A revision of the Japanese Eumenidae (Hymenoptera, Vespoidea). Ins. matsum. n. s. 43: 1-189, 7 tabs., 366 figs. The Japanese forms of Eumenidae are revised, and 54 species (77 forms in total) are recorded. The following five forms are described as new to science: Pararrhynchium oceanicum (Ogasawara Is.), P. o. miyanoi (Ogasawara Islands), 5ymmorphus carinatus (Shikoku), 5. iwatai (Honshu), and 5. tsushimanus (Tsushima Is.). New synonyms are: (5tenodynerus rufomaculatus kikaiensis Sk. Yamane) =5. rufomaculatus, (5. yambarah Sk. Yamane et Gusenleitner) =5. kusigematii, (Rhynchium haemorrhoidale samurayi Giordani Soika) =R. quinquecinctum fukaH, (Anterhynchium fIavomarginatum luctuosum Giordani Soika) =A. f. hanedai, (Ancistrocerus yamanei Giordani Soika) =A. oviventris, and (Eumenes samurayi rufescens Giordani Soika) =E. micado. Ancistrocerus parietinus is newly recorded from Japan and numerous new localities are presented for the known species. The original description of Euodynerus bicingulatus Giordani Soika well agrees with small specimens of male Anterhynchium flavomarginatum micado. The former is possibly a synonym of the latter. The eumenid fauna of Japan is characterized by many Palearctic, some Oriental and some endemic elements. But it lacks some of the genera widely distributed in the Palearctic region such as Pseudepipona, Antepipona, etc. On Sado-ga-shima and other islands located near the Japanese mainlands, the fauna is rather poor, with no endemic forms. Although the fauna is much poorer, the Izu Islands harbor one endemic form at subspecies level, 5tenodynerus tokyanus fIavoscutellatus. Of the 13 eumenid forms 50 far known from the Tsushima Islands, at least one is no doubt a Korean element (Eumenes punctatus), and two are apparently endemic (Anterhynchium flavomarginatum tsushimarum and 5ymmorphus tsushimanus). Two of the five species known to occur on the Ogasawara Islands are supposed to be native. Both are endemic and very peculiar in morphology and color pattern, and are each differentiated into two subspecies occurring in the Haha-jima and Chichi-jima group. The Ryukyu Eumenidae are composed of Palearctic, wide-ranging, endemic and Oriental elements. The Northern RyukyU5 are dominated by Palearctic and wide-ranging elements, the Central Ryukyus by wide-ranging and endemic elements, and the Southern Ryukyus by Oriental and wide­ ranging elements. The largest gap in species composition is found between Amami-oshima and Yaku-shima. Subspecies differentiation and regional convergence in color pattern among unrelated species are most remarkable in the Ryukyil. Islands. Author's address. In agroecosystems, pollination and control of crop pests provide benefits worth billions of dollars annually. Effective sampling and monitoring of these beneficial arthropods is essential for ensuring their short- and long-term viability and effectiveness. There are numerous methods available for sampling beneficial arthropods in a variety of habitats, and these methods can vary in efficiency and effectiveness. In this paper I review active and passive sampling methods for non-Apis bees and arthropod natural enemies of agricultural pests, including methods for sampling flying insects, arthropods on vegetation and in soil and litter environments, and estimation of predation and parasitism rates. The subfamily Cryptinae Kirby, 1837 is considered the largest group in the Ichneumonidae with more than 400 described genera including around 4500 species. The subfamily has a worldwide distribution and its members play a key role in the biological control as parasitoids of many important pests. The study provides a new and updated overview of the Slovakian ichneumonid fauna after 28 years. So far over 750 species of Ichneumonidae have been reported from Slovakia, including around 150 species in the subfamily Cryptinae. Our study presents a complete checklist of Cryptinae and adds 32 species to the Slovakian fauna. In Warsaw only 14 species have been recorded, which account for 33.3",, of the wasps of Mazovia. They include 7 solitary species (22.5% of the wasps of Mazovia) and 7 social species (63.6°0). In the areas subject to extremely high urban pressure, two social species are almost the only wasps. These ars V. (V.J vulgaris and V. ( V.) germanica. A zoogeographical analysis shows that the proportion of the species with large ranges increased in the town. Wasps occurring in urban green areas mostly include ubiquitous social species and solitary species without specific requirements for nest sites. INTRODUCTION The family of wasps have been studied by few workers in Poland. They mostly prepared faunal lists of wasps or inserted fragmentary data on them in general lists of the Aculeata of a given area. Relatively best known wasps are those living in western Poland, that is, in Silesia, due to the studies carried out by Dittrich [5], in Pomerania, due to the studies by Paul [15], and also in southern Poland, mostly in Little Poland and the Tatra mountains, due to the studies conducted by Wierzejski [22], Niezabitowski [13], Niesiołowski [12], and Drogoszewski [6—8]. The earliest data from Mazovia are given by Nasonov [11], who lists Vespidae from Warsaw and some near localities like Otwock and Gałachy.

