Ulmer Major: English Since the rise of ubiquitous computing (ubicomp), a growing contingency of scholars from various fields have all attested to the need for new critical categories to help us understand the ways in which digital data now interlocks with physical space. Responding to this need, I propose five rhetorical figures specific to ubicomp interfaces, and, on the basis of these figures, attempt to outline a whole new class of media emerging at the margins of social, mobile, and locative media. For instance, GPS navigation devices are mobile and locative, but these qualities do not begin to account for the technology’s most radical affordance: the capacity to sync with (i.e., generate multimedia in response to) the actions of human and environmental actants in real-time. My term for this emerging set of technologies and techniques is actionable media. Drawing on the military phrase “actionable intelligence,” actionable media describes the compelling ways media can be designed to hinge upon what we are doing while we are doing it. In more theoretical terms, drawing on Bernard Stiegler’s notion of grammatization, actionable media concerns the modalities by which the flux of the Web gets broken down into gramme for acting upon in real-time, as well as the processes by which media break down the continuous movements of actant-networks into networked 7 gramme. Taking GPS navigation, RFID tags, and AR browsers as paradigmatic examples of actionable media, I ask how we might extrapolate from these commonplace scenarios to imagine further possibilities for digital writing and audiovisual media that fully exploit the features of ubicomp platforms. Throughout the work, I comment specifically on actionable media practices implicit in innovative projects done by digital artists, writers, and cultural institutions around the world. Ultimately, I argue that the value of ubicomp projects coincides with their potential to perform in the capacity of actionable media. That is, while the technical phenomena associated with mobile devices, geoinformation, and digital-physical convergence are often astonishing at first glance; the historical worth of these basic mechanics will have been measured by the advent of compelling cultural practices that we are just beginning to glimpse. 8 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION For media theorists and technologists, “ubiquitous computing” marks the paradigmatic horizon of current innovations in mobile media, locative networks, wearable devices, augmented reality, and smart objects. As an umbrella term, ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) typically signifies the onset a third wave in the history of the modern computer. Ubiquitous systems promise to break from the PC era and the models of computing that defined it, creating as many new possibilities and new problems as the shift from mainframe computers to PCs initiated during the 1980s. By virtue of this pending transition, the Internet is also said to be entering a third stage often referred to as Web 3.0. Commentators who forecast this scenario—which many people are already starting to experience—claim that the Web will be all around us, always on and accessible via smartphones, tablets, televisions, cars, and many other everyday items. No humanities scholar can deny the profound changes undergone in the study of writing, rhetoric, and media in the wake of personal computing and Web 2.0. In the midst of societies characterized by permanent technological innovation, many leading scholars are variously engaged in building theories of the present.     The Science of Writing Introduction In 1967 the French philosopher, Jacques Derrida, published in book form a collection of texts he had been composing, under the title De la Grammatologie, Of Grammatology.1 The book was translated into English in 1974 by Gayatri Spivak and, with its one-hundred-page translator’s introduction, constituted the first major introduction to Derrida for English-speaking audiences. In 1985 an American professor of English Literature, Gregory Ulmer, published his engagement with Derrida under the title, Applied Grammatology: Post(e) Pedagogy from Jacques Derrida to Joseph Beuys.2 Ulmer’s investigation is one of the very few instances where Derrida’s mention of ‘grammatology’ is taken up at length. In July 2008, at the Derrida Today conference held at the University of Sydney, in Australia, the French Derrida scholar, Catherine Malabou, presented a key note address that probed the fate of Derrida’s notion of ‘grammatology’ and how its question might be re-engaged or re-invented today.3 By ‘grammatology,’ Derrida inferred a ‘science of writing,’ though an approach to the question of writing that radically engages with the question of science, of truth and of knowing. And if Ulmer activates the question posed by grammatology, it is in order to question a scene of teaching the radically questions writing as such. This paper aims at asking if the work of Derrida and Ulmer has continued relevance for a radicalising of the scene of teaching precisely by a critical engagement with what we commonly name as writing and what we commonly understand as its agency.

There is no exact date for the beginning of this movement. Louis Leroy, an art critic, gave this period its name when he went to an independent exhibition and came across Claude Monet's Sunrise. He said it looked impressionistic, meaning not finished. Impressionists liked to be called Independents. During this time, being called an Impressionist was not a good thing. People wondered why the artists were not finishing their brush strokes and they did not like the colors being used. Characteristics of this movement include noticeable brush strokes that are not blended together, applying the paint in a thick, impasto style, and mixing the colors right on the canvas. Some Impressionists like to take an optical approach to painting and place the hues right next to each other on the canvas. This allows the eyes to do the mixing. Optical color mixing makes paintings look lighter than if the colors were mixed, and gives the paintings the effect of being in motion. Impressionists were interested in painting the everyday world around them.

