Washington, DC 20402-9328 ISBN O-1 6-042075-X Foreword on-indigenous species (NIS)-----those species found beyond their natural ranges—are part and parcel of the U.S. landscape. Many are highly beneficial. Almost all U.S. crops and domesticated animals, many sport fish and aquiculture species, numerous horticultural plants, and most biologicalN control organisms have origins outside the country. A large number of NIS, however, cause significant economic, environmental, and health damage. These harmful species are the focus of this study. The total number of harmful NIS and their cumulative impacts are creating a growing burden for the country. We cannot completely stop the tide of new harmful introductions. Perfect screening, detection, and control are technically impossible and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, the Federal and State policies designed to protect us from the worst species are not safeguarding our national interests in important areas. These conclusions have a number of policy implications. First, the Nation has no real national policy on harmful introductions; the current system is piecemeal, lacking adequate rigor and comprehensiveness. Second, many Federal and State statutes, regulations, and programs are not keeping pace with new and spreading non-indigenous pests. -

The most pervasive causes of bee species decline are to be found in the way our countryside has changed in the past 60 years. Intensification of grazing regimes, an increase in pesticide use, loss of biodiverse field margins and hedgerows, the trend towards sterile monoculture, insensitive development and the sprawl of towns and cities are the main factors in this. I agree with the need for a comprehensive Bee Action Plan led by the UK Government in order to counteract these causes of decline, as called for by Friends of the Earth. -

Dumfries & Galloway Wildlife Review Cover Image: Hedgehog by Keith Kirk. Keith is a former Dumfries & Galloway Council ranger and now helps to run Nocturnal Wildlife Tours based in Castle Douglas. The tours use a specially prepared night tours vehicle, complete with external mounted thermal camera and internal viewing screens. Each participant also has their own state- of-the-art thermal imaging device to use for the duration of the tour. This allows participants to detect animals as small as rabbits at up to 300 metres away or get close enough to see Badgers and Roe Deer going about their nightly routine without them knowing you’re there. Dipteron Band 2 (6) S.113-132 ISSN 1436-5596 Kiel,15.9.1999 New data for the tribes Milesiini and Xylotini (Diptera, Syrphidae) on the Balkan Peninsula [Neue Daten fur die Triben Milesiini und Xylotini (Diptera, Syrphidae) van der Balkanhalbinsel] Ante VUJIC (Novi Sad) & Vesna MILANKOV (Novi Sad) Abstract: Distributional data are presented for four species of the tribe Milesiini (genus Criorhina MEIGEN, 1822) and 13 species of four genera of the tribe Xylotini (Brachypalpoides HIPPA, 1978, Brachypalpus MACQUART, 1834, Chalcosyrphus CURRAN, 1925, Xylota MErGEN, 1822) occuring on the Balkan Peninsula. The species Criorhina ranunculi (PANZER, [1804]) is recorded on the Balkan Peninsula for the fIrst time. A speci• men of Chalcosyrphus valgus (GMELIN, 1790) from Dubasnica mountain (Serbia) presents the fust verifIed record of the species on the Balkan Peninsula. Previously published reports of Xylota coeruleiventris ZETTERSTEDT,1838 on the Peninsula actually belong to X. jakuto• rum BAGACHANOVA,1980. Brachypalpus laphriformis (FALLEN, 1816), B. valgus (PANZER, [1798]), Criorhina asilica (FALLEN, 1816), Xylota jakutorum and X. jlorum (FABRICIUS, 1805) have been collected for the fust time in Montenegro. The record of Brachypalpus val· gus from Verno mountain is the first for Greece. A key to genera and species of the tribe Xylotini on the Balkan Peninsula and illustrations of characteristic morphological features are presented. Den är rödlistad i Sverige men har under de senaste åren påträffats i flera nya områden. Även om stor pälsblomfluga är förbisedd råder ingen tvekan om att de områden där arten påträffas ofta har särskilda kvaliteter som är viktiga att uppmärksamma och bevara på landskapsnivå. -

BeeWalk Annual Report 2020 Richard Comont and Helen Dickinson BeeWalk Annual Report 2020 About BeeWalk BeeWalk is a standardised bumblebee-monitoring scheme active across Great Britain since 2008, and this report covers the period 2008–19. The scheme protocol involves volunteer BeeWalkers walking the same fixed route (a transect) at least once a month between March and October (inclusive). This covers the full flight period of the bumblebees, including emergence from overwintering and workers tailing off. Volunteers record the abundance of each bumblebee species seen in a 4 m x 4 m x 2 m ‘recording box’ in order to standardise between habitats and observers. It is run by Dr Richard Comont and Helen Dickinson of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust (BBCT). To contact the scheme organisers, please email [email protected]. Acknowledgements We are indebted to the volunteers and organisations past and present who have contributed data to the scheme or have helped recruit or train others in connection with it. Thanks must also go to all the individuals and organisations who allow or even actively promote access to their land for bumblebee recording. The list of 279 species of aculeate Hymenoptera from the Jizerské hory Mts and Frýdlant region is presented. Altogether 13 critically endangered species, 22 endangered species, and 27 vulnerable species of the Czech Republic were found. The findings of Andrena tarsata Nylander, 1848, Anoplius tenuicornis (Tournier, 1889), Anthocopa villosa (Schenck, 1853), Crabro lapponicus Zetterstedt, 1838, Crossocerus walkeri (Shuckard, 1837), Dryudella femoralis (Moscary, 1877), Evagetes alamannicus (Blüthgen, 1944), Hylaeus annulatus (Lin- naeus, 1758), H. gracilicornis (Morawitz, 1867), Passaloecus monilicornis Dahlbom, 1842, Sphecodes spinulosus Hagens, 1875, Lasioglossum subfulvicorne austriacum Ebmer, 1973, and Mimumesa beaumonti (Van Lith, 1949) are of high faunistic importance. Key words: Hymenoptera, Aculeata, Jizerské hory Mts, Frýdlant region, faunistics, biology ÚVOD Žahadloví blanokřídlí (Hymenoptera: Aculeata) patří mezi velmi početné a ekonomicky významné skupiny hmyzu. Patří k nim význační opylovači (včely – Apoidea) i predátoři (sršni a vosy – Vespidae). V poslední době se ukazuje i velký význam této skupiny pro indikaci kva- lity lokalit. Řada druhů je na území České republiky buď kriticky ohrožena vyhubením, nebo jsou již považovány za regionálně vymizelé (Straka 2005a, b, c). -
