Castanets/Dirty Projectors Unusual Animals, Vol. 2 ARTIST: Castanets / Dirty Projectors 1 TITLE: Unusual Animals Vol. 2 LABEL: Asthmatic Kitty Records CATALOG#: AKR402 RELEASE DATE: March 6, 2007 FORMAT: 10” FULL 12-DIGIT: 656605640211 BOXLOT: 50 56605 64021 FILE UNDER: Indie/experimental EXPORT RESTRICTIONS: None 6 CASTANETS/DIRTY PROJECTORS UNUSUAL ANIMALS, VOL. 2 After a deep idiosyncratic investigation of electronic music and classical orchestration on The Getty Address and the New Attitude EP, Dave Longstreth turns to the live band as his compositional tool with the nine-minute epic "Silence in the Land." The centerpiece of the band's set on their Spring 2006 tour, the song was recorded live with no overdubs in Aaron Snow's (Landing) attic on a stop during the tour. The band is Dave Longstreth (twelve-string guitar and singing), Nat Baldwin (electric bass), Alex Farrill (syndrums and singing), Will Glass (drums), and Spencer Kingman (guitar and singing). Castanets offer up a bloody and muddy dubbed-out blues track, penned while on their epic and catastrophic sailboat tour with Jana Hunter and Peter & the Wolf in the Summer of 2006, and recorded upon the first day of final harbor. The sound is like a water-logged and drunk Fennesz covering Willie Nelson and features Vanishing Voice veteran G. Lucas Crane, as well as brief appearance by flipside's Dave Longstreth of Dirty Projectors. The guitar loop at the end echoes the distant buoy sounds that haunted the wayfaring boaters on the late nights. This is the second in a series of vinyl-only releases. The series, entitled Unusual Animals, pairs Asthmatic Kitty roster artists with friends and sometimes-unlikely bedfellows. Each record includes a beautiful rendering of one of Mother Nature's stranger inhabitants by illustrator Jared Chapman. This limited-edition series expands the Asthmatic Kitty family to include some unexpected folks. Critics on Castanets: "The more Castanets reveals itself, the less disparate listening experiences look like slippages, and the more they appear to be distant points in a vast but fully-formed constellation." –Bandoppler A fusion of electronica and Americana wrought from the violence and loss inherent to a nation's creation. - The Wire On Dirty Projectors: "One of the strongest avant-garde bands in New York." —New York Times "Dirty Projectors' music is weird, even for Brooklyn experimental music." —NY Press Selling Points - Castanets and Dirty Projectors both have much anticipated full-lengths out in 2007 - Limited Edition 10" Vinyl (limited to 1000 copies) - Both Castanets and Dirty Projectors have just come off and will resume extensive U.S. Touring - Selective radio and press servicing Asthmatic Kitty Records P.O. Rating: 8/10 | Genres: Indie Rock, Indie Pop. Review: "Father of the Bride" contains a masterpiece scattered around its 18 songs, quite few of them under 2 minutes and also few over 4. This is a rich record filled with things to listen to. Its genius is that it sounds content, like a victorious rallying cry among the band's most eclectic and pleasing sound yet, but still it hides Koenig's uncertainty and desperation. It is almost self-deprecating in a way. Now a grown house-man of sorts, Koenig woke up from the numbness of marriage and realizes he "got married in a gold rush".

  • Nytt Album Fra Dirty Projectors – "Lamp Lit Prose" Ute 13. Juli
STREAM FØRSTE SINGEL "BREAK-THRU" HER SE MUSIKKVIDEOEN TIL "BREAK-THRU" HER "Lamp Lit Prose" kommer til verden litt over et år etter at bandet slapp sitt selvtitulerte "Dirty Projectors" i 2017.

