Von diesen Professoren und Dozenten etwas mehr zu erfahren als den Namen und die Lebensdaten, und damit auch die Ent- wicklung der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität etwas transparenter zu machen, war Hintergrund der Idee, einen „Catalogus Professorum“ zu erstellen. Vorbilder gibt es genügend, beispielsweise für die Universitäten von Heidelberg und Göttingen. Die 250-Jahr-Feier, die den Blick in die Geschichte nahelegt, erschien der Fried - rich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg als der geeignete Zeitpunkt für ein solches Unternehmen. Schon bei den Vorarbeiten zu diesem Projekt, mit denen 1988 begonnen wur- de, zeigten sich die damit verbundenen Probleme: Der aufzunehmende Perso- nenkreis mußte eingegrenzt, Erhebungsraster erstellt, Personal- und Sachmittel bereitgestellt werden. Bei der Frage des Personenkreises mußte die Vollständig- keit hinter der Machbarkeit zurücktreten. Es erwies sich rasch als absolut un- möglich, alle Professoren und Dozenten, die von 1743 bis 1993 irgendwann ein- mal an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität beschäftigt waren, aufzunehmen - die Zahl hätte jeden vernünftigen Rahmen gesprengt. Man einigte sich schließlich auf die Zäsur 31.12.1960, da mit der zum 1.1.1961 erfolgten Aufnahme der Nürnber- ger Wirtschaftshochschule als Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftliche Fakultät die Universität einen ersten Wachstumsschub erhielt und in der Folgezeit auf- grund der massiven Stellenvermehrung der 60er und 70er Jahre quer durch alle Fakultäten weiter wuchs. Die Universität ist bemüht, diese aus der gewählten Zä- sur resultierende Lücke dadurch zu schließen, daß sie in Kürze ein Verzeichnis der momentan an der FAU lehrenden hauptamtlichen Professorinnen und Pro- fessoren sowie der Emeriti herausbringt. Schwieriger noch war es, Erhebungskriterien und -raster aufzustellen und durchzuhalten. Zu sehr haben sich die Laufbahnen in den Jahren verändert, zu unterschiedlich sind sie von Fakultät zu Fakultät, als daß Inkongruenzen voll- ständig vermeidbar gewesen wären. Der Aufwand, der hier zu betreiben war, und die zu klärenden Fragen nahmen im Laufe der Zeit ein solches Ausmaß an, daß Professor Dr. Alfred Wendehorst, als Ordinarius für Fränkische Landeskunde und Universitätsarchivar der nächstliegende Herausgeber, sich außerstande sah, die Arbeit über die konzeptionellen Anfänge hinaus zu übernehmen, da er durch sein Buchprojekt zur Geschichte der Universität, das ebenfalls zum Jubiläum abge- schlossen sein sollte, gebunden war. Auf meine Bitte hin erklärte sich Frau Pro- fessor Dr. Renate Wittern, Ordinaria für Geschichte der Medizin, trotz einiger Be- denken dankenswerterweise bereit, die Herausgabe der auf mehrere Bände an- gelegten Reihe zu übernehmen und sich damit in ein ihr weitgehend fremdes Ge- biet einzuarbeiten. IX Mit der Erhebung, Überprüfung und Zusammenstellung der Daten waren im Laufe der Jahre insgesamt drei Historikerinnen und Historiker - zum Teil nach- einander, zum Teil gleichzeitig - beschäftigt. Frau Eva Wedel-Schaper brachte den Catalogus auf den Weg und erhob den größten Teil der in diesem Band vorlie- genden Daten. Nach ihrem Wechsel an die Freie Universität Berlin führte Herr Christoph Hafner, der mittlerweile zu dem Projekt gestoßen war, die Arbeiten zunächst alleine weiter, nach einiger Zeit gemeinsam mit Frau Astrid Ley, die schließlich nach dem Ausscheiden von Herrn Hafner wiederum allein die end- gültige Fertigstellung des Bandes übernahm. Das Vorwort der Herausgeberin gibt einen kleinen Einblick in die Fragen und Probleme, die dabei zu lösen waren. Die Arbeit wurde zusätzlich erschwert durch den Umstand, daß es außer Fiken- schers „Gelehrten-Lexikon“ aus dem Jahr 1806 kaum Vorarbeiten gab, auf die auf- zubauen gewesen wäre. Mein Dank gilt allen Beteiligten für ihren Einsatz und die Bereitschaft, die nicht immer spannende, aber notwendige detektivische Kleinarbeit auf sich zu nehmen. Einen besonderen Dank schulde ich Frau Kollegin