Cosplay: I chose to stay faithful to the original manga depiction, drawing references only from Hiromu Arakawa’s work, since she draws Alphonse more consistently than the anime adaptation. First, I modeled the armor in 3D using Cinema4D. I built it around my own body, so that I could exaggerate Al’s dimensions but still stay close to my own. Then i unwrapped it into patterns using Pepakura Designer. The helmet, which functions as Alphonse’s face. I constructed the eyes so that looking down makes the expression seem angry and when looking up it looks sad. The manga does this as well I made sure the eyes glow very faintly by using LEDs behind a few layers of painted transparency. The foot armor is articulated so it can follow the shoe inside. This is how medieval armors work, and it’s how the manga works too. The chestplate is one of the more complex pieces of this build. I made sure to make the collar double-thickness, and include the large and small indents. The three circles at the very front are tongue-and-groove joints, which in the manga allow the detach- able triangular chestpiece to align with the collar.

    OTHERNESS AND IDENTITY IN SHONEN MANGA ALEX JAMES LEWINGTON DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF YORK SOCIOLOGY AUGUST 2020 ABSTRACT This thesis explored how Otherness was identified and interpreted by adult readers within the United Kingdom, through their engagement with shonen manga. Using semi-structured interviews of 40 participants, 21 males and 19 females, this study investigated how UK manga readers contemplated Otherness, when the concept was broken down into overarching themes of exclusion, dehumanization and Othered identity. This study examined how questions of Otherness led readers to consider manga in relation to their identities. The findings indicate UK readers consider Otherness in relation to struggles of identity recognition and value. The Other is interpellated by UK manga readers as either a threat to power hierarchies between the Self and the Other, or a means for the Self to reinforce such hierarchies. The findings further suggest that UK manga readers commonly consider themselves to be the Other by way of social rejection, devaluation and systematic disregard; they often perceive themselves as underdogs; their identification of Otherness themes and their propensity to identify with Othered characters largely depends on their lived experiences of Otherness. Furthermore, UK manga readers widely report manga to be an inspirational medium, the reading of which is empowering, boosts self-esteem, encourages readers to embrace Otherness, to resist conformity to social norms, and inspires a never-give-up attitude in their pursuit of recognition. Lastly, their engagement with manga beyond the textual level provides UK manga readers with a sense of belonging within a community of other Others.

Sen on tarkoitus myös antaa ohjeita kirjastonhoitajille mangan valinnassa kirjastoihin. Opinnäytetyön toimeksiantajana toimii Oulun ammattikorkeakoulu. Opinnäytetyön pääasiallinen tehtävä on kertoa mangan pitkästä historiasta maailmalla ja Suo- messa, sekä ohjeistaa kirjastonhoitajia mangan valinnassa kirjastojen kokoelmiin. Tästä syystä opinnäytetyöhön on liitetty kirjastojen käytettäviksi mangasuositus-listat lapsille, nuorille ja nuorille aikuisille, sekä ohjeet mangan valintaan. Tämän lisäksi sen tarkoituksena on selvittää ihmisille, mitä manga tarkalleen ottaen on ja mitä syitä löytyy sen suosiolle ja ihmisten kiinostukselle siihen. Opinnäytetyön materiaalina toimivat aiemmin suoritetut tutkimukset, artikkelit ja videot. Lähteinä toimivat sekä kirjat, että Internet. Opinnäytetyö sisältää aiheestaan johtuen paljon vieraskielisiä sanoja ja termistöä, minkä vuoksi opinnäytetyöhön on liitetty
