No. 2 Oregon Birds 45 2000 Oregon Listing Results Jamie Simmons, 1430 NW Terracegreen Place, Corvallis, OR, 97330, [email protected]

Sheer birder persistence and the power of the Internet were at least some of the factors that enabled several Oregon listers to set more than a typical number of records this year, including three new entries to the top ten Oregon year list and five new county year list records.

Notable Oregon listing milestones of 2000: • The latest to reach or pass 400 for their Oregon life list were Paul Sherrell and Rick Krabbe. • Three year 2000 Oregon year lists made the all-time top ten Oregon year lists. Tim Rodenkirk, Trent Bray, and Diane Pettey performed that feat. • The 200 county life list barrier was broken in Josephine County by Dennis Vroman, making it the last county to reach that milestone. New county life list highs were submitted for Benton, Clackamas, Curry, Grant, Jackson, Jefferson, Lake, Lincoln, Linn, Marion, Polk, Wasco, and Yamhill Counties. • County year list records were broken in Benton (Trent Bray), Clatsop (Todd Thornton), Coos (Tim Rodenkirk), Crook (Chuck Gates), and Lane (Don DeWitt) Counties. The previous county year list record was also exceeded in Lane County by Paul Sherrell. • The perseverance award goes to Wayne Weber of British Columbia who finally broke the Oregon life list threshold of 300 after 40 years of effort!

A big thank you to the almost 100 birders who submitted their listing numbers!

Totals marked with an asterisk (*) are previously submitted totals; no updated total was received this year. Only totals of 390 or more for the Oregon life list are carried through without an updated list. (Note: The state automatic carryover threshold will likely increase from the current 390 for the year 2001.) County totals are carried through from year to year only if they are still leading in a county. Names marked with (‡) symbol honor deceased birders.

Field Notes, Western Oregon, Winter 2000-2001 Ray Korpi, 12611 NE 99th St., Vancouver, WA 98682

The dry winter resulted in low water levels, which may have caused below-average reports of certain waterfowl and shorebird species. For instance, on Sauvie Island, I found fewer waterfowl and shorebirds (except Snow Geese) when I hiked on Rentenaar Rd. than I had in the previous eight years. The field across from the Pellet Plant never flooded, and the gulls were spread out much more than usual; again, I had the lowest CBC count of gulls that I have had at that location in the years I have counted there. Others reported similar conditions in places. The lack of severe storms made for less fallout of coastal species inland, though some species like kittiwakes seemed to be more abundant on the coast, and viewers certainly did find a variety of shearwaters this season.

I-7 Annual Meeting Field Trips

Malheur National Wildlife Refuge There may be a couple of trips leaving Burns, one starting from the south end and working north, and the other starting from the north end and working south. Either trip can be full of surprises at this time of year with the fall migrants moving through the area. The refuge and surrounding area is famous for vagrant and wandering warblers, although at first it may seem that every warbler spotted is an Audubon’s. Waterfowl and shorebirds should be abundant, along with a good mixture of gulls, terns, flycatchers, swallows, wrens, sparrows, and blackbirds. This is the right time of year for that rare jaeger, too. Both species of shrikes can also be found.

Idlewild Campground Idlewild is about 15 miles north of Burns in the Malheur National Forest. The area is at the head of Devine Canyon and situated in a Ponderosa Pine forest with willow and aspen riparian areas. The trip will be excellent for woodland species such as woodpeckers, nuthatches, and crossbills. Warblers may be using the riparian areas along Poison Creek while raptors are soaring along the rimrock.

Fields Fields is a small community (population 20?) on the east side between Steens Mountain and the Pueblo Mountains. It is famous for its cottonwood grove and pond that is the only green area for miles! It is a natural vagrant trap and another locale for surprises. It is virtually impossible to pass for any migrating or wandering songbird flying that route. Keep your eyes open for those rare eastern warblers.

Steens Mountain This fault-block mountain is one of the tallest peaks in Oregon. Its eastern face plummets nearly a full vertical mile to the Alvord Desert. Classic glacial cirques and valleys magnificently carve its western slope. The habitat varies greatly from sagebrush steppe on its lower slopes to alpine meadows at the summit. In between are meadows, aspen groves, and even a small pine grove. With the variety of habitat comes a variety of birds, augmented by spectacular scenery. Sparrows, sage thrashers, and blackbirds may be found along the lower stretches; woodpeckers, warblers, and vireos in the aspens; and pipits, horned larks, and finches near the top. We might get lucky with White-throated Swifts and Black Rosy-Finch.

Field trip leaders will include Ray Korpi, Paul Sullivan, Tim Janzen, and others.