Jacques Derrida’s Deconstructive Reading of Rousseau’s Essay on the Origin of Languages Gerasimos Kakoliris National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Jacques Derrida’s engagement with Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the second part of Of Grammatology constitutes the most systematic, extensive example of deconstructive reading. Nevertheless, the problem of whether Derrida reproduces Rousseau’s basic claims adequately has remained a peripheral concern. This has meant that this may constitute a misreading and the consequences that this would have for the deconstructive operation itself have not adequately examined. Hence, this enquiry into Derrida’s reading of Rousseau centers upon the extent to which Derrida distorts Rousseau’s text in order to be able to confirm deconstruction’s radical theoretical positions. Deconstructing the Essay: Rousseau and Language According to Jacques Derrida, the history of metaphysics has always repressed the written sign and conceived language according to the metaphors of self-presence and the voice (what he calls as “metaphysics of presence”). In order to reveal and contest this repression, Derrida dedicated himself, during the 1960’s, to a series of immanent readings of philosophers as Rousseau, Plato, Hegel, Husserl, Levi-Strauss, and others. These readings sought to show that every attempt to subordinate writing to the immediate expressiveness and full-presence of speech always presupposed a prior system of writing which was in conflict with that subordination.

Its multiple definitions cover one another in such a way as to generate what they seek to describe. My thesis tracks the ways in which noise can be understood historically and theoretically. I begin with the Skandalkonzert that took place in Vienna in 1913. I then extend this historical example into a theoretical reading of the noise of Derrida’s Of Grammatology, arguing that sound and noise are the unheard of his text, and that Derrida’s thought allows us to hear sound studies differently. Writing on sound must listen to the noise of the motion of différance, acknowledge the failings, fading, and flailings of sonic discourse, and so keep in play the aporias that constitute the field of sound itself.

Artists like van Gogh, Monet, Cézanne, Matisse, Degas, Modigliani and Chagall are considered the ‘blue-chip brigade’, which command the highest prices and biggest international interest. Equally, the blue chip brigade is owned, sold and bought by only a handful of the world’s wealthiest buyers and collectors that form an exclusive club of some 20 patrons worldwide.1 Melanie Clore is the [ Jewish, by co-incidence] Deputy Chairman of Sotheby’s Europe Division and the Chairman of the Impressionist and Modern art market worldwide and thus one of the most knowledge- able voices on the subject. Clore’s assessment of twenty Impressionist clients worldwide is most surprising when compared to the number of early Jewish patrons in Republican France and Imperial Germany. What is remarkable is that a small circle of Jewish patrons were vision- aries as far back as a century ago and that the Impressionists circle has not widened since its early patronage around 1900. Why did a ‘small exclusive club’—to use Clore’s terminology—of some twenty-two German Jews collect French avant-garde Art at a time when most European collectors shunned it? Why did a circle of German Jewish patrons “collect against the grain” at a time when the majority of German Jews wanted to assimilate and integrate into majority society? However, their enthusiasm for French Impression- ism resulted in the astonishing fact that of all French modernist art collectors in Wilhelmine Germany, 85% were Germans Jews.

    Derrida and Oralcy: Grammatology revisited Christopher Norris It’s still difficult to get used to the idea that Derrida’s no longer alive, no longer ‘there’ as a kind of tutelary (sometimes cautionary) presence. This is only the second time I’ve given a talk about him since he died. It’s difficult for all sorts of reasons, partly because he was so much a dominant influence on the intellectual scene, partly because he was so active, productive and intellectually creative right up until the last few months of his life. But also because he wrote so much over the years about questions of presence, the writer’s supposed presence in his or her work, and about questions of absence, including the kind of absence that overtakes a body of written work when the author dies and is no longer present to answer directly for his or her words. This raises the whole question of intentions, of authorial meaning (vouloir- dire), of how far we can or should respect those intentions, and so forth. And of course it also raises crucial issues about the scope and limits of interpretation, issues that we are very much concerned with here. In some of his earliest work, for instance in his 1971 essay on J.L. Austin and speech- act philosophy, Derrida was already saying that one of the peculiar traits of written language was the fact that in some sense it survives, it lives on, it continues to communicate or signify beyond the writer’s lifetime. In a sense this is obvious enough, yet Derrida thought of it as something really quite mysterious and hard to explain, this way that writing manages to convey at least the simulacrum of presence regardless of the author’s absence, whether through death or just not being there to respond to any queries.
