1 /11 (2.13/3) 0.0 Chevy Colorado ZR2 pickup: Off-road animal A link has been posted to your Facebook feed.

Chevrolet on Tuesday introduced its Colorado ZR2, a scenery-eating, wall-climbing shot across the bow of the Toyota Tacoma. With its innovative, Multimatic shocks and class-exclusive, front-and-rear locking differentials, the ZR2 goes head on against the Tacoma TRD Pro, until now the undisputed champ of midsize truck terrors.

With the explosion of the midsize truck segment in recent years, the challenge was inevitable. Toyota had owned the midsize segment until the Colorado and GMC Canyon entered the market followed by the Ridgeline this year. While the GM twins and Honda emphasized their pickups’ comfort and drivability, Tacoma continued as king of the Outback.

But with the ZR2, Colorado wants to change that.

“We assembled a dream team of GM truck enthusiasts in order to bring more off-road technology than any other truck in the class,” said GM North America President Alan Batey in introducing the ZR2 before the Los Angeles Auto Show.”

The ZR2 comes from Chevy’s performance division. Like the ferocious, 650-horsepower Camaro ZL1, which is impressive both on and off the race track, the ZR2 aims to be both an off- road warrior and an on-road dancer.

Chevy claims the key to its dexterity to be its exclusive spool-valve dampers. Developed by supplier Multimatic for Formula One racing, the so-called DSSV shocks were first used on the Camaro Z28 track monster.

“Chevy came to us to bring the wide range of capability that spool-valve technology affords to a truck,” said Michael Guttilla, vice president of Multimatic Sales. “All the technology that made the Z28 a successful track car lends itself to going off-road.”

The shocks — combined with a 3 1/2-inch wider track, 2-inch higher ground clearance, and Tacoma-equivalent, 30-degree front approach angle — transform the Colorado into an off-road animal. At the Los Angeles unveil, journalists were taken over a closed course of moguls, hills and terrain. Most impressive was the ZR2’s locking differentials which enabled the ZR2 to climb a steep, unpredictable grade.

The truck segment has seen off-road performance trucks before in the Tacoma and Ford’s full- size F-150 Raptor. Unlike the Raptor, Chevy does not offer a unique, high-output engine with the ZR2 — but the standard V-6 and diesel option available in other Colorado trucks. Instead of raw power, the ZR2 appeals to extreme off-roaders who want more maneuverability than the big Raptor. The ZR2 was tested extensively through the narrow ridges of the Rubicon and GM’s off- road test facility in Yuma, Arizona.

“It’s amazing what a difference a foot of width makes off-road,” said Mark Dickens, boss of Chevy performance vehicles. “The smaller size of the Colorado is a huge enabler for taking the ZR2 more places, and getting it through tighter spots than you could access with a full-size truck.”

The ZR2 is distinguished by its robust front skid plate, robust, steel-tube rocker panels, black hood bulge and huge, 31-inch tires. It will tow up 5,000 pounds and carry 1,100 lbs. of payload. It was developed by GM after positive response to its ZR2 concept introduced her in LA in 2014.

With the ZR2, “you can go rock crawling on Saturday, desert running on Sunday, and comfortably drive to work on Monday,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president, Global Product Development in a statement. “This truck can do it all, and do it all well.”

