ARTIST: Castanets / Dirty Projectors 1 TITLE: Unusual Animals Vol. 2 LABEL: Asthmatic Kitty Records CATALOG#: AKR402 RELEASE DATE: March 6, 2007 FORMAT: 10” FULL 12-DIGIT: 656605640211 BOXLOT: 50 56605 64021 FILE UNDER: Indie/experimental EXPORT RESTRICTIONS: None 6 CASTANETS/DIRTY PROJECTORS UNUSUAL ANIMALS, VOL. 2 After a deep idiosyncratic investigation of electronic music and classical orchestration on The Getty Address and the New Attitude EP, Dave Longstreth turns to the live band as his compositional tool with the nine-minute epic "Silence in the Land." The centerpiece of the band's set on their Spring 2006 tour, the song was recorded live with no overdubs in Aaron Snow's (Landing) attic on a stop during the tour. The band is Dave Longstreth (twelve-string guitar and singing), Nat Baldwin (electric bass), Alex Farrill (syndrums and singing), Will Glass (drums), and Spencer Kingman (guitar and singing). Castanets offer up a bloody and muddy dubbed-out blues track, penned while on their epic and catastrophic sailboat tour with Jana Hunter and Peter & the Wolf in the Summer of 2006, and recorded upon the first day of final harbor. The sound is like a water-logged and drunk Fennesz covering Willie Nelson and features Vanishing Voice veteran G. Lucas Crane, as well as brief appearance by flipside's Dave Longstreth of Dirty Projectors. The guitar loop at the end echoes the distant buoy sounds that haunted the wayfaring boaters on the late nights. This is the second in a series of vinyl-only releases. The series, entitled Unusual Animals, pairs Asthmatic Kitty roster artists with friends and sometimes-unlikely bedfellows. Each record includes a beautiful rendering of one of Mother Nature's stranger inhabitants by illustrator Jared Chapman. This limited-edition series expands the Asthmatic Kitty family to include some unexpected folks. Critics on Castanets: "The more Castanets reveals itself, the less disparate listening experiences look like slippages, and the more they appear to be distant points in a vast but fully-formed constellation." –Bandoppler A fusion of electronica and Americana wrought from the violence and loss inherent to a nation's creation. - The Wire On Dirty Projectors: "One of the strongest avant-garde bands in New York." —New York Times "Dirty Projectors' music is weird, even for Brooklyn experimental music." —NY Press Selling Points - Castanets and Dirty Projectors both have much anticipated full-lengths out in 2007 - Limited Edition 10" Vinyl (limited to 1000 copies) - Both Castanets and Dirty Projectors have just come off and will resume extensive U.S. Touring - Selective radio and press servicing Asthmatic Kitty Records P.O.
