Research in nuclear and analytical chemistry, nuclear chemical engineering and technology (including fuel cycle), radiochemistry and radiation chemistry, and radiobiology were carried out mainly in the Chemistry Division, located at Warsaw Żerań, which became the interdisciplinary Institute of Nuclear Chem- istry and Technology (INCT) in 1983. The INCT is Poland’s most advanced institution in the fi elds of radiochemistry, ra- diation chemistry, nuclear chemical engineering and technology, application of nuclear methods in material engineering and process engineering, radioanalytical techniques, de- sign and production of instruments based on nuclear techniques, environmental research, cellular radiobiology, etc. The results of work at the INCT have been implemented in vari- ous branches of the national economy, particularly in industry, medicine, environmental protection and agriculture. Basic research is focused on: radiochemistry, chemistry of isotopes, physical chemistry of separation processes, cellular radiobiology, and radiation chemistry, particularly that based on the pulse radiolysis method. With its nine electron accelerators in operation and with the staff experienced in the fi eld of electron beam ap- plication, the Institute is one of the most advanced centres of science and technology in this domain. The Institute has four pilot plants equipped with six electron accelerators: for radiation sterilization of medical devices and transplantation grafts; for radiation modifi cation of polymers; for removal of SO2 and NOx from fl ue gases; for food hygiene. The electron beam fl ue gas treatment in the EPS Pomorzany with the accelerators power over 1 MW is the biggest radiation processing facility ever built. The Institute represents the Polish Government in the Euroatom Fuel Supply Agency, in Fuel Supply Working Group of Global Nuclear Energy Partnership and in Radioactive Waste Management Committee of the Nuclear Energy Agency (Organisation for Eco- nomic Co-operation and Development). The INCT Scientifi c Council has the rights to grant D.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in the fi eld of chemistry. The Institute carries out third level studies (doctorate) in the fi eld of nuclear and radiation chemistry and in 2016 four Ph.D. theses were defended. One Ph.D. thesis was defended at the University of Montpellier 2 (Co-tutelle). The Institute won one of the ten projects granted in the action 2 of Erasmus+ pro- gramme. This project “Joint innovative training and teaching/learning program in enhancing development and transfer of application of ionizing radiation in materials processing” is in- tended to fi ll up the gap of education quality between different region of EU countries. While not especially numerous, his works exhibit a sense of great responsibility for each note. He would certainly be more prolific, if this were not the case. He is equally at ease in writing choral, instrumental, and vocal-instrumental music. His work can be classified in four groups according to time of creation. (1) until 1962, search of inspiration dominated by folklore and neostyles ( Toccata ). (2) 1962-1971, a novel and original method of organizing musical time, which resulted in new textural, rhythmic and expressive means ( Visions I , Fragmenti ). (3) 1972-1981 period of stylistic transition towards aleatorics, free sonoric idiom and complex structural approach that is signified by the use of micrometric scale along with the traditional staff notation. Performers gain considerable freedom of choice as far as musical instruments are concerned (e.g., Vox for any wind instrument, Images II for any bowed string instrument).

Musica Intellectualis służy prezentowaniu wyników badań prowadzonych przede wszystkim przez osoby związane z UMFC – profesorów, pracowników uczelni, doktorantów, absolwentów i studentów – ale jest otwarta również dla autorów z innych ośrodków artystycznych i naukowych. Zintegrowanie myśli twórczej w ramach jednej platformy komunikacyjnej daje szansę wypowiedzi zarówno teoretykom muzyki, jak i przedstawicielom kierunków wykonawczych. Materiały w Musica Intellectualis ukazują się w języku polskim w postaci artykułów, recenzji, sprawozdań i wywiadów, przyporządkowanych do kilku bloków tematycznych: Szkice i refl eksje, Sylwetki, Studia, Sztuka wykonawcza i kształcenie oraz Varia – wydarzenia, płyty, książki. Wszystkie teksty (poza działem Varia) są opatrzone biogramami autorów w języku polskim i angielskim. Artykuły recenzowane (zamieszczone w dziale Studia) zawierają streszczenia i słowa kluczowe w dwóch wersjach językowych. In contrast to its ‘brass’ colleague, however, the clarinet, an instrument which has a brighter sound and is no stranger to a folk band, is in a constantly dazzling dialogue with the piano, whose part is characterised by tart, dissonant harmonies.

    MIECZYSŁAW KOMINEK (Warszawa) From Kotoński to Duchnowski. Polish electroacoustic music ABSTRACT: Founded in November 1957, the Experimental Studio of Polish Radio (SEPR) was the fifth electronic music studio in Europe and the seventh in the world. It was an extraordinary phenomenon in the reality of the People’s Poland of those times, equally exceptional as the Warsaw Autumn International Festival of Contemporary Music, established around the same time - in 1956. Both these ‘institutions’ would be of fundamental significance for contemporary Polish music, and they would collabo­ rate closely with one another. But the history of Polish electroacoustic music would to a large extent be the history of the Experimental Studio. The first autonomous work for tape in Poland was Włodzimierz Kotoñski’s Etiuda konkretna (na jedno uderzenie w talerz) [Concrete study (for a single strike of a cymbal)], completed in November 1958. It was performed at the Warsaw Autumn in i960, and from then on electroacoustic music was a fixture at the festival, even a marker of the festival’s ‘modernity’, up to 2002 - the year when the last special ‘con­ cert of electroacoustic music’ appeared on the programme. In 2004, the SEPR ceased its activities, but thanks to computers, every composer can now have a studio at home. There are also thriving electroacoustic studios at music academies, with the Wroclaw studio to the fore, founded in 1998 by Stanisław Krupowicz, the leading light of which became Cezary Duchnowski. Also established in Wroclaw, in 2005, was the biennial International Festival of Electroacoustic Music ‘Música Electrónica Nova’. Krzysztof Knittel in conversation with Michal Libera and Michal Mendyk What was your knowledge about the Studio like, before you started working there? When starting, were you more interested in the broad idea of electroacoustic music, or the Polish Radio Experimental Studio itself? I owe my first encounter with the Polish Radio Experimental Studio to professor Krzysztof Szlifirski. Before studying composition, I have been granted a title of a Master of the Sound Design faculty, at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, Poland. Szlifirski taught electroacoustic music of the faculty, and used the infamous Black Room of the experimental studio as a classroom- those were my first experiences with sound effects achieved via changing the playback speed of tape recorders, filters and ring modulation. In other words, Szlifirski was teaching us all the methods used for music-making in the PRES. Some of this equipment was already familiar, due to the earlier lessons at the university, such as filters, delays, or echo chambers. Since my first encounters with the studio, PRES for me was an extended musical instrument, that allowed working with all the possibilities of electronic apparatus.