2 /11 0.0 FOREX-Dollar slips off 11-month high; eyes on Trump, U. S. yields (0.01/3) By Shinichi Saoshiro and Masayuki Kitano TOKYO/SINGAPORE, Nov 16 (Reuters) - The dollar retreated from an 11-month high against a basket of currencies on Wednesday, taking a breather from a week-long rally driven by a rise in U. S. bond yields after Donald Trump won the presidential election. The dollar index slipped about 0.2 percent to 99.989, easing from Tuesday's high of 100.26, the strongest level since last December. A move above 100.51 would take the index to its highest since April 2003. With its rise on Tuesday, the dollar index had climbed 4.6 percent from a trough hit on Nov. 9, hoisted by a jump in Treasury yields as Trump's victory last week led the market to think that he and a Republican- controlled Congress would embark on fiscal spending to boost the economy. The market's focus remained squarely on the policies of President-elect Trump and U. S. bond yields. "The most important factor remains what kind of policies Trump enacts," said Shin Kadota, chief Japan FX strategist at Barclays in Tokyo. "The dollar is likely to be supported until the policies are revealed. What is key for the dollar is the overall balance of Trump's policies, as some may be viewed as negative for the economy," Kadota said. The greenback had gained a boost on Tuesday from stronger-than-expected U. S. October retail sales data, which reinforced the outlook for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike in December. Against the yen, the dollar eased 0.2 percent to 108.98 yen , after setting a five-month peak of 109.34 on Tuesday. The euro rose 0.2 percent to $1.0747, having edged up from an 11-month low of $1.0709 touched on Monday. "The dollar rally...is a function of U. S. yields and the rise in U. S. yields seems to be slowing down," said Sim Moh Siong, FX strategist for Bank of Singapore. That being said, it was still too early to tell whether the market has already seen a near-term top in U. S. bond yields, Sim added. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield stood at 2.224 percent on Wednesday, having backed off from a 10-month high of 2.302 percent set earlier in the week. Elsewhere, the pound stabilised after being hit on Tuesday as media reports refocused traders' attention on the political risks associated with Britain's departure from the European Union. Sterling edged up 0.1 percent to $1.2471 after losing 0.3 percent on Tuesday. The Australian dollar last traded at $0.7557, having pulled up from Tuesday's one-month low of $0.7511 on the back of a bounce in commodity prices. 3 /11 0.0 ‘Fullmetal Alchemist’ live-action adaptation in the works and fans may be in for a treat as another cult favorite is getting the live-action treatment. This time brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric will be making their way to the big screen in the live-action adaptation of Hiroum Arakawa’s “Fullmetal Alchemist.”

The film will star Ryosuke Yamada as , Tsubasa Honda as , and Dean Fujioka as . Edward’s little brother Al will be in full CG, reports Anime News Network.

Filming started in early June at the Italian town of Volterra and will end in the second half of August. The film is being directed by Fumihiko Sori and will debut in Japanese theaters around winter 2017.

“I want to create a style that follows the original manga as much as possible. The cast is entirely Japanese, but the cultural background is Europe. However, it’s a style that doesn’t represent a specific race or country. There will never be a scene in which a character says something that would identify him/her as Japanese,” says Sori on adapting the source material.

Despite the length of the source material, the story will be compressed into a single film for the adaptation. Ed will also be aged up to 20 years old as opposed to the original 15 years old to accommodate the pace. Sori also expressed to Oricon about his deep affection for the story that tells the “truth of living.”

