Weekly Update Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.177 – Great Expectations Australia vs New Zealand – 1st Test, Optus Stadium,Perth, West Australia Expectations are indeed high for this series which starts this evening at 6.00pm. This Test will be the 58th Test between NZ and Australia. Australia has played 351 tests against England, 98 against South Africa, 116 vs West Indies, 98 vs India, 64 vs Pakistan, 29 vs Sri Lanka, 3 vs Zimbabwe and 6 vs Bangladesh. New Zealand has played 105 vs England, 45 vs South Africa, 47 vs West Indies, 57 vs India, 58 vs Pakistan, 36 vs Sri Lanka, 19 vs Zimbabwe and 13 vs Bangladesh This will be 4th Test between us at Perth, the Australian city with the largest percentage of New Zealanders. All 3 have been played in November – the first, in 1989, was most notable for Mark Greatbatch scoring 76 and 146* and he and Martin Snedden coming together at 7/234 and holding out 202 minutes to stumps and a draw. Next, 8 years later in 1997, we lost rather dismally by an innings and 70 runs We played in Perth, 18 years ago in 2001, we batted first and piled on 534/9 dec. – Lou Vincent 104, Stephen Fleming 105, Nathan Astle 156 and Adam Parore 110. Aussies, 7/381 in their 2nd innings needing 440 to win, held out for a draw. The 4th occasion – a runfest in 2015 – Warner hit 253 of Australia’s 559/9dec. to which we replied with 624 – Kane Williamson 166 and Ross Taylor 290 – unsurprisingly the Test was a draw. AND NOW, AT THE NEW OPTUS STADIUM,WE MEET THERE AGAIN! NO LONGER AT THE WACA, WILL THERE BE PACE IN THE PITCH? AND WILL LOCKIE BE UNLEASHED? Last Evening at Cornwall – Men’s Premier T20. Ganesh 5/9 Round 1. Wednesday, 11 Dec.. Parnell vs Cornwall at Cornwall Park PARNELL 143/8 (20) Ben Horne 54* (44), Ben Rae 19 (11), Brad Rodden 15 (16), Aniket Parikh 15 (14) CORNWALL 95/10 (19) Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 5/9 (4overs, 1 maiden), Ben Horne 2/9 (2) RESULT: Parnell won by 48 runs After Ben Horne had held our innings together, Craig Speakman recorded the action and provides a study of Ganesh’s action: And a wicket Jubilation – the smile tells all! Last Saturday – Jeff Crowe Cup Round 3. Round 3. 7 Dec.. Parnell vs Howick Pakuranga at Lloyd Elsmore Park 1. PARNELL 229/6 (48) Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 64 (110), Ben Horne 98 (114), Brad Rodden 25 (34) Extras 31 (26w, 1nb,4lb), M McClenaghan 2/38 (9), D Grobbelaar 2/30 (10) CORNWALL 228/7 (48) W Walsh 38 (78), B Barnard 45 (46), A Jones 31 (29), R Botadra 25* (25) Josh Fisher 3/48 (10), Fanie de Villiers 1/58 (10), Keegan Russell 2/34 (10). Aniket Parikh 1/45 (7). Also – Jack Parsons 0/20 (5) and Ben Horne 0/28 (6) RESULT: Parnell won by 12 runs (DLS – rain reduced game to 48/48 & HP needing 241 to win, not 230) Howick Pak. produced their “All Star” attack of former Black Cap, Mitch McClenaghan, and Aces Donovan Grobbelaar and Jamie Brown backed by Rutvik Botadra and the very promising Adam Jones. Missing for HP were McEwen and Fernz – away with the Aces in Hobart. We were lacking Lockie (Black Caps), Will Somerville and Mark Chapman (Aces) and key pace bowlers Ollie Pringle and Ganesh Ratnasabapathy and spinner Nikith Perera (Auckland U19s). Aces at least let us have Ben Horne who had a rest from the gloves and tested his bowlingarm instead. And what a disasterous start – Ben Rainger lbw to McClenaghan 1st ball and Ben Rae lbw to Grobbelaar – both without scoring. Not fazed, Flynn and Ben Horne rescued the situation – from 2/3 they took the total to 169 when Jamie Brown snared Ben for 98. Flynn carried with his skipper before being caught off Brown 200/4. Rain disrupted the final flurry – a long break at 42 overs then 3 more to close. Absolutely full marks to Ben Horne – a superb 98 and to Flynn for his truly excellent support! Flynn McGregor-Sumpter (left) with Ben Horne (right) put on 166 for the 3rd wicket – a match winning effort! Chasing the DLS adjusted total of 241, Howick Pak, in contrast