The centerpiece of the band's set on their Spring 2006 tour, the song was recorded live with no overdubs in Aaron Snow's (Landing) attic on a stop during the tour. The band is Dave Longstreth (twelve-string guitar and singing), Nat Baldwin (electric bass), Alex Farrill (syndrums and singing), Will Glass (drums), and Spencer Kingman (guitar and singing). Castanets offer up a bloody and muddy dubbed-out blues track, penned while on their epic and catastrophic sailboat tour with Jana Hunter and Peter & the Wolf in the Summer of 2006, and recorded upon the first day of final harbor. The sound is like a water-logged and drunk Fennesz covering Willie Nelson and features Vanishing Voice veteran G. Lucas Crane, as well as brief appearance by flipside's Dave Longstreth of Dirty Projectors. The guitar loop at the end echoes the distant buoy sounds that haunted the wayfaring boaters on the late nights. This is the second in a series of vinyl-only releases. The series, entitled Unusual Animals, pairs Asthmatic Kitty roster artists with friends and sometimes-unlikely bedfellows. Each record includes a beautiful rendering of one of Mother Nature's stranger inhabitants by illustrator Jared Chapman. This limited-edition series expands the Asthmatic Kitty family to include some unexpected folks.