Wittern, die nicht nur zusätzlich zu ihren zahlreichen anderen Arbeiten die Leitung des Projektes und die Herausgabe des Buches übernahm, sondern darüber hinaus eine Stelle aus dem Bestand ihres Lehrstuhls zur Verfügung stellte und damit die Durchführung des Projektes sicherte. Ich bin mir sicher, daß der „Catalogus“ ein weiterer, wesentlicher Mosaikstein für das Verständnis unserer alma mater und ihrer Geschichte ist. Erlangen, im Oktober 1993 Gotthard Jasper Rektor X Einleitung Der erste Band dieses auf mehrere Teile angelegten Verzeichnisses der Er- langer Professoren und Dozenten enthält die Personalbiographien zur Theologi- schen und Juristischen Fakultät. Aufgenommen wurden alle ordentlichen und außerordentlichen Professoren sowie Privatdozenten, die in der Zeit von 1743 bis 1960 mindestens ein Semester lang in Erlangen in der Theologischen oder Juri - stischen Fakultät gelehrt haben. Darüber hinaus wurden die Universitätsmusikdi- rektoren berücksichtigt, da das Institut für Kirchenmusik Teil der Theologischen Fakultät ist. Nicht aufgenommen wurden dagegen Honorarprofessoren, Lehrbe- auftragte, Lektoren und Repetenten, sofern sie nicht auch zu der oben bezeich- neten Gruppe gehörten. Die Vorstellung der akademischen Lehrer erfolgt in Form von insgesamt 244 Kurzbiographien. Die Biographien sind alphabetisch nach dem Familiennamen und, wenn nötig, nach dem ersten Vornamen geordnet, jedoch nach Fakultäten getrennt, wobei, entsprechend der Tradition, die Theologische Fakultät an erster Stelle steht. Die biographischen Daten wurden den im Universitätsarchiv Erlangen (UAE) aufbewahrten Personalakten, dem „Goldenen Buch“ der Universität, den Anna- len der Juristischen Fakultät (= UAE T. 1 Pos. 8 Nr. 10), dem Archiv der Juri- stischen Fakultät (JAE) sowie in Einzelfällen den Acta Facultatis Philosophiae (Acta Fac. Phil.) und den Miscellanea Facultatis Philosophiae (Misc. Fac. Phil.) ent- nommen. Daneben wurde biographische Literatur aller Art (Festschriften, Lexika, Leichenprogramme und Nachrufe etc.) benutzt. Diese Quellen sind unter der sich jeweils am Ende der Biographien befindlichen Rubrik Literatur aufgelistet. Eben- falls verwendet, jedoch nicht eigens genannt, wurden die Personen- und Vorle- sungsverzeichnisse sowie die gedruckt vorliegenden Matrikelkataloge der deut- schen Universitäten. Eine Ausnahme bildet lediglich das von Karl Wagner vorge- legte Register zur Matrikel der Universität Erlangen, auf das jeweils an entspre- chender Stelle verwiesen wird. Die rezenteren Biographien wurden, soweit dies möglich war, den Betreffenden zur Überprüfung und Ergänzung ihrer Daten vor- gelegt. Die ausgewerteten Quellen waren bezüglich der Daten an vielen Stellen wi- der sprüchlich. Wenn keine eindeutige Klärung möglich war, wurden die alterna- tiven, uns weniger wahrscheinlichen Angaben unter Nennung des entsprechen- den Autors in Klammern hinzugefügt, z.B. Konf: ev.-luth. (Müller: kath.). Eindeutig falsche, aber in der einschlägigen Literatur weitergeschleppte Daten oder andere Informationen erscheinen mit dem Zusatz „nicht“ und dem oder den betreffen- den Autor(en) in Klammern hinter der unseren Recherchen zufolge richtigen An- gabe, z.B. Konf: ev.-luth. (nicht Müller: kath.). XI Bei Ortsangaben, welche das Studium oder die universitäre Forschungstätig- keit betreffen, ist unter den Namen der Städte die jeweils dort ansässige Hoch- schule zu verstehen. Eine explizite Benennung der Universität erfolgte nur in Fäl- len, in denen Mißverständnisse möglich wären. Struktur und Inhalt der Biographien Unter dem Namen und ggf. Pseudonym (PS) ist der Zeitraum der Lehrtätig- keit an der Erlanger Universität vermerkt; falls die Emeritierung hier erfolgte, ist in Klammern auch das Ende einer eventuellen Verlängerung der Lehrtätigkeit, in der Regel bis zur Wiederbesetzung des Lehrstuhls, angegeben. Den Lebensdaten mit Geburts- bzw. Sterbeort (geb, gest) schließt sich die An- gabe zur Konfession (Konf ) an. Hierbei wurden die reformierten Bekenntnisse nicht differenziert,