  • Maximum Black Festival Background
PRESS RELEASE Maximum Black Festival Final Fantasy Six Organs of Admittance Dirty Projectors Frog Eyes 29.02.2008 London THE FORUM Owen Pallett, singer/songwriter and head of Canadian band Final Fantasy will both curate and headline the Maximum Black Festival in London, Berlin and Vienna in February/March 2008. On stage he will be joined by friends of the calibre of Deerhoof, Six Organs of Admittance, Dirty Projectors and Frog Eyes. The name, Maximum Black , is derived from a song by the German band Bohren & The Club of Gore, of whom Owen is a great fan. The Maximum Black festival will be 100% funded by the Vienna Public Utility company. This cooperation, however, is not a product of planned negotiations, but a result of extraordinary circumstances. Background The Vienna Public Utility Company had commissioned an international advertising agency to realize a new image campaign for them. The advertising company got in contact with Final Fantasy about using their song “This is the song of Win & Regine” as background music to a video campaign, but band and team had decided not to licence their music for commercial purposes due to bad experiences in the past. As a result the advertising company decided to ask another artist to write a song which turned out to be a nearly identical cover of Final Fantasy’s original, and proceeded to use it for their campaign. This plagiarism was not kept a secret for a long time. An impending law suit did not suit the interests of both Final Fantasy and the Viennese company, and so they both agreed to compromise: Final Fantasy, i.e.

It’s been another fun year at CD Central! Certainly one filled with ups and downs (thinking about the Limestone road project here) but the bottom line is we’ve enjoyed bringing some great music to Lexington, both live and on disc. This booklet is our annual recap of some of the year’s brightest musical highlights. One of the great things we can look back at this year is our participation in Local First Lexington. All of the members of LFL are locally-owned, independent businesses who do great things for our community. These are the businesses that make Lexington a unique place among a sea of national chain stores. Please make it one of your New Year’s resolutions to “Think Local First” when making your buying decisions in the coming year. It feels good to shop local and it makes Lexington a better place.

  • The Bass Player Interviews
Hey Kidz, 20 years ago I started my zine QRD to interview the musicians I loved that weren’t getting asked the questions I wanted to see them answer. Hard to believe I’m still going strong. Four years ago I started a series of interviews with guitar players about their craft & it naturally led to asking some bass players the same basic questions. But bass players are an elusive bunch without big egos & consequently this series didn’t take off in quite the same way. Still there is plenty you can learn from these interviews about the secrets of the often understated connection between the guitar & drums & you can become more informed on the eternal question of, “Is a bass just a guitar lower in pitch?” Hrt Brian John Mitchell QRD Bass Player Interviews CJ Boyd................................................................... 4 Monte Allen of Rollerball & Moodring................ 27 Nicholas Slaton of slicnaton ................................. 39 Trevor Dunn of Fantomas..................................... 50 Jeffrey Roden........................................................ 62 Phillip Palmer of Port City Music......................... 75 Nat Baldwin of Dirty Projectors ........................... 88 Frank Alexander of Triplicity ............................. 102 Brian Preston....................................................... 129 Jason Ajemian..................................................... 141 Darin DePaolo of Unspeakable Forces............... 152 Jill Palumbo of The Torches............................... 162 Jon Case of Irata.................................................

  • The Music Video: from Popular Music to Film and Digital Media
MUSC 499: The Music Video: From Popular Music to Film and Digital Media University of Southern California, Spring 2014 Wednesdays, 6:00pm-9pm THH 202 Instructor: Dr. Richard Brown [email protected] www.richardhbrownjr.com Course Description: Since its emergence in the late 1970s, the music video has become the dominant means of advertising popular music and musicians, as well as one of the most influential multimedia genres in history. Music videos have affected aesthetic style in a wide range of film and television genres, introducing experimental and avant-garde techniques to a mass audience. Because most music videos last only a few minutes, it is difficult to make sense of their often-conflicting images, sounds, and messages. This course challenges participants to read music videos as texts by engaging with their visual and auditory materials. We will explore how the gender, race, and class of video participants shapes meaning, as well as how pacing and editing contribute to (or detract from) a narrative flow. We will also consider the music video in relation to notions of stardom and celebrity, and will speculate on the future of the music video amid drastic changes in the production and marketing of media. The second portion of the course applies these analytical skills to a wide variety of media, including video games, live concert films, film and television music placements, television title sequences and end credits, user generated content, YouTube, remixes and more. Course Materials: There is one required textbook available for free via USC’s electronic Ebook access: Carol Vernallis’ Experiencing Music Video: Aesthetics and Cultural Context (New York: Columbia University Press, 2004).