Its identity was confirmed by morphological comparison and DNA extractions from herbarium specimens collected between 1914 and 1938. Results from the molecular phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that L. hostifolia belongs to the L. makinoana complex. In comparison with other members of the L. makinoana complex, the broadly ovate labellum, short dormancy period, and flowering from November to March are unique characteristics of L. hostifolia. Results from the molecular phylogenetic analyses also suggested that L. hostifolia has had a long-isolated history in the Bonin Archipelago and probably migrated from temperate East Asia.

    www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Local habitat conditions shaping the assemblages of vespid wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) in a post-agricultural landscape of the Kampinos National Park in Poland Katarzyna Szczepko 1*, Andrzej Kruk 2* & Bogdan Wiśniowski 3 The landscape of the Kampinos National Park (KPN), a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Poland, is a mosaic of habitats created by natural processes and human activities. However, ongoing abandonment of traditional management has led to the development of forest communities in formerly open areas. The aim of the study was to identify the local habitat conditions promoting the abundance and diversity of wasp species (Vespidae) in the post-agricultural landscape of KPN. A total of 52 samples of Vespidae caught per unit efort (CPUE) were collected across various habitats with diferent levels of soil humidity, bare ground and mosaicity. The highest numbers and greatest species richness of vespids were recorded in open habitats on semihydrogenic and dry soil, which provided nesting sites for hypergeic (nesting above the ground) and endogeic (ground nesting) wasps. Many solitary species that are hypergeic were signifcantly associated with old, abandoned wooden buildings. As vespids need resources to build and provision the nest, their communities were shaped not only by the nature of the habitat sampled but also by the mosaicity of the surrounding area. The highest abundance and species richness were recorded in samples from a heterogenous landscape, which provided a wider range of available resources in the vicinity of the nest. Our fndings have signifcant implications for the management of park landscapes: aforestation of open habitats, both human-induced and resulting from natural succession, and the removal of old abandoned wooden buildings may limit landscape mosaicity and thus decrease hymenopteran diversity.

    A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 Abstract For six years between 2003 and 2008, over 100 site visits were made to fifteen chalk grassland and chalk heath sites within the South Downs of Vice-county 14 (East Sussex). This produced a list of 227 bee and wasp species and revealed the comparative frequency of different species, the comparative richness of different sites and provided a basic insight into how many of the species interact with the South Downs at a site and landscape level. The study revealed that, in addition to the character of the semi-natural grasslands present, the bee and wasp fauna is also influenced by the more intensively-managed agricultural landscapes of the Downs, with many species taking advantage of blossoming hedge shrubs, flowery fallow fields, flowery arable field margins, flowering crops such as Rape, plus plants such as buttercups, thistles and dandelions within relatively improved pasture. Some very rare species were encountered, notably the bee Halictus eurygnathus Blüthgen which had not been seen in Britain since 1946. This was eventually recorded at seven sites and was associated with an abundance of Greater Knapweed. The very rare bees Anthophora retusa (Linnaeus) and Andrena niveata Friese were also observed foraging on several dates during their flight periods, providing a better insight into their ecology and conservation requirements.

We installed trap- nests made from internode tubes of bamboos and reeds in ten secondary deciduous broad-leaved stands of different ages of one to over 100 years after clear-cutting. Thirty-two species (eight families of Hymenoptera and one of Diptera) were obtained with the trap-nests: 20 host species and 12 of their natural enemies. The species richness of most families of hosts and natural enemies, except for Pompilidae, was higher in younger to middle-aged stands than in older ones over 70 years old. On the contrary, the family Pompilidae (spider wasps) proliferated in both young and old stands, with its relative abundance becoming greater with the increase in stand age.