“Fullmetal Alchemist” was originally released in manga form, which was published from 2001 to 2010 on ’s Monthly Shonen Gangan and later released by to the North American market. It has since then received two TV anime series adaptations, “Fullmetal Alchemist” in 2003 and “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” in 2009, as well as two feature lengths that debuted in 2005 and 2011, respectively. 6 /11 6 /11 0.0 Olympics-Cost for 2020 Games gymnastics venue more than double now Nov 16 (Reuters) - The cost to build a temporary gymnastics arena for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo has more than doubled with Shimzu Corp winning the $190 million (20.5 billion yen) contract, according to a report. The venue, which will accommodate 12,000 spectators, will be raised at Tokyo's Koto Ward with construction expected to be completed by October 2019, Kyodo news agency reported. The cost was initially slated to be $81.61 million (8.9 billion yen), as stated in the candidature file presented to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2013. The organisers cited reasons such as increase in construction prices and bolstering the earthquake- resistance system for the cost hike. The building will be used, after the Games, as an exhibition hall until 2030. They added the initial price reflected only the construction cost, while Shimzu's bid included design cost as well. The Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic organizing committee and the Tokyo metropolitan government will soon meet to talk about ratio of sharing expense. IOC President Thomas Bach met Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike in October and had proposed a committee to look into ways to cut cost after the overall estimates were found to be "very large". Venues for rowing/canoe sprint, swimming and volleyball have come under the scanner as part of cost- cutting measures. 7 /11 0.0 Benchmark JGB yield hits 8-month high, impact of poor 5-year sale lingers TOKYO, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Japanese government bond prices weakened across the board on Wednesday, with the benchmark yield hitting an eight-month high, as the market crumbled from the short-end on a lingering impact from a poor five-year auction the previous day. The short to mid-term maturities underperformed, as bearish sentiment from weak sales at Tuesday's five-year auction was amplified by lacklustre results from the Bank of Japan's regular bond-buying operation. The two-year yield and the five-year yield touched 9-1/2-month highs of minus 0.120 percent and minus 0.075 percent, respectively. "Gloom still lingers after yesterday's five-year sale. The auction did not draw strong demand amid receding expectations for further BOJ easing," said Soichi Takeyama, a rates strategist at SMBC Nikko Securities. "Foreign players also dominate the JGB midterm maturities, and Treasuries may have become more attractive from their view following the recent rise in their yields. " Treasury yields soared to 11-month peaks this week on speculation that U. S. President-elect Donald Trump would launch a massive fiscal package funded by debt. The benchmark 10-year JGB yield was up half a basis point at 0.005 percent after touching 0.015 percent, its highest since March. It has climbed from around minus 0.090 percent seen a week ago, pulled up by the surge in Treasury yields. Market focus was on how much further the 10- year JGB yield could rise before prompting action by the BOJ, which launched an yield curve control scheme in September in a bid to keep the benchmark yield around zero percent. Super long JGB yields fared a little better, their yields dipping on bargain hunting by investors who scooped up the bonds after their yields rose to their highest levels since September. The 30- year yield fell 1 basis point to 0.560 percent. Also putting further pressure on JGBs on Wednesday was a rise for Tokyo's Nikkei to its highest level since February, thanks to a weaker yen. 8 /11 0.0 Pampered Canadian pigs feed Japan's hunger for pricey pork By Rod Nickel and Yuka Obayashi WINNIPEG, Manitoba/TOKYO, Nov 16 (Reuters) - On select Canadian farms, thousands of pigs bound for Japan are getting five-star treatment. Japan's growing appetite for pricey pork cuts is driving Canadian and U. S. fresh pork exports to record levels, spurring producers to use every advantage to gain market share. While most of Canadian meatpacker Olymel L. P.'s pigs gobble pedestrian wheat and barley fare, others dine on rations spiced with mint and ginger on a Saskatchewan farm dedicated to fattening hogs bound for Japan, the world's second-biggest importer of the meat. Some Canadian hogs are indulged with 12 times more rest before slaughter than pigs destined for other markets, to ensure stress does not turn the meat dry. Meanwhile, another hog producer has opened an eatery in a trendy Tokyo district to show off its pork. "The Japanese consumer is probably the most powerful consumer of pork in the world, and they understand the difference in quality," said Claude Vielfaure, president of the hog-processing company HyLife. Rich premiums paid by Japanese consumers have fueled intense competition and led to cross- Pacific partnerships between North American hog producer Smithfield Foods and Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corp, as well as processor HyLife with trader Itochu Corp. Tyson Foods Inc and Maple Leaf Foods Inc also rank among North America's biggest pork suppliers, while processors NH Foods Ltd and Itoham Yonekyu Holdings , and meat wholesaler Starzen Co Ltd import large volumes of North American chilled pork. U. S. exporters shipped 147,000 tonnes of chilled pork to Japan from January through August, setting a record-brisk pace, according to the U. S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). Canada sold C$679 million ($507 million) worth of pork to Japan for the period, its fastest pace in 11 years as measured by value. The shipments show trade growth is possible based on consumer tastes and favorable prices, due partly to the yen's strength against the greenback and Canadian dollar, even as broad trade deals such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership suffer setbacks. Pork is the second-most consumed meat in Japan after fish, according to USMEF. PAYING UP Japanese buyers pay about C$1.20 per kilogram more than domestic buyers, factoring in the exporter's premium, freight and tariffs, said Ray Price, president of Alberta processor Sunterra Group. For a large high-quality loin, that works out to a bump of C$5.40 to the wholesale price. In September, Manitoba-based HyLife opened a restaurant in a Tokyo business district to enhance its reputation, serving back ribs and pulled pork salad. HyLife, which is 49 percent owned by Japan's Itochu, is spending up to C$125 million to expand processing and boost Asian sales. At Lucyporc's Quebec plant, pigs rest in a quiet barn for 16 to 24 hours before slaughter to reduce stress, compared with the industry standard of 2 to 5 hours. The result is juicier, better-tasting tenderloins, said general manager Denis Levasseur. Olymel, which gives its pigs the ginger- and mint- infused feed, acknowledges the spices do not change the taste of the meat. But it gives the company a marketing edge, said Richard Davies, senior vice-president of sales and marketing. In the United States, packers Rantoul Foods and Smithfield process hogs that are specially bred for Japan, distributed by Sumitomo and sold as Silky Pork brand. AGING FARMERS, HIGHER COST Japan produces just over half of the pork it consumes, limited by farmers' advancing age and the more than double production cost compared with North America, said Takashi Koiso, managing director of the Japan Pork Producers Association. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government aims to raise that to 58 percent to satisfy Japan's appetite for dishes such as fried or gingered pork. The United States and Canada, Japan's two largest offshore chilled pork suppliers, take advantage of shorter shipping times than European competitors, who sell mainly cheaper frozen pork, said Erin Borror, USMEF economist. Japanese trading house Itoham has doubled chilled pork imports from Canada during the past five years and plans a further boost of 20 percent this year over last year, said spokeswoman Aiko Komeda. To be sure, Japan is not within everyone's reach. J. H. Routh Packing Company, a family-owned Ohio processor, sticks to serving U. S. buyers, avoiding the high cost of Japan's specifications. "We found our niche," said sales manager Tony Stearns. "Trying to go and develop another market, (for which) we would have to buy equipment that costs millions - there's no real value in doing that. " While premiums can be lucrative, Japanese buyers often pay less than domestic buyers in spring, when prices rise, said Dave Bulgarelli, vice-president of sales at Rantoul. "You have to make what they want, not what you want to sell," he said. ($1 = 1.3389 Canadian dollars) (Editing by Matthew Lewis)

