Thanks to our Member's dues, a substantial contribution from our most generous member and contributions from a couple of local patriotic organizations, we will end the year financially sound and feeling confident that we will be able to make any emergency repairs and continue to make improvements to the Museum. As reported in previous Scuttlebutts, most of our major projects have been completed. Our upgraded security system with motion activated cameras inside the Museum and outside the shed John Cecil should be completed this month. The construction of a concrete structure for the mid-1600s British Admiralty Cannon should be completed early next year. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a New Year that is happy, healthy and prosperous. On this Christmas day let's all say a prayer for our troops that can't be home with families and loved ones. They are doing a great job of preventing the spread of terrorism and protecting our freedoms. Please say a prayer for their safe return home. On June 27, 1807, several thousand mourners assembled in Norfolk, Virginia, to witness Robert MacDonald’s internment. An ordi- nary mariner, MacDonald belonged to a class of maritime laborers, peo- ple who hoisted sails, stored cargoes, swabbed decks, and followed orders. Dead sailors normally rated scant attention and modest funerals when they died ashore, while death at sea meant burial over the side. -

ESPS CANARIAS home port is Rota Naval Base in the south of Spain. ESPS CANARIAS is fitted with a helicopter SH-60 and Marine Boarding Team that completes her capabilities and ensures she is capable of conducting the missions and tasks assigned by EUNAVFOR MED. The Santa Maria Class is a multirole warship able to carry out missions ranging from high intensity warfare integrated into a battle group and conducting offensive and defensive operations, to low intensity scenarios against non-conventional threats. Designed primarily to act in the interests of the State in the maritime areas overseas and participate in the settlement crises outside Europe, this leading warship can also be integrated into a naval air force. It may operate in support of an intervention force or protection of commercial traffic and perform special operations or humanitarian missions. The Santa Maria class frigates, like destroyers and corvettes, are given the generic name of escorts with the main task of protecting other units and maintaining sea lines of communications. However, their versatility allows the F-80 frigates to carry out a wide range of missions, which can be grouped into two broad categories: • Maritime Interdiction Operations: known as 'MIO operations', these consist of shipping control in a given area to ensure the maintenance of safe passage within any given restrictions or regulations as ruled by International Organisations. -

And so, it is no surprise that Alexandria was destined to become, at least for a time, a major seaport. Here, close to the Potomac’s headwaters, the river’s natural channel touched shore at two points. Between the two lay a crescent of bluffs, backed by abundant woods and fertile fields. Millennia before the town existed, grasslands bordered a much narrower Potomac, providing hunting and fishing grounds for the earliest Americans. Our timeline begins with a remarkable find in the summer of 2007. Prehistoric Alexandria Alexandria Archaeology Museum 11,000 B.C. In 2007 a broken spear point dating back an estimated 13,000 years is uncovered by archaeologists at a Civil War cemetery above Hunting Creek. The Clovis Point is Alexandria’s oldest artifact. Similar tools, also made of quartzite, have been found in Europe and antedate the Paleolithic period. Perhaps the first Europeans here were not who we thought they were. 9,000 B.C. Following the melting of the glaciers, sea levels rise and the Potomac River becomes much wider. Ancient spear points have been found at Jones Point where native Americans probably hunted deer and other mammals. 1,000 B.C. Charred hearthstones and bowl fragments indicate a more settled population. The river runs with shad and sturgeon. The tidelands provide rich soil for cultivation. At Jones Point in 1990 indications of a “village” are found. -

At the conclusion of this conflict, the geography, destiny and social structure of the newly-formed United States of America and Canada were forever and irrevocably altered. -

Glossary of Terms Below are new words for our Glossary of Terms based on AB Barlow’s activities the last couple of weeks. To see all the terms from AB Barlow’s past activities, please scroll down. Battle of Cape St. Vincent – one of the first battles of the Anglo-Spanish War (1796-1808). The battle was a decisive English victory and saw four Spanish ships of the line captured by the British; two by Horatio Nelson Battle of Flamborough Head – a battle fought during the American War of Independence during which Captain John Paul Jones captured the British frigate Serapis even as his own ship, Bonhomme Richard, sank out from under him Boarding – the act of sending sailors or soldiers from one’s own ship to an enemy ship for the purpose of capturing the other vessel. In modern context, boarding can also occur for more peaceful purposes such as a safety or customs inspection Brig – a ship with two masts, both carrying square sails. Also, a jail located on board a ship Cutting Out – the act of attacking a ship from small boats filled with sailors or marines. Often used as a surprise tactic Fighting Top – a platform part way up a ship’s mast used as a firing position by sharpshooters during a naval engagement First-Rate – the largest warships in the now-obsolete Royal Navy ranking system. Generally, first-rates mounted around 100 carriage guns Frigate – a small, fast warship; usually built for maneuverability and speed over firepower Gangway – traditionally, a narrow passage connecting a ship’s quarterdeck and forecastle.
