Our Story The Florida Keys Scenic Highway (FKSH) corridor runs from Mile Marker 110, north of the spectacular Jewfish Creek Bridge, to Mile Marker 0 in Old Town Key West. The scenic highway corridor also extends five miles on each side of the highway. So, the FKSH truly encompasses all of the Florida Keys, its natural wonders, and its communities. Through efforts beginning in 1996 with numerous public meetings and workshops to create the Corridor Management Plan, the FDOT designated the FKSH a Florida Scenic Highway in 2001. In 2007, the Florida Keys Mission Statement Scenic Corridor Alliance (FKSCA) was To enhance the scenic image, preserve our established as the corridor management entity heritage and diversity, and promote the natural responsible for implementing the goals and beauty of the Florida Keys Scenic Corridor. objectives concerning the FKSH. The FKSCA completed its Corridor Management Plan Five- Year Update in fall of 2008 and applied for designation in the National Scenic Byways Program. The FKSCA proved our highway corridor meets the designation criteria of being considered a “destination unto itself” and “providing an exceptional travel experience.” Our scenic and recreational intrinsic qualities “are those which best represent the nation, are nationally recognized, and contain one-of-a- kind features that do not exist elsewhere.” The Florida Keys Scenic Highway is a natural fit. • Winning an Unfair Game How a Resource-Constrained Player Uses
WINNING AN UNFAIR GAME: HOW A RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED PLAYER USES BRICOLAGE TO MANEUVER FOR ADVANTAGE IN A HIGHLY INSTITUTIONALIZED FIELD Ted Baker, Timothy G. Pollock and Harry J. Sapienza ABSTRACT In this study we examine how resource-constrained organizations can maneuver for competitive advantage in highly institutionalized fields. Unlike studies of institutional entrepreneurship, we investigate competi- tive maneuvering by an organization that is unable to alter either the regulative or normative institutions that characterize its field. Using the ‘‘Moneyball’’ phenomenon and recent changes in Major League Baseball as the basis for an intensive case study of entrepreneurial actions taken by the Oakland A’s, we found that the A’s were able to maneuver for advantage by using bricolage and refusing to enact baseball’s cognitive institutions, and that they continued succeeding despite ongoing resource Entrepreneurial Resourcefulness: Competing with Constraints Advances in Entrepreneurship, Firm Emergence and Growth, Volume 15, 1–41 Copyright r 2013 by Emerald Group Publishing Limited All rights of reproduction in any form reserved ISSN: 1074-7540/doi:10.1108/S1074-7540(2013)0000015004 1 2 TED BAKER ET AL. constraints and rapid copying of their actions by other teams. These results contribute to our understanding of competitive maneuvering and change in institutionalized fields. Our findings expand the positioning of bricolage beyond its prior characterization as a tool used primarily by peripheral organizations in less institutionalized fields; our study suggests that bricolage may aid resource constrained participants (including the majority of entrepreneurial firms) to survive in a wider range of circumstances than previously believed. Keywords: Bricolage; Major League Baseball; institutionalized fields; resource-constraints; competitive advantage Images of institutionalized organizational fields evoke expectations of stability and behavioral constraint structured by rules, accepted ways of doing things, and common ways of looking at the world.

  • Legal Education and Moneyball: the Art of Winning the Assessment Game
Legal Education and Moneyball: The Art of Winning the Assessment Game JEREMY POTTER' I. INTRODUCTION Legal education is woefully deficient in the use of data to measure the quality of a law school. In the 1950s educators believed legal education had "two related objectives-the training of lawyers, and the improvement of the law."' These men went on to write that "[t]he latter objective in particular requires not merely that poor law schools be eliminated but that the best law schools be made better."2 While those objectives remain true, legal educators are no longer calling for the closing of poor law schools. One possible reason is the legal profession is unaware which the poor law schools might be. Measuring education, particularly legal education, is difficult. The American Bar Association ("ABA") uses published standards, site visits and accreditation to certify which law schools pass the minimum criteria, but few agencies, if any at all, are using objective metrics to measure the quality of legal education beyond these minimums. Outcome measures and assessments are the tools educators employ to try to measure student proficiency and the quality of education provided by an institution. For example, elementary and secondary educators rely on standardized tests and course grades as a major measure of quality. Even as educators become more sophisticated in understanding educational quality, the nature of education makes objectivity a problem. Legal education has additional challenges because beyond the usual difficulty in educational assessment law students are pursuing diverse careers and require a wide range of intangible skills to achieve proficiency.

Performance, Privacy, and the Professional: The Proliferation of Data Analytics in Athletics An STS Research Paper presented to the faculty of the School of Engineering and Applied Science University of Virginia by Sarah Nelson May 7, 2020 On my honor as a University student, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this assignment as defined by the Honor Guidelines for Thesis-Related Assignments. Signed: _________________________________________________ Approved: _______________________________________ Date ________________________ Peter Norton, Department of Engineering and Society 1 Performance, Privacy, and the Professional: The Proliferation of Data Analytics in Athletics The explosion of data has transformed many industries. Healthcare, banking, retail, manufacturing, and technology are among the domains impacted by data analytics. Athletics, in particular, has been reshaped by recent technology advancements. Ramon Alonso, holder of the sports telemetry system patent, says that the “gathering, processing, and use of data and statistics are an important aspect of the business, analysis, and appreciation of sports” (Alonso, 2012). The publication of the book Moneyball (Lewis, 2003) sparked a new national appreciation for sports analytics, evident in “Fantasy” leagues, sports betting, and commercial sensors such as Fitbit. Fantasy leagues had a total revenue in 2018 of 7.7 billion dollars, with an annual growth rate of 8 percent over the previous five years (Gambardella, 2018). As for personal health trackers, FitBit posted a 1.51 billion dollar revenue in 2018 (FitBit, 2019), and the Apple Watch posted 5.1 billion dollars in revenue (Miller, 2019). People are more concerned with data than ever, whether it be box statistics for sports betting or biometric data for personal improvement.

Coaching Articles : Eric Musselman File For Coaches Jackson makes Hall of Fame on principle By Roscoe Nance, USA TODAY Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson heads the 2007 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class, which will be inducted Saturday in Springfield, Mass. The group includes University of North Carolina men's coach Roy Williams, Louisiana State University women's coach Van Chancellor, the 1966 Texas Western University men's team, referee Marvin "Mendy" Rudolph and international coaches Pedro Ferrandiz of Spain and Mirko Novosel of Yugoslavia. Jackson, 61, has won nine NBA championships as a coach — six with the Chicago Bulls and three with the Lakers — tying Hall of Famer Red Auerbach's record. He has coached some of the NBA's greatest players, including Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen with the Bulls and Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal with the Lakers. Jackson gets players to buy into his coaching philosophy, which is influenced by Native American and Eastern beliefs. "The great thing about Phil is the way he has handled players," Hall of Famer Magic Johnson said. "He has a different style, too, that old Zen thing. I love him because he never gets too high and never gets too low and always wants to help the guys grow as men. He teaches them basketball and also teaches them outside the sport." One of his more renowned strategies is handing out books for players to read during road trips. "He's trying to get players to see that there's more to life than the NBA and your performance today," said NBA TV analyst Steve "Snapper" Jones.