11 /11 0.0 Trump aims to ease Asian allies' qualms when he meets Japan's Abe Donald Trump is expected to use his first meeting with a foreign leader as U. S. president-elect this week to try to reassure Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and other Asian allies rattled by his campaign rhetoric, advisers to Trump said.

Abe, a political blue blood and veteran lawmaker, and Trump, a brash outsider with no diplomatic or government experience, have differences on policy issues such as free trade.

But the two may find they have more in common when they meet in New York on Thursday, including pledges to restore their countries' global stature and a desire to counter a rising China while improving relations with Russia.

"Prime Minister Abe and Mr. Trump will have good chemistry," said Takashi Kawakami, a professor at Tokyo's Takushoku University. "Both tend to decide and act based on intuition. And both are pragmatists who put their countries' interests first. "

An adviser to Trump said the president-elect would reaffirm his commitment to the U. S-Japan alliance and the region, despite campaign rhetoric that raised questions about the future of what has been the bedrock of Japanese defence since World War Two.

Abe wants to build a relationship of trust while taking the measure of the real-estate magnate, whom few in Japan thought would become president.

"The first and by far, top priority is to establish a personal relationship rather than debate specific policy areas," said a person familiar with Japan 's preparations for the meeting.

Trump's campaign comments on the possibility of Japan acquiring nuclear arms and demands allies pay more for the upkeep of U. S. forces on their soil have fanned worries.

His election has also dashed hopes for U. S. approval of a 12-nation trade pact, the Trans- Pacific Partnership (TPP) , a linchpin of Washington's "pivot" to Asia and a pillar of Abe's economic reforms.

A Trump adviser said he expected the meeting to "set the tone" for Trump's relations with Japan and the region. Some diplomats say, however, that until Trump makes key appointments, it will be hard to assess his policies on issues including China's maritime aggressiveness and North Korea's nuclear threat.

"I think the message ... is going to be extremely reassuring," the advisor said. "I expect he is going to reaffirm his commitments to the alliance and the American commitment to being in the Pacific long-term. "

The adviser, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Japan's financial support for U. S. troops in Japan might come up, but was unlikely to be a focus.

Japan agreed last December to boost spending for U. S. forces in Japan by 1.4 percent for the next five years, at an average of 189.3 billion yen ($1.74 billion) per year. Defence Minister Tomomi Inada has said Tokyo was paying enough.

Abe has boosted Japan's overall defense spending since taking office in 2012 while stretching the limits of its pacifist post-war constitution to allow the military to take a bigger global role.

Defense spending still stands at just over 1 percent of GDP against over 3 percent in the United States.

Some of Trump's rhetoric suggests an image of Japan forged in the 1980s, when Tokyo was seen by many in the United States as a threat to jobs and a free-rider on defense.

The Trump adviser stressed a more positive view.

"Frankly, the prime minister has been more assertive and forthright in trying to make those changes to Japan's global posture," he said. "I think he's going to get a very receptive audience there. "

Trump and Abe could also have a meeting of minds over Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Obama has had tense ties with Russia but Trump has praised Putin and stressed the possibility of better relations. Abe wants to resolve a row over islands seized by Moscow at the end of World War Two and will meet Putin for a summit in December.

On the economic front, Abe might also be able to offer Japanese technology and financing for U. S. infrastructure projects Trump has said he wants to promote.

That would fit with Abe's stress in his growth strategy on exports of technology such as high- speed trains.

Finessing differences on free trade will likely be tougher given Trump's opposition to the TPP.

"We have to continue waving the flag," the person familiar with Japan's preparations said. "If there is strong opposition from Trump, that's a disaster for our TPP efforts. We'll have to handle it with care. "
