Referee appointed for UEFA Cup final in Rotterdam

Portuguese referee Vítor Manuel Melo Pereira to handle Wednesday’s big match

UEFA has appointed the match officials for the final of the UEFA Cup between and BV Borussia to be played on Wednesday 8 May at the Stadion Feijenoord, alias ‘’ at 20.45 CET.

45-year-old Portuguese referee Vítor Manuel Melo Pereira has been selected to officiate at the final and his team will be completed by Carlos Manuel Ferreira Matos and Paulo Jorge Januario Leite Ribeiro, who will operate as Assistant Referees, plus Lucilio Cardoso Cortez Batista, who will act as Fourth Official.

Vítor Manuel Melo Pereira, a telecommunications expert from Lisbon, made his international debut at an Under-18 match between Italy and Bulgaria in Ischia during October 1992. His total of 78 international matches includes the Jamaica v and Germany v Mexico matches at the 1998 World Cup finals plus the Yugoslavia v Slovenia fixture and Italy’s games against Sweden and Romania at EURO 2000. He was also selected to referee last season’s UEFA Super Cup game in Monaco when UEFA Cup holders Liverpool FC beat FC Bayern München 3-2. He also shook hands with when the current BV coach was captain of the Europe team which took on Africa in Lisbon when the UEFA/CAF Meridian Project was launched with an all- match in January 1997.

This will be his second visit to De Kuip, having previously officiated at Feyenoord’s 3-0 victory over Olympique de during the 1999/2000 UEFA Champions League campaign. That has been his only contact with the Dutch club, whereas he has crossed paths with BV Borussia Dortmund more frequently on his European travels. He first met them in October 1997 when the German side recorded a 4-1 UEFA Champions League victory over AC Sparta Praha and returned to Dortmund in March 2000 when Galatasaray SK beat the Germans 2-0 on their way to UEFA Cup glory. During the current campaign, he officiated at Borussia Dortmund’s -less draw with FC Slovan Liberec in Prague in the first leg of the quarter-finals. His most recent appointment in UEFA club competitions was ’s thrilling 4-2 win against Liverpool FC in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
