CAAP Artist Lab Participants BIOGRAPHIES LENA CRUZ Lena is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Theatre highlights include her debut as Jenny in The Threepenny Opera for Western Australian Opera, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth for Bell Shakespeare, Mother Courage for Belvoir, Monkey- Journey to the West for Theatre of Image, Miss Bell in Fame, Hair, and creating the role of Cynthia in the original production of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert the Musical. Most recently, she has appeared in STC’s The Wharf Revue. Film and television highlights include starring as Rory Van Dyke in The Wannabes, Margarita in The Night We Called it A Day, Cassandra in Upskirt, Sofia Martinez in Shortland Street, Pet in Bargain Coast, Jody Lim in Dirt Game, Comedy Inc, Watch With Mother, All Saints, The Very Trevor Ashley Show, and Kiki and Kitty. She has co- written and co-starred in the cabarets The Singer’s Guide To The Universe, About Face, and one-woman shows I’m A Stranger Here Myself directed by Tony Sheldon and Bitter Sweet, for which she was nominated for the Sydney Fringe Festival Drum Media Show-Stopping Individual Performance Award and the Best Of People’s Choice Award. HAPPY FERAREN Happy Feraren is a Filipino actor and improviser based in Sydney with 11 years experience. She has performed in over 500 shows in a wide range of improvisational theatre formats both locally and internationally (including Manila, Sydney, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Chicago and New York). In the Philippines, she began as a presenter for national radio and television as well as live events and was a supporting actor in the feature film ‘My Candidate’. -

I examine how song and dance – sites of aesthetic difference within the musical – can warp time and enable marginalized and semi-marginalized fans to imagine different ways of being in the world. Musical numbers can complicate a linear, developmental plot by accelerating and decelerating time, foregrounding repetition and circularity, bringing the past to life and projecting into the future, and physicalizing dreams in a narratively open present. These excesses have the potential to contest naturalized constructions of historical, progressive time, as well as concordant constructions of gender, sexual, and racial identities. While the musical has historically been a rich source of identification for the stereotypical white gay male show queen, this project validates a broad and flexible range of non-normative readings. -

ZCH Audition Packet The Rocky Horror Picture Show by Richard O’Brien Directed by Alice Schroeder We are the home to the Twin Ports premiere Rocky Horror Picture Show shadow cast. Officially registered with The Rocky Horror Fan Club, we have joined the network of shadow casts that are performing all throughout the world. This will be our tenth year performing The Rocky Horror Picture Show in the Twin Ports. Experience the tradition. This Halloween, venture out at night and join us for a lip syncing extravaganza you'll never forget. Audition Information AUDITIONS: September 11, 2021, 1:00PM This is a general audition, no appointment necessary. Please feel free to arrive a few minutes early to get settled before the auditions begin at 1pm. LOCATION: NorShor Theatre Rehearsal Studios, 211 East Superior Street, 3rd floor. Please enter through the "Lights on Duluth" door on Superior St next to the Box Office. Then take the stairs or elevator up to the third floor (N3). The rehearsal studios are down the hall to the right. PREPARATION: Watch the movie. Be prepared to learn the Time Warp. If auditioning for a specific role, please prepare the song selection listed next to character names below. Please bring a résumé, headshot, and audition form to your audition. Due to the nature and content of the show, participants must be 18 years of age by the time of auditions! MASKS: Masks are currently required to be worn by everyone inside the Norshor. Actors will be allowed to remove their mask when they are in the act of performing. -

(Credit: Piquant Photo) Out Loud usually does serious theater, but The Rocky Horror Show is not intended to be taken seriously. When it first hit the London stage in 1973, it was an obscure production in a small attic performance space, about as far off-off-off-Broadway as possible, but it became a surprise must-see hit for everyone who had been anyone in Swinging London. The original company had artistic roots in the King’s Road proto-punk scene that a few years later would bring first-wave punk to public attention, giving birth to bands such as the Sex Pistols. Hurling itself against every sacred cow it could find, dressing male characters in high heels and corsets, the show reveled in flouting ’70s-era sexual taboos. It is a cult phenomenon that has been preserved in the library of congress due to its overwhelming success. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is both a horror movie and a musical. It also uses elements of comedy and sci-fi but we’ll focus on the main aspects: horror and musical. The Rocky Horror Picture Show tells the story of an engaged couple, Brad and Janet, who stumble upon a castle belonging to the eccentric Dr. Frank N. Furter who will give them a night they’ll never forget. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is one of the best-known musicals of all time thanks to the success of the film. -

Music Cameron Allan music conductor Chris Nichols Cameron Allan is an under-rated composer who began working during the Australian revival (and often working with Chris Nichols as conductor, though Nichols is credited as Nicolls on Jim Sharman's adaptation of Patrick White's The Night the Prowler). Allan was inclined to the "less is more" style of screen music, in contrast to say Brian May's notion of "more can never be enough, more please" style. Allan was also inclined to exotic instrumentation suggesting Asian influences. Both tendencies can be seen in his work for Stir, and it has a moderating influence on any tendency to drift towards melodrama. Ben Goldsmith made these astute comments on use of music in the film: The use of music … throughout the film is … noteworthy. Music is rare in the film, but it is used extremely effectively. It is heard for the first time at the end of this scene (the opening stylised sequence shot with a blue filter) providing a bridge to the title sequence that follows. Cameron Allan's score is minimalist in style, consisting solely of short repeated phrases, often only one or two notes, on pizzicato strings or piano, often accompanied by a variety of percussion instruments - chimes, wooden blocks, rattles - suggesting the characteristic soundscape of the institution: the ominous, oppressive rhythm of officers' footsteps along cell block corridors, bolts clanging, keys jangling, doors slamming, sirens wailing. It is not until the end credit sequence that the music comes anywhere near a pleasant melody, but even here the piano is hesitant, with notes allowed to reverberate as we contemplate the rioters' fate.