Drickamer As Lutheranism enters the 1980's some theologians are already suggesting that the denominational "battle for the Bible" waged with such fervor in the 1970's was really a "departure from mainstream classical Protestantism." These scholars contend that "the Scripture ruckus" was caused either by "the importation of Fundamentalism into Lutheranism" or else it was "a peculiar distortion wrought by modern Missouri." Such opinions could hardly be further from the truth. Lest this view gain undue credence, we believe it is helpful to indicate that Lutheranism, when it has been true to its tradition, has always had a high regard for the Scriptures as the Word of God. Such a conviction, furthermore, was, in former times, not limited primarily to the Missouri and Wisconsin Synods. It was nearly universal among America's Lutheran bodies. An illustration of this thesis can be found by looking at the doctrine of Biblical authority in the theology of Henry Eyster Jacobs, a major Lutheran theologian of the start of this century, who had no organic connection with either of the Midwest Lutheran Synods that today uphold a "high view" of the Bible.

    Crossing Bearing and Life in a Lutheran Synod: What Can We Learn from Hermann Sasse? The Emmaus Conference Tacoma, Washington 1-2 May 2014 “The Lutheran Churches are still sunning themselves in the delusion that they have something to expect from the world other than the dear holy cross, which all those must carry who proclaim God’s Law and the Gospel of Jesus Christ to mankind. But this delusion will soon disappear”1 so wrote Hermann Sasse in March, 1949. While not exactly equivalent to synods in North American Lutheranism, Hermann Sasse 2(1895-1976) had his own experience with church governments as places for bearing the cross in Germany and later on in Australia. A son of a church of the Prussian Union, Sasse would become a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria, and eventually he would leave that body to immigrate to Australia where he would become a member of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Australia and then after that body’s merger with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Australia, the Lutheran Church of Australia. I propose that Sasse suggests not only a theology of the cross but an ecclesiology of the cross. As Udo Schnelle would put it: “The existence of the church itself is already an application of the theology of the cross.” 3Not long after re-locating to Australia, Sasse would write one of his “letters to Lutheran pastors” on the theologia crucis. This letter, a brilliant and concise introduction to Luther’s conceptuality of the theology of the cross; it also has ramifications for the theme of this paper, cross bearing in the life of a Lutheran Synod.

EDITOR’S INTRODUCTION TO THE ENGLISH EDITION Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s name was introduced to the English-speaking world through the appreciative reception that was given to certain of his writings in the generation following the second world war. Titles such as The Cost of Discipleship, Life Together, Ethics, and Letters and Papers from Prison summoned an image of a courageous pastor and thoughtful the- ologian who rose above the confusion and inaction of his age not only to speak prophetic words of clarity but also to take costly actions of resis- tance against the horrors of National Socialism. His provocative words became a staple among those themselves searching for an adequate response to a ‘world come of age’ in the 1950s and 1960s. He evoked a fearless openness to the challenges of modernity, a way to be Christian without succumbing to mere religiosity, a spiritual path that led into the midst of this world, evoking a compassionate and redemptive embrace of both life’s gifts and its deep wounds and needs. Far less well known and read, however, were the works that come from the first half of Bonhoeffer’s adult life — the writings from the time of his academic preparation for an anticipated professional life as a univer- sity professor, as well as those that were the first fruits of his academic vocation. To be ignorant, however, of his first dissertation Sanctorum Communio,[1] or the university lectures later published as Creation and [1.] Sanctorum Communio was Bonhoeffer’s doctoral dissertation, the first of two theses that were required of a candidate wishing to receive a doctorate and to teach in a German university.

Handren B.A., California Baptist University, 1995 M.Div., American Baptist Seminary of the West, 1999 A POST-COURSE ASSIGNMENT FOR MN 9101-01 HISTORICAL SURVEY OF HERMENEUTICS AND HOMILETICS Submitted to the faculty in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MINISTRY Concentration in Preaching at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School Deerfield, Illinois June, 2013 HISTORICAL SURVEY OF HERMENEUTICS AND HOMILETICS: A SUMMATIVE PAPER In the spring of 2011, I took a Doctor of Ministry course at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School entitled, “Hermeneutics and Homiletics.” One of the required readings was Dennis Johnson’s fine work, Him We Proclaim: Preaching Christ from all the Scriptures. Part one of this book, and particularly chapter four, provides an overview of the history of hermeneutics and homiletics which both aided my understanding of the subject and exposed a significant gap in my knowledge. Specifically, Johnson helped me to see how little I knew about the interpretation and proclamation of the Bible over the last twenty centuries, and how significant a bearing this history has on current issues and debates. Since my Doctor of Ministry concentration is preaching, I thought this gap unacceptable and thus requested an independent reading course which was eventually entitled, “Historical Survey of Hermeneutics and Homiletics.” I set two objectives for the course. First, I aimed to develop a broad and general understanding of the history of the relationship between hermeneutics and homiletics in the Christian church. I have fulfilled this aim by reading a little over five-thousand pages of secondary material, and by building a basic mental framework which now needs to be clarified, strengthened, and built out.

For more information, please contact [email protected]. 35 Martin Luther's Concerns With The Numinous In The Lord's Supper Egil Grislis The University of Manitoba The scholarly attention to Luther’s understanding of the real presence of Christ in the Lord’s Supper has been extensive. The early phase, up to 1520, while generally affirming the real presence, mainly addressed what Luther regarded as Roman Catholic aberrations. Subsequently Luther responded to the Swiss Reformed and German Anabaptist criticisms. Continuing to affirm the real presence, Luther elaborated several key motifs, such as the personal presence of Christ, the idea of testament and promise, the existential need for trust and for courage, the significance of love and faith. In the course of time, these motifs have received a detailed attention. At the same time, the motif of the numinous1 has been rather neglected, namely Luther’s intense awareness of the holiness of God along with the awe, humility, and joy which envelops the authentic experience of faith in Jesus Christ.