to us, had a sound start before Keegan had Young caught - 55/1. Morrison was run out 2 runs later and Keegan dismissed Walsh at 93. But Barnard threatened till he was cut short by Fanie. More wickets fell but Jones and Botadra stuck and upped the pace – quite tense - I’ll let Craig take up the story: “30 needed off 3 overs, then 23 off 2 overs, 16 off 1 over. Josh an excellent last over - 1, then dot (swing and miss), then 1, so 13 off 3 balls. High catch -Jones caught by Aniket , so 12 to tie 2 balls left, another skied hit caught (McClenaghan caught 1st ball by ’keeper Harry Miller). Jamie Brown blocked the hattrick ball, so a win by 12 runs. Some great mixes of slower balls from Josh”. Very good game and another excellent performance with the ball by Josh Fisher and Keegan Russell. Keegan Russell who made the initial breakthrough Josh Fisher who came back and bowled a great last over Only 1 wicket each to Fanie (left) and Aniket but vital ones of Barnard and L Winn No wickets to either Jack Parsons (left) or Ben Horne but both bowled vitally tight spells Message from our Director of Cricket Dear PCC Members and Supporters. • From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition
From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition GEOFF WATSON Abstract Formerly rather uniform in pattern, sporting biographies have evolved significantly since the 1970s, becoming much more open in their criticism of teammates and administrators as well as being more revealing of their subject’s private lives. This article identifies three transitional phases in the genre; a chronological era, extending from the early twentieth century until the 1960s; an indirectly confessional phase between the 1970s and mid 1980s and an openly confessional phase from the mid-1980s. Despite these changes, sporting biographies continue to reinforce the dominant narratives around sport in New Zealand. New Zealand sporting biographies have a mixed reputation in literary and scholarly circles. Often denigrated for their allegedly formulaic style, they have also been criticised for their lack of insight into New Zealand society.1 Representative of this critique is Lloyd Jones, who wrote in 1999, “sport hardly earns a mention in our wider literature, and … the rest of society is rarely, if ever, admitted to our sports literature.”2 This article examines this perspective, arguing that sporting biographies afford a valuable insight into New Zealand’s changing self- image and values. Moreover, it will be argued that the nature of sporting biographies themselves has changed significantly since the 1980s and that they have become much more open in their discussion of teammates and the personal lives of their subjects. Whatever one’s perspective on the literary merits of sporting biographies, their popular appeal is undeniable. Whereas the print run of most scholarly texts in New Zealand is at best a few thousand, sporting biographies consistently sell in the tens of thousands.

From Ithe day I joined the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s elite panel in 2008, two years after I stood in my first international at the Oval, I trained for every game, and in particular Test matches, in pretty much the same way and certainly with a bit more professionalism than when I played for England back in the 1980s when warm-ups usually consisted of a few laps of the outfield and some stretches with the physio Bernard Thomas, who was the equivalent of a modern-day strength and conditioning coach back then. Two days before the game started, I would go down to the ground, dump my gear in the umpires’ 17 GUNNER: MY LIFE IN CRICKET room, wander over to the nets and stand at one end during each team’s practice and just observe. When you think about it, it’s an obvious thing to do. The international game moves so quickly these days that when I began a new series in a different country there were invariably bowlers and batsmen who I had not come across before.
