolk County. The film was awarded a $3,000 grant. HONDROS, directed by Greg Campbell, was awarded the 2017 Brizzolara Family Foundation Award for a Film of Conflict and Resolution, sponsored by HighTower Sports and Entertainment. THE LAST PIG, directed by Allison Argo, was awarded the Zelda Penzel Giving Voice to the Voiceless Award.

This year’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to broadcasting legend and cable news icon Larry King. “Larry King is one of the most notable figures in the history of cable news, and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is delighted to present him with this year’s lifetime achievement award,” said Malachy Wienges, Chairman, NATAS. “Over the course of his career Larry King has interviewed an enormous number of public figures on a remarkable range of topics.
