MSS 009 Hector Garcia Collection Hector Garcia was executive director of the Catholic Council on Community Relations, Diocese of Galveston-Houston, and an officer of Harris County PASO. The Harris County chapter of the Political Association of Spanish-Speaking Organizations (PASO) was formed in October 1961. Its purpose was to advocate on behalf of Mexican Americans. Its political activities included letter-writing campaigns, poll tax drives, bumper sticker brigades, telephone banks, and community get-out-the- vote rallies. PASO endorsed candidates supportive of Mexican American concerns. It took up issues of concern to Mexican Americans. It also advocated on behalf of Mexican Americans seeking jobs, and for Mexican American owned businesses. PASO produced such Mexican American political leaders as Leonel Castillo and Ben. T. Reyes. Hector Garcia was a member of PASO and its executive secretary of the Office of Community Relations. In the late 1970's, he was Executive Director of the Catholic Council on Community Relations for the Diocese of Galveston-Houston. The collection contains some materials related to some of his other interests outside of PASO including reports, correspondence, clippings about discrimination and the advancement of Mexican American; correspondence and notices of meetings and activities of PASO (Political Association of Spanish-Speaking Organizations of Harris County. -

AIAA Fellows The first 23 Fellows of the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences (I) were elected on 31 January 1934. They were: Joseph S. Ames, Karl Arnstein, Lyman J. Briggs, Charles H. Northrop, Arthur Nutt, Sylvanus Albert Reed, Holden C. Richardson, Igor I. Sikorsky, Charles F. Taylor, Theodore von Kármán, Fred Weick, Albert Zahm. Dr. von Kármán also had the distinction of being the first Fellow of the American Rocket Society (A) when it instituted the grade of Fellow member in 1949. The following year the ARS elected as Fellows: C.M. Bolster, Louis Dunn, G. Edward Pendray, Maurice J. Zucrow, and Fritz Zwicky. Fellows are persons of distinction in aeronautics or astronautics who have made notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology thereof. A special Fellow Grade Committee reviews Associate Fellow nominees from the membership and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors, which makes the final selections. Gemini & Apollo Astronaut, BGEN, USAF, Ret, Test Pilot, and Author Dies at 90 The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) is saddened to report the loss of space man Michael Collins BGEN, USAF, Ret., and NASA astronaut who has passed away on April 28, 2021 at the age of 90; he was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Pat and his son Michael and is survived by their daughters Kate and Ann and many grandchildren. Collins is best known for being one of the crew of Apollo 11, the first manned mission to land humans on the moon. Michael Collins was born in Rome, Italy on October 31, 1930. In 1952 he graduated from West Point (same class as future fellow astronaut, Ed White) with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He joined the U.S. Air Force and was assigned to the 21st Fighter-Bomber Wing at George AFB in California. He subsequently moved to Europe when they relocated to Chaumont-Semoutiers AFB in France. Once during a test flight, he was forced to eject from an F-86 after a fire started behind the cockpit; he was safely rescued and returned to Chaumont. He was accepted into the USAF Experimental Flight Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in California. In 1960 he became a member of Class 60C which included future astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Irwin, and Tom Stafford. His inspiration to become an astronaut was the Mercury Atlas 6 flight of John Glenn and with this inspiration, he applied to NASA. In 1963 he was selected in the third group of NASA astronauts. -

