THURSDAY, JAN. 3,2013 Sentinel gmnews.com North Brunswick • South Brunswick Globe "Banking on trotters South Brunswick basketball blood donations program will host team Page 6 from India during January BY STELLA MORRISON Staff Writer asketball in South Brunswick is going international. B Ball-U-Man Athletics, a South Brunswick-based organization that encourages personal as well as athletic development in stu- dents through sports clinics, is hosting the Shri Ram School Phase 3 high school co-ed bas- ketball team from Jan. 1 to 11. Shri Ram is a co-educational private school in India. "We're bringing the team to the United States, and we're giving them the training and skills that they want to learn and put to use," said Radhika Ravi, who helped organize the international exchange program. Founded in 2009, Ball-U-Man has served students in South Brunswick and the sur- rounding communities. It gives those in the program an opportunity for growth and de- velopment. "Besides teaching basketball and rein- forcing skills of the sport, it also teaches self- esteem. The program emphasizes education, the No. 1 priority," Ravi said. Recently, the group hosted a basketball clinic in Austin, Texas, which encouraged coach Giovanni Shepherd to think globally. Shepherd and his wife Karen, along with Ravi and Ball-U-Man member Sangya Varma, partnered up to reach out to an Indian team to bring them to the United States. They estab- lished a connection with Pardeep Chauhan, a former basketball player in India, who had connections to the Shri Ram School team. "He was part of their basketball stock and played in the area at some point," Shepherd said. "He's familiar with their coach and their school system, and he made the connection to us through a parent involved in Ball-U-Man." During their stay, the team will participate in morning and evening training sessions. They will visit the Barclays Center in New York to see a game hosted by the Brooklyn Nets. The teammates will have an opportu- nity to high-five the players before the game. In addition, several games that Shepherd calls "friendly basketball matches" will be held between the Shri Ram School and other teams in the area. Between practices, the in- ternational athletes will be given an opportu- nity to sightsee in New York City and central Jl.fl- GKANII staff New Jersey. Egan said the school is truly grateful for the donations because of two reasons. "The first reason being that the first things that are cut from a school budget are from the arts. It's at a time when the econ- omy is not secure and the only thing we can do is buy supplies and repair what we have," Egan said. The second reason, he said, is that the school budget only allows for an electric guitar and possibly a bass guitar.
