Printed in Europe13 not far from some of the bouncing priests. 1 Cooper: A craftsman who makes and repairs wooden vessels formed of staves and hoops, as casks, buckets, tubs. (OED, p.421) The London street cry ‘Hay any work for cooper’ provided Martin with a pun on Thomas Cooper's surname, which Martin expands on in the next two paragraphs with references to hubs’, ‘barrelling up’, ‘tub-trimmer’, ‘hoops’, ‘leaking tubs’, etc. 2 Hub: The central solid part of a wheel; the nave. (OED, p.993) 3 A commodity commonly ‘barrelled-up’ in Elizabethan England was herring, which probably explains Martin's reference to ‘smelling in the nostrils of her Majesty and the state’. -

My research examines the selected poems for their reimagination of the sacred perceived through attachments to particular places. For these writers, poetry is a constitutive practice, part of a way of life that includes desire for wise participation in the more-than-human community. Taking into account the poets’ critical reflections and historical-cultural contexts, along with a range of critical and philosophical sources, the poetry is examined as a discursive spiritual exercise. It is seen as conjoined with other focal practices of place, notably meditative walking and attentive looking and listening under the influence of ecospiritual eros. -

The Science of Writing Introduction In 1967 the French philosopher, Jacques Derrida, published in book form a collection of texts he had been composing, under the title De la Grammatologie, Of Grammatology.1 The book was translated into English in 1974 by Gayatri Spivak and, with its one-hundred-page translator’s introduction, constituted the first major introduction to Derrida for English-speaking audiences. In 1985 an American professor of English Literature, Gregory Ulmer, published his engagement with Derrida under the title, Applied Grammatology: Post(e) Pedagogy from Jacques Derrida to Joseph Beuys.2 Ulmer’s investigation is one of the very few instances where Derrida’s mention of ‘grammatology’ is taken up at length. In July 2008, at the Derrida Today conference held at the University of Sydney, in Australia, the French Derrida scholar, Catherine Malabou, presented a key note address that probed the fate of Derrida’s notion of ‘grammatology’ and how its question might be re-engaged or re-invented today.3 By ‘grammatology,’ Derrida inferred a ‘science of writing,’ though an approach to the question of writing that radically engages with the question of science, of truth and of knowing. And if Ulmer activates the question posed by grammatology, it is in order to question a scene of teaching the radically questions writing as such. This paper aims at asking if the work of Derrida and Ulmer has continued relevance for a radicalising of the scene of teaching precisely by a critical engagement with what we commonly name as writing and what we commonly understand as its agency. -

PROTESTANTS READING CATHOLICISM: CRASHAW’S REFORMED READERSHIP by ANDREW D. DAVIS Under the direction of Dr. Paul Voss ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to realign Richard Crashaw’s aesthetic orientation with a broadly conceptualized genre of seventeenth-century devotional, or meditative, poetry. This realignment clarifies Crashaw’s worth as a poet within the Renaissance canon and helps to dismantle historicist and New Historicist readings that characterize him as a literary anomaly. The methodology consists of an expanded definition of meditative poetry, based primarily on Louis Martz’s original interpretation, followed by a series of close readings executed to show continuity between Crashaw and his contemporaries, not discordance. The thesis concludes by expanding the genre of seventeenth-century devotional poetry to include Edward Taylor, who despite his Puritanism, also exemplifies many of the same generic attributes as Crashaw. Comparative Research on Oral Traditions: a Memorial for Milman Parry

Columbus, Ohio: Slavica Publishers, 1987. 597 pages. Hardcover US$29.95. ISBN 0-89357-173-3. As every folklorist knows, the co-founders of the modern study of oral poetry are the classicist M ilman Parry and his student, the slavicist Albert Lord. Lord has had his festschrift: Oral Traditional Literature: A Festschrift for Albert Bates Lord, ed. John Miles Foley (1981). The prolific editor of that work has also given us the standard bibliography_ Oral-Formulaic Theory and Research: An Introduction and Annotated Bibliography (1984)_as well as a welcome history~The Theory of Oral Composition: History and Methodology (1988)— of the Parry-Lord theory and its in fluence. Now Foley has produced a memorial festschrift for Parry, who died in 1935. The work starts off with a preface by Albert Lord, a pleasantly anecdotal re flection on Parry’s life and influence. It is followed by the editor’s somewhat con fusing introduction. According to Foley, “ Parry’s activity in the field . • initiated the comparative method in oral literature research ” (18). Foley goes on to say that “ Africa, with its plethora of tongues and traditions, is beginning to yield startling new information about oral tradition and culture, while some of the most ancient civi lization of the world, among them the Indie, Sumerian, and Hittite, also show signs of oral transmission of tales,” and he concludes these thoughts with the assertion that “ [t]his enormous field of research and scholarship, still in its relative infancy, is ul timately the bequest of M ilm an Parry ” (19). -

It was intended in part to glorify Freemasonry as a new Emperor, more hostile to the Masons, took his office. After a brief survey of his life and works, this paper shows how Mozart used number symbolism in the opera, and will equip the reader with an understanding of this as practiced by the Freemasons. Further, it will show how Mozart associated the characters of the opera with specific musical tones. It will expose a deeper understanding of the question of meaning in word and text in his opera.