STORY | ASK MAGAZINE | 13 Plan,Train,and Fly: MISSION OPERATIONS FROM APOLLO TO SHUTTLE BY JOHN O'NEILL Intro Personnel at the Mission Operations Directorate at the Johnson Space Center are the final integrators of the planning and execution steps that must occur to get from mission definition and design to flight. Over the years, the technology of some of this essential work has changed, but the general principles and the dedication and skill of those doing it remain the same. A brief look at the history of planning, training, and flying—the three related functions within human space flight mission operations—will make some of the challenges clear and show how we met them in the past and how we meet them today. On NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Shuttle Landing Facility, the Shuttle Training Aircraft (STA) takes to the skies. The STA is a Grumman American Aviation–built Gulf Stream II jet that was modified to simulate an orbiter’s cockpit, motion and visual cues, and handling qualities. In flight, the STA duplicates the orbiter’s atmospheric descent trajectory from approximately 35,000 ft. altitude to landing on a runway. Because the orbiter is unpowered during reentry and landing, its high-speed glide must be perfectly executed the first time. Colonel Gordon Cooper, US Air Force Leroy Gordon
Colonel Gordon Cooper, U.S. Air Force Leroy Gordon "Gordo" Cooper Jr. was an American aerospace engineer, U.S. Air Force pilot, test pilot, and one of the seven original astronauts in Project Mercury, the first manned space program of the U.S. Cooper piloted the longest and final Mercury spaceflight in 1963. He was the first American to sleep in space during that 34-hour mission and was the last American to be launched alone to conduct an entirely solo orbital mission. In 1965, Cooper flew as Command Pilot of Gemini 5. Early life and education: Cooper was born on 6 March 1927 in Shawnee, OK to Leroy Gordon Cooper Sr. (Colonel, USAF, Ret.) and Hattie Lee Cooper. He was active in the Boy Scouts where he achieved its second highest rank, Life Scout. Cooper attended Jefferson Elementary School and Shawnee High School and was involved in football and track. He moved to Murray, KY about two months before graduating with his class in 1945 when his father, Leroy Cooper Sr., a World War I veteran, was called back into service. He graduated from Murray High School in 1945. Cooper married his first wife Trudy B. Olson (1927– 1994) in 1947. She was a Seattle native and flight instructor where he was training. Together, they had two daughters: Camala and Janita Lee. The couple divorced in 1971. Cooper married Suzan Taylor in 1972. Together, they had two daughters: Elizabeth and Colleen. The couple remained married until his death in 2004. After he learned that the Army and Navy flying schools were not taking any candidates the year he graduated from high school, he decided to enlist in the Marine Corps. -

No single space project in this period will be more exciting, or more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish …” President John F. Kennedy May 25, 1961 Celebrate Apollo Exploring The Moon, Discovering Earth Less than five months into his new administration, on May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy, announced the dramatic and ambitious goal of sending an American safely to the moon before the end of the decade. Coming just three weeks after Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space, Kennedy’s bold challenge that historic spring day set the nation on a journey unparalleled in human history. Just eight years later, on July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong stepped out of the lunar module, taking “one small step” in the Sea of Tranquility, thus achieving “one giant leap for mankind,” and demonstrating to the world that the collective will of the nation was strong enough to overcome any obstacle. It was an achievement that would be repeated five other times between 1969 and 1972. By the time the Apollo 17 mission ended, 12 astronauts had explored the surface of the moon, and the collective contributions of hundreds of thousands of engineers, scientists, astronauts and employees of NASA served to inspire our nation and the world. -
Our Finest Hour
Our Finest Hour I recently heard Al Roker say, “This year’s hurricane season has the potential to be one of the worst on record.” I’m sure it’s true, and thousands of people are now dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Laura, but it’s just not something I wanted to hear. It feels like one more thing – hashtag 2020. I won’t recount all of the reasons 2020 has been a difficult year. There are shared reasons we all have dealt with and individual reasons many will never know, but the bottom line is: 2020 has been hard. Even with all the challenges of this year, I am truly inspired by the resilience, heroism, and compassion I see from so many people. We need look no further than our very own healthcare facilities to be inspired by what people can do, not only in spite of incredible difficulty, but actually because of it. The way our colleagues have risen to the occasion is truly an example of the Power of One. We have seen how important it is to care for each other. This year makes me think of one of my favorite movies, Apollo 13. There’s a well- known scene where the NASA crew in Houston is waiting to find out if the astronauts are going to land safely or if they’re going to be lost forever to space. While they’re waiting, two men are talking, and one of them lists all the problems: “We got the parachute situation, the heat shield, the angle of the trajectory and the typhoon.” The other says, “This could be the worst disaster NASA’s ever experienced.” Standing nearby is Flight Director Gene Kranz, who delivers his famous line, “With all due respect sir, I believe this is going to be our finest hour.” I don’t know if we will look back at 2020 and call it our “finest hour.” It’s not a year many of us will remember fondly. -

TYPE OF APPROVAL REQUESTED: Archaeological Site Designation HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE SUMMARY Frost Town was first settled in 1836 and would become the first residential suburb of the City of Houston, then-Capitol of the new Republic of Texas. Frost Town was located in a bend on the south bank of Buffalo Bayou approximately ½ mile downriver from the present site of downtown Houston. The 15-acre site was purchased from Augustus and John Allen by Jonathan Benson Frost, a Tennessee native and a recent veteran of the Texas Revolution, who paid $1,500 ($100 per acre) for the land in April 1837. Frost built a house and blacksmith shop on the property, but died shortly after of cholera. His brother, Samuel M. Frost subdivided the 15 acres into eight blocks of 12 lots each, and began to sell lots on July 4, 1838.
