They can be used to e r m C e e b m S structure conversations about prejudice, r b e e n intolerance, and develop skill sets to fight r i i c hatred and promote cohesion during tutor times n a g and are designed to run for 5-10 minutes. PREJUDICE 01 "LOCAL PROPAGANDA ON PUBLIC TV AND RADIO WAS WORKING NON-STOP TO ENSURE THE SERB POPULATION WOULD FEAR MUSLIMS... PRIJEDOR RADIO SAID ALL MUSLIMS HAD RECIEVED A LIST OF SERBS TO KILL. I JOKED THAT OUR LIST GOT LOST IN THE POST. DISCUSSION TOPICS -SAFET VUKALIC 1) What does prejudice mean? 2) Have you seen examples of prejudice recently either in media or in your daily life? 3) What rules are there in your school to tackle prejudice? 4) What ways can you do more as an individual to tackle prejudice? STEREOTYPES 02 IF YOU LOOK AT AND LISTEN TO ME, I DON’T LOOK OR SOUND LIKE A FOREIGNER, A REFUGEE, OR A MUSLIM. I DON’T INTRODUCE MYSELF TO PEOPLE AS AMRA, A BOSNIAN MUSLIM, EVEN THOUGH I DO CONSIDER MYSELF AS A BOSNIAN FIRST AND FOREMOST. WHEN I DO TELL THEM, ONCE THEY’VE GOT TO KNOW ME, THE EXPRESSIONS ON THEIR FACES ARE USUALLY PRICELESS. THAT’S REALLY IMPORTANT – TO MOVE BEYOND STEREOTYPES OF ‘REFUGEES’ OR ‘MUSLIMS’ OR EVEN ‘BOSNIANS’. -AMRA MUJKANOVIC DISCUSSION TOPICS 1) What are stereotypes? 2) How can we combat stereotypes that we hold ourselves? GENOCIDE 03 GENOCIDE IS THE DELIBERATE KILLING OF A LARGE GROUP OF PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF A PARTICULAR NATION OR ETHNIC GROUP. DISCUSSION TOPICS 1) Do you know the 10 Stages of Genocide? 2) Where do you think the process towards genocide begins? 3) Check the 10 Stages of Genocide. Were you correct? Are you surprised? HUMAN RIGHTS 04 HUMAN RIGHTS ARE THE RIGHTS TO WHICH EVERYONE SHOULD BE ENTITLED. THERE ARE 30 ARTICLES IN THE UN HUMAN RIGHTS ACT. DISCUSSION TOPICS 1) Can you name all 30 articles from the Human Rights Act? 2) Which ones did you get? Which ones did you not? https://www.un.org/en/universal-declaration-human-rights/ JUSTICE 05 THERE IS NO JUSTICE. THIS GRAVEYARD AND ALL OF THESE MURDERED PEOPLE HERE FELL FROM THE SKY? ... THAT’S NOT WHAT HAPPENED. IT’S WELL KNOWN WHO KILLED THE PEOPLE. I DIDN’T BELIEVE THAT IT COULD HAPPEN, BUT I MUST SPEAK OUT SO THAT WHAT HAPPENED TO US NEVER HAPPENS TO ANYONE EVER AGAIN. -FADILA EFENDIC Fadila's husband and son were killed during the genocide in Srebrenica in 1995, where muslim men and boys were executed by Bosnian Serb forces. What does 'justice' mean? How can justice be found after crimes like genocide? What kinds of sentences would you expect for the crime of genocide? REFUGEES 06 IT WAS ONLY WHEN I WENT TO SCHOOL THAT I REALISED THAT THE STORIES I HAD GROWN UP WITH WEREN’T EXACTLY NORMAL. THE FIRST TIME I CAN REMEMBER REALISING WHAT IT MEANT TO BE A BOSNIAN WAS IN YEAR 4 OF PRIMARY SCHOOL. WE WATCHED A FILM ABOUT THE WAR, AND I STARTED TO TALK ABOUT IT IN CLASS. I SAW THE SHOCK ON MY TEACHER’S FACE AS SHE REGISTERED WHAT I WAS SAYING... FOR US, THESE KINDS OF STORIES WERE NORMALITY. DISCUSSION TOPICS -AMRA MUJKANOVIC 1) What is a refugee? 2) Do you know anyone who is a refugee, or have you noticed any refugee communities in your area? 3) How can we make our community a better place for refugees? SYMBOLS 07 ON THE 30TH MAY 1992, WE WERE ORDERED, AS A SIGN OF LOYALTY TO THE NEW SERBIAN AUTHORITIES IN PRIJEDOR, TO HANG A WHITE SHEET FROM OUR HOUSES AND WHEN WE LEFT OUR HOMES, WE WERE REQUIRED TO WEAR WHITE ARMBANDS. - SUDBIN MUSIC DISCUSSION TOPICS 1) What symbols do people wear to identify themselves with a certain group? 