Is it wrapping paper and scissors on the ground? Griffin: [singing] Rachel makes fun of my mess, and that doesn‘t make me feel the best. But I still love her, despite how she makes me feel. Rachel: [laughs] I'm sorry. Griffin: This is Wonderful, a show where we talk about things we like, things we‘re into, like the current state of my office and its orderliness, which is not great. Uh, I may have wrapped some anniversary present up here. A big one. And I think I did a pretty bang-up job. I don‘t want to brag, but I—this is my small wonder. I'm gonna go ahead and hop right into it. I like wrapping presents. When you get that good fold over the corners… Rachel: Yeah. Griffin: Ohh my god. Rachel: That‘s really nice. Griffin: That‘s so satisfying. Rachel: I always think of this throwaway line from an episode of The Office, where Pam is talking about wrapping presents, and she says that you only should use three pieces of tape. And you can see how that‘s possible, and it is a goal to strive for. Griffin: I'm usually a fiver. You fold it all the way over length-wise, and then you only need one piece on the bottom. -

5-1 CHAPTERS MELODIC ASPECTS 5.1 Introduction Shostakovich's knowledge and understanding of the oboe and cor anglais are clearly reflected in the allocation of solo material throughout his 15 symphonies. 5.2 Allocation of solo material to the oboe Although the oboe is clearly not Shostakovich's favourite instrument, the solo material reveals a deft understanding of the instrument's technical and lyrical capabilities. Symphonies No.2, 11 and 13, however, have no solos for the oboe. The oboes are not used in Symphony No. 14 as it is scored for strings, percussion and soloists. As early as Symphony No. 1 Shostakovich establishes himself with insight as an orchestrator of oboe solos. A wide range of dynamic indications accompany the oboe solos, unlike the cor anglais whose predominantly allocated dynamic range is piano. Shostakovich writes very sympathetically for the player by not exhausting his stamina and by allowing sufficient rests in solo passages and avoiding long phrases. Solo passages are sometimes given to the second oboe and cor anglais in unison or in thirds, sixths or otherwise (see Ex. 5-5). Solo passages are also sometimes shared with other woodwind instruments. Oboe solos are generally approximately 8 bars long, although longer solos are found in Symphonies No.1, 4, 7 and 10 with 16 or more bars in length. The first movement of Symphony No.7 has the longest solo of 35 bars in which the bassoon and first oboe have solos in free imitation. Oboe solos are often supported by a characteristic tremolo string accompaniment, or by sustained strings or low woodwinds. -

Computational Modelling and Quantitative Analysis of Dynamics in Performed Music Katerina Kosta PhD thesis School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science Queen Mary University of London 2017 Abstract Musical dynamics|loudness and changes in loudness|forms one of the key aspects of ex- pressive music performance. Surprisingly this rather important research area has received little attention. A reason is the fact that while the concept of dynamics is related to signal amplitude, which is a low-level feature, the process of deriving perceived loudness from the signal is far from straightforward. This thesis advances the state of the art in the analysis of perceived loudness by modelling dynamic variations in expressive music performance and by studying the relation between dynamics in piano recordings and markings in the score. In particular, we show that dynamic changes: a) depend on the evolution of the performance and the local context of the piece; b) correspond to important score markings and music structures; and, c) can reflect wide divergences in performers' expressive strategies within and across pieces. In a preparatory stage, dynamic changes are obtained by linking existing music audio and score databases. All studies in this thesis are based on loudness levels extracted from 2000 recordings of 44 Mazurkas by Fr´ed´ericChopin. We propose a new method for efficiently aligning and annotating the data in score beat time representation, based on dynamic time warping applied to chroma features. Using the score-aligned recordings, we examine the relationship between loudness values and dynamic level categories. The research can be broadly categorised into two parts. -

Since that time, he has been a student of Dr. Marjorie Lee in Washington, DC for 9 years, and he is currently a student of Dr. Robert Roux at Shepherd School of Music, Rice University in Houston, Texas. His impressive list of credentials includes solo performances at Manhattan’s Steinway Hall, George Mason University’s Performing Arts Center Young Artists Series, the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, the Rising Star Concerts at The Alden, JoAnn Rose Gallery, New World Center in Miami, Harris Theater, and the McKenna and Studley Theatres in New Paltz, New York. In 2014, he won top prizes in the Rice University Piano Competition and in the Jacob Flier International Piano Competition, as well as first place in the Miami Summer Music Festival.
