This type of vessel carries cargoes of grain, coal and ore; operat­ ing between Lake Erie and Lake Superior ports. The Balitmore Clippers were fitted out by private owners, who were granted letters of marque by the government. This gave them the legal­ ity of private war vessels acting for the United States. The crews were paid on a percentage basis, from the sale of captured vessels. The ves­ sels on account of their speed and handiness were also used in the slave trade. ·

The Balitmore Clippers were fitted out by private owners, who were granted letters of marque by the government. This gave them the legal· ity of private war vessels acting for the United States. The crews were paid on a percentage basis, from the sale of captured vessels. The ves· sels on account of their speed and handiness were also used in the slave trade.·