2) What symbols do you use in your daily lives to show belonging to different groups? 3) Why is it a problem when symbols are imposed on other people? MOTHERHOOD 13 EVERY MOTHER IS A LIONESS FOR HER CHILD. WHEN YOU GIVE BIRTH, THEN YOU KNOW. WHEN YOUR CHILD GOES TO SLEEP AND GETS A FEVER, YOU’RE AFRAID SOMETHING’S GOING TO HAPPEN, THAT YOUR CHILD WILL DIE. WHAT CAN YOU SAY WHEN YOU SEE YOUR CHILD HAS GROWN UP, BUT SOMEONE TAKES HIM FROM YOU AND KILLS HIM. - FADILA EFENDIC DISCUSSION TOPICS 1) What does it mean to be a 'mother'? IDENTITY 14 MY CHILDHOOD WAS VERY HAPPY. WE DIDN’T DIFFERENTIATE WHEN IT CAME TO NATIONALITY: WHO WAS A SERB, WHO WAS A MUSLIM AND WHO WAS A CROAT. WE SOCIALIZED TOGETHER, I HAD FRIENDS – WE VISITED THEM WHEN THEY WERE CELEBRATING “SLAVAS”, THEY CAME TO OUR HOMES DURING BAJRAM. I HAD A FRIEND, MILADA, A SERB, AND I LOVED HER LIKE SHE WAS MY SISTER. WE WERE AT SCHOOL AND SPENT OUR SCHOOL DAYS TOGETHER. LATER, WE WORKED TOGETHER AT A SEWING COMPANY, WHERE WE WERE JUST BEFORE THE WAR. - KADEFA RISANOVIC What is identity? Can you think of five words about your personality, your culture or your background that you would use to describe yourself? NARRATIVES 15 DURING THE 1980S AND 1990S IN YUGOSLAVIA, THE SERBIAN LEADERS DISTRIBUTED PROPAGANDA THAT PORTRAYED MUSLIMS IN THE REGION AS 'ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISTS' AND 'TURKS' WHO HAD 'INVADED' WITH THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE. HISTORICAL EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THAT THE MUSLIM POPULATIONS OF YUGOSLAVIA WERE CONVERTS TO ISLAM AND HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE REGION. THIS 'NARRATIVE' BECAME A POPULAR MYTH AMONG RADICALISED SERBS IN THE REGION, WHO BELIEVED IT WITHOUT QUESTION. DISCUSSION TOPICS Social media can make it easier for people to push 'fake news' (propaganda). How can we make sure that the information we consume is accurate and not a 'narrative'? COMMEMORATION 16 GROWING UP IN THE UK, I WITNESSED FIRST-HAND HOW THE NATION REMEMBERED MANY GLOBAL ATROCITIES, YET THERE WAS NEVER ONE FOR US. IT FELT AS IF OUR SUFFERING WASN’T IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO BE REMEMBERED BY THE WORLD. AT A YOUNG AGE, I UNDERSTOOD THE IMPORTANCE OF THE NEXT BOSNIAN GENERATION REMEMBERING THE WAR AND THE KILLING THAT OCCURRED. - AMRA MUJKANOVIC This year, it is unlikely that large events will happen. What small memorials do you think you would be able to do at home? TRADITION 17 ALMASA SALIHOVIC IS A TEACHER IN BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA AND A SURVIVOR OF THE SREBRENICA GENOCIDE. IN THE AREA SHE LIVES IN, LOCAL CHILDREN ARE NOT ALLOWED TO STUDY THE BOSNIAN LANGUAGE, HISTORY OR CULTURE IN SCHOOL, AND INSTEAD LEARN A SERBIAN CURRICULUM. ALMASA TEACHES AT AN 'EDUCATION CENTRE' WHERE LOCAL BOSNIAN CHILDREN COME TO LEARN ABOUT THEIR HERITAGE AND TRADITIONS. DISCUSSION TOPICS 1) What traditions do you and your family have? 2) What traditions do you think we all share in the UK? 3) Why is it important that traditions from many different cultures are celebrated and shared? WAR 17 I FEEL LIKE I’M IN A PRISON CAMP. I FEEL CROSS WITH MYSELF FOR NOT “LEAVING” IN TIME, TO GERMANY OR WHEREVER ELSE, AS THIS IS NO LIFE. MY DEAR SISTER, ALL THE PRECIOUS TIME AND THE BEST TIMES OF MY LIFE ARE PASSING ME BY. -LEJLA HRELJA DISCUSSION TOPICS 1) What concerns does Lejla have about how the war is affectiong her life? 2) What things do you think that people take for granted in their modern lives? 19 YOU HAVE REMEMBERED HAVE YOU YOU HAVE LEARNED COMPLETED ALL THESE REFLECTIONS?
